Abstract

The aim of this qualitative research is to compare the gender role representation in two English textbooks for twelfth grade senior high school students. The first textbook published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and second textbook published by Erlangga.  Content analysis was used as the research method of this study. Logsdon’s theory of gender representation was utilized to analyze the roles of gender representation in both textbooks. The results show that gender roles in both textbooks are dominated by male. It showed that male roles in both textbook tend to be professional occupation such as president, programmer, director, etc. in addition, female roles tend to  be social occupation such us secretary, teacher, housewife, etc. in conclusion, it was also found that gender stereotype was exist in male and female occupation in both textbooks. However, when both textbooks were compared, there is more gender equality of textbook published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture Bahasa Inggris than textbook published by Erlangga Pathway to English. It shows that the authors of Bahasa Inggris made an effort to promote gender equity.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the speaking ability of students of PGSD international class along with the type of speaking difficulty found by the students. The researcher chose year 2019 of PGSD international class as the sample consists of 20 students. A speaking test in the form of interview from UPT Bahasa Universitas Negeri Padang was used in collecting the data. As the result, the speaking ability of the students were 70% fair and 30% very poor. 14 out of 20 students were in fair and 6 out of 20 were in very poor. Then, comprehension is in 23,6% as the highest percentage of students’ kind of difficulty. It is suggested to the lecturers in international class of PGSD 2019 to provide the students some extra classes of English so that they can perform the better speaking ability during the use of English as the medium in the class.

Abstract

Education in Indonesia has included 21st-century learning. This is stated in the curriculum, especially the 2013 curriculum. The features of twenty-first-century learning must be recognized, and the learning models utilized in the learning process must lead to the needs of twenty-first-century learning. Collaborative learning is one of the 21st-century learning models. The use of the internet technology is one of the collaborative learning model's implementation tools. The purpose of this study is to learn about students' perceptions on internet-assisted collaborative learning in English class. This study was done with 39 students from SMAN 12 Padang's XII IPA 4 class. The researchers selected the sample for this study using total sampling. The data in this study was assessed using descriptive research using a quantitative method. The questionnaire was employed as the study's research instrument. According to the findings, students had a highly positive perception of the internet-assisted collaborative learning model. The average mean of the questionnaire represented it (3,31). According to the findings of this study, an internet-assisted collaborative learning model helps students establish positive interdependence, develop responsibility and teamwork, improve communication skills, and become more confident and critical in their English learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate English students' difficulties with parallel structure in the TOEFL test. Descriptive research with a quantitative approach is used in this study. The subject of this research was English education students at Universitas Negeri Padang in the 2019 academic year. To collect data, the researcher conducted a grammar test. In this study, the data were analyzed in several steps, including classifying student responses as correct or incorrect, calculating student test scores, calculating the percentage of difficulty in each skill, and determining the level of difficulty in each question. The test result shows that the students face difficulties in answering TOEFL questions related to parallel structure in the structure and written expression section. It can be seen in the average student test score, which is 56. Parallel structure with comparison is the most difficult skill with a percentage of 46.3%. On top of that, skills related to parallel structure with coordinate conjunctions get a percentage of student difficulty of 45.6%, while skills related to parallel structure with paired conjunctions get a percentage of student difficulty of 41%. Based on the results of calculating the difficulty level of the questions, there are 2 questions in the difficult category, 21 questions in the medium category, and 7 questions in the easy category.

Abstract

This research was correlational research with quantitative approach. The population of this research was 123 students of English Education UNP academic year 2020 from K1-K5. In choosing sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling technique to choose one class only. The researcher chose K2 consisted of 30 students as the sample of this research. The data of this research were obtained from two questionnaires to measure students’ reading motivation and enthusiasm and used test to measure students’ reading comprehension. Then, the data was analyzed with the help of SPSS program version 22. The result of this research showed that reading motivation partially had no correlation with reading comprehension (Sig. 0.637 > 0.05); enthusiasm partially had a correlation with reading comprehension (Sig. 0.019 > 0.05) with the negative correlation and moderate level based on the Pearson Correlation (-0.425); and reading motivation and enthusiasm simultaneously had no correlation with reading comprehension (Sig. 0.067 > 0.05). Properly, correlational research among three variables can be further developed.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second-year students’ perception while using Google Classroom in writing descriptive text. The descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second-year students at  English  Education Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The researcher used a simple random ampling technique to select the sample, and the number sample was 40 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was a questionnaire. The researcher used Microsoft excel 2016 to analyze the data. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that most second-year students' perception while using google classroom in writing descriptive text was had positive perception. The result in this study indicated that the second year students of English Education Department of universitas negeri padang especially in paragraph writing class had positive perceptions while using Google Classroom in learning about writing descriptive text. To conclude that the second year students at english education department of universitas negeri padang especially in paragraph writing class have positive perception while using google classroom in learning about writing descriptive text and also Google Classroom can be use for media of online learning in writing descriptive text

