Abstract

In this part, the implementation of the Cathodic Protection (CP) station in a new position is done due to the analytical study of the part (I) [1]. Also, a PV fed self-adjusted DC-DC converter is designed and implemented for this purpose, and Aluminum anodes designed and manufactured for the sake of approving the proposed CP station operation. A field test shows enhanced results due to the National Association of Corrosion Engineering NACE standard. An edit has been made on the main empirical formula that is previously intended for the design of the same CP system. The proposed CP station is very flexible, more accurate, of lower cost, and needs little maintenance as compared with the already existing CP station.

Abstract

The inverter topology is being used as an active filter to reduce the harmonics in the power system. The traditional voltage source or current source inverters are having the disadvantages of limited output voltage range hence it may not be able to supply enough compensating currents during heavy switching surges, Vulnerable to EMI noise and the devices gets damaged in either open or short circuit conditions and the main switching device of VSI and CSI are not interchangeable. The active filters are the type of DC-AC system with wide range of voltage regulation and integration of energy storages is often required. This cannot be achieved with conventional inverters and hence the impedance source inverters have been suggested. The T source inverters are basically impedance source inverters which can be used as an active filter in the power system. The MATLAB simulation is done and the results are discussed in this paper for both the types. The proposed dampening system is fully characterized by LCL based passive filters and T source inverter based shunt active filter. The disturbances in the supply voltage and load current due to the non linear loads are observed in the simulation. The same is studied after connecting the designed hybrid shunt active filter in the distribution system. The simulation results obtained from the proposed method proves that it gives comparatively better THD value.

Abstract

The broken rotor bar is an unexpected fault and a common cause of induction motor failures that threaten the structural integrity of electric machines. In this paper, a new approach to a broken rotor bar diagnosis, without slip estimation, based on the envelope of the stator instantaneous complex apparent power (SICAP) is proposed. The envelope is obtained from the SICAP modulation and then transferred to a computer for monitoring the characteristic frequency and its amplitude using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). For this purpose, the winding function approach (WFA) is used to simulate the broken rotor bar occurrence in a squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) fed on direct torque control (DTC). The obtained simulation results confirm the interest and efficiency of the proposed technique. Even when the induction motor is operating at the no-load level condition, the proposed method is also efficient to detect the broken rotor bar fault at low slip.

Abstract

Conventional speed controllers of DC motors suffer from being not adaptive, this is because of the nonlinearity in the motor model due to saturation. Structure of DC motor speed controller should vary according to its operating conditions, so that the transient performance is acceptable. In this paper an adaptive and optimal Neuro-Genetic controller is used to control a DC motor speed. GA will be used first to obtain the optimal controller parameter for each load torque and motor reference speed. The data obtained from GA is used to train a neural network; the inputs for the neural network are the load torque and the motor reference speed and the outputs are the controller parameters. This neural network is used on line to adapt the controller parameters according to operating conditions. This controller is tested with a sudden change in the operating conditions and could adapt itself for the conditions and gave an optimal transient performance.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i3.5750

Abstract

In order to achieve a good dynamical response of a full-bridge AC-DC voltage source converters (VSC). The bandwidth of PI controller must be relatively wide. This leads to the voltage ripple produced in the control signal, as known that its ripple frequency has twice of the line frequency and cause the 3rd harmonic of an input current. A Ripple Voltage Estimator (RVE) algorithm and Feed-Forward Compensation (FFC) algorithm are proposed and added to the conventional control. The RVE algorithm estimated the ripple signal to subtract it occurring in the voltage loop. As a result, the 3rd harmonic of the input current can be reduced, and hence the Total Harmonic Distortion of input current (THDi) are improved.  In addition, the FFC algorithm will offer a better dynamical response of output voltage. The performance evaluation was conducted through the simulation and experiment at 110Vrms/50Hz of the input voltage, with a 600 W load and 250 Vdc output voltage. The overall system performances are obtained as follows: the power factor at the full load is higher 0.98, the harmonic distortion at AC input power source of the converter is under control in IEC61000-3-2 class A limit, and the overall efficiency is greater than 85%.

Abstract

Wireless power transfer (WPT), through the transmission of contactless energy, is not only being used for charging batteries in smartphones, but it is also being increasingly used in the field of industrial applications. The capacitive based approach is utilized in this paper because of its ability to transmit power in a metal surrounding environment where the inductive-based approach failed to perform. This work focuses on the coupling study of a rotary CPT application where the power supply is stationary while the load rotates and therefore allows the load to rotate 360o free rotation. The Class E MOSFET power inverter is used here due to its ability to achieve high efficiency compared to other class of converters at high frequency. The prototype of the CPT for rotary application has also been successfully developed with disk plate thickness of 1mm-2mm. Overall, the developed CPT system for rotary application is able to deliver 5.5Watt with 83.33% efficiency. To enhance the power efficiency and ZVS conditions, a self-tuning circuit using phased-locked-loop has been proposed in this paper. The efficiency of the developed system with self-tuning circuit is increased to 97.%.

Abstract

Current source inverter (CSI) fed drives are employed in high power applications. The conventional CSI drives suffer from drawbacks such as harmonic resonance, unstable operation at low speed ranges, and torque pulsation. CSI fed drives with Direct Torque Control (DTC) has drawn the attention of the motor drives designers because its implementation requires no position sensor. Crucial to the success of this scheme is the estimation of electromagnetic torque and stator flux linkages using the measured stator voltages and currents. The estimation is dependent only on one machine parameter, stator resistance. The variation of the stator resistance, deteriorates the performance of the drive by introducing errors in the estimated flux linkage’s magnitude and its position and hence in the electromagnetic torque. Resistance change also skews the torque linearity thus making the motor drive a less than ideal torque amplifier. Parameter compensation using stator current phasor error has been proposed in literature. To obtain the stator current phasor error, the stator current reference is required which is not usually available in direct torque control schemes. An analytical derivation of the stator current phasor reference is derived systematically from the reference electromagnetic torque and flux linkages. The error between the stator current phasor reference and its measured value is a measure of the stator resistance variation from its set value. For the first time, it is demonstrated in this paper that DTC motor drive system can become unstable when the set value of the stator resistance in the controller is higher than the stator resistance in the machine. Abstract

The d-q model of Induction Motors (IMs) has been effectively used as an efficient method to analyze the performance of the induction machines. This study presents a step by step Matlab/Simulink implementation of a star-connected 3-phase IM under open-phase fault (faulty 3-phase IM) using d-q model. The presented technique in this paper can be simply implemented in one block and can be made available for control purposes. The simulated results provide to show the behavior of the star-connected 3-phase IM under open-phase fault condition.

Abstract

Multi-level converters are every day attracting research interest due to it tremendous positive contributions they are making in the power industries. The converter has put hope in the minds of power electronic engineers that a time will come when it will break a record by providing an efficient means of utilizing the abundant renewable energy resources. The paper presents a review of multilevel voltage source converters that are widely being used in engineering applications. It reports the technological advancements in converter topologies of Flying Capacitor (FC), Neutral Point (NPC) /Diode Clamped, and Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Recent customized/hybrid topologies of the three-phase multilevel inverter with reduced component count and switching combination are reported. The paper also reviewed different modulation techniques such as the multilevel converter carrier base PWM, Space Vector Modulation techniques (SVM), and Selective Harmonic Elimination method (SHE-PWM). Finally, various multilevel converters areas of application were highlighted. This review will expose the reader to the latest developments made in the multi-level topologies, modulation techniques, and applications.