Abstract

The most common online gamification application in Basic Grammar Class at Universitas Negeri Padang are Quizizz, Wordwall, Kahoot!, iSpring, etc. there are challenges of using online gamification as a method of learning Basic Grammar and students faced many internal challenges along with external challenges. The purpose of this study is to know the internal and external challenges faced by English department students in using online gamification in Basic Grammar Class in Universitas Negeri Padang. The research instruments employed are interviews and questionnaire. 94 students enrolled in the basic grammar course responded to the questionnaire, while 9 of them responded to the individual interview session. Furthermore, this study attempts to provide insights into the barriers and challenges that can be considered when integrating the established gamification frameworks. it is possible to conclude that students experienced difficulties when using gamification concerning external and internal challenges. External Challenges are the weaknesses caused by the environment, like a competitive environment, a lack of an internet network, the lecturer assigning too many tasks and assignments, and a lack of time management. internal challenges are  Individual weaknesses such as knowledge and attitude. The internal challenges are as follows: a lack of content knowledge, a lack of student preparation, a lack of motivation, a lack of understanding, and a lack of vocabulary.

Abstract

Since Covid-19 outbreak, Indonesia government shifts the learning system from conventional into online learning to stop the spread of Covid-19. This situation causes new challenges for teacher in teaching and learning process, especially in classroom management. The aim of this study is to explore the challenges faced by teachers in the classroom during teaching and learning process. Qualitative descriptive method is used in this research. The samples of this study are English teachers at SMAN 13 Padang. The numbers of English teachers at SMAN 13 Padang are four. The data was collected through questionnaire (close question) and interview (open question). The result of this study revealed that there were some challenges in managing classroom during online learning. Students participation is the first challenge that teacher deal with. For example, students not listen to teacher explanation. The other challenge is students’ misbehavior which becomes significants problem must be addressed such as late and not stay in the room. During online learning process, students often did not pay attention with teacher in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify whether using role-play in teaching English effectively improves the students' English Speaking skills and to analyze the significant difference between the tenth-grade students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP who were taught by using the role-play method and those who were taught without using the role-play method. The researcher conducted the research with tenth-grade students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP in the academic year 2022/2023, using purposive sampling, X.E class, and X.D was the sample. Experimental research is used in this study by using a quantitative approach and the semi-scripted role-play method. The role-play method effectively improves the students’ English Speaking skills and there is a significant difference between the tenth-grade students improving speaking skills between those taught using the role-play method and those taught without using the role-play method in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. Teachers need to be able to select appropriate instructional strategies such as using the method of role-play so that students can express themselves and talk more freely without feeling fearful or lacking in self-confidence.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate proportion of omission and addition error and the sources of error made by students when arranging jumble words  at SMP N 7 Padang. The subject of this reserch was students of the eighth grade at SMP N 7 Padang. This research was conducted with quantitative methods and using test ang questionnaire as a tool of data collection. The results of this research show that students make more addition errors than omission errors. based on the research result, the percentage of omission error is 72,8% and addition error 27,2%. For the sources of error this researh focus on intralingual transfer and communication strategy, and the results of the questionnaire for intralingual transfer is 74,08% and communication strategy is 81,27% it means the most factor that makes students make errors in arranged jumble words test is intralingual transfer with percentage 74,08%The purpose of this research was to investigate proportion of omission and addition error and the sources of error made by students when arranging jumble words  at SMP N 7 Padang.
