Abstract

This study aim to figure out How is the Students' Perception on the Implementation of "English with Emma" YouTube Videos as a Vocabulary Building Strategy at SMKN 1 Padang. This research used a descriptive method. The participants in this study were 32 students of X1.1 class at SMKN 1 Padang who have watched "English with Emma" YouTube Videos. The data were collected using close-ended questionnaires. According to the findings, it can be concluded that the perception of most students on the implementation of English with Emma YouTube Videos as a Vocabulary Building Strategy is very positive. It means that Emma’s YouTube videos is very useful to reinforce vocabulary enrichment for most of the students.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the abilities of the first-year and the third-year students of English Education Program of Universitas Negeri Padang in using Context Clues and to know the difficulties faced by the students in using Context Clues. This research was a descriptive research. The population of this research were the first-year and third-year students of English Education Program UNP. The total sample of this research was 80 students consisting of 45 first-year students and 35 third-year students. The instrumentations of this research were Context Clues test consisting of 30 questions and an interview. The test result showed that the average score of first-year students was 51.3 and the third-year students was 54.7. The average score indicated that the students’ ability in using Context Clues was in Moderate level. Furthermore, the interview result showed that there were three difficulties faced by the students in using Context Clues: not understanding the context of the sentence, lacking vocabulary mastery, and having difficulty in finding the meaning of unfamiliar words by using Example and Antonym clues.

Abstract

The teaching and learning process is closely related to the use of gemification. Many English teachers use gemification as a medium to help them in teaching. For teachers, the use of gemification in the teaching and learning process can make students have fun and interesting learning. For some students, gamification may be beneficial for them in learning English. Therefore, researchers want to know students' perceptions of using the Duolingo application as a speaking learning medium. This study was a Classroom Action Research. A classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted at Aisyiyah Tourism Vocational School, West Sumatra. Participants, 20 students from second grade, gave positive perceptions about the Duolingo application. This research shows that most students prefer to learn to speak English using the Duolingo application as a medium. There are several advantages that can be taken from using the Duolingo application as a medium for learning to speak English, such as it is easy for them to understand the material, they are more enthusiastic and motivated in learning to speak English, Duolingo can eliminate boredom in learning and also encourage them from new ideas in learning.

Abstract

This research aims to review and explore students’ perceptions of the use of computer-based test (CBT) in the final examination of Mata Kuliah Umum (MKU) Bahasa Inggris at Universitas Negeri Padang. For this research, an online questionnaire comprising 15 statements which adapted from Sauti (2020) were utilized. Also, an interview with consisting of 5 questions were constructed by the researcher. The participants were 97 students from the different study programs and faculties at UNP. The findings from the data analysis show that most students positively perceive the use of CBT in their final exams. The positive was revealed by indicating its perceived usefulness, academic benefits, pleasantness, and efficiency compared to PBT methods. On the other side, there were some obstacles that students faced when using CBT that revealed by indicating the need for extra time of familiarity with operating devices, the internet connection, technical issues, potential health concerns, and the test schedules. Abstract

The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using the Hello English application as an autonomous learning activity to increase vocabulary EFL College students. The study’s importance is predicted to have both academic and practical implications. The research design was descriptive quantitative. The instrumentation of this research were questionnaire and interview. The technique of data collection was that the students were given questionnaires to find out about the effectiveness of using those applications as autonomous learning. The respondents will be able to give responses to each statement by clicking one of the responses (Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree) given. The data results on students’ perceptions, specifically concerning the physical aspect and psychological aspect of using the Hello English program are presented in the table.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the translation quality produced by students using printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools. Participants in this research were students from K7-22 class who have taken Introduction to Translation Class from English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang, totaling 27 students. This research was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research and using translation test as the instrument. Researcher gave two different texts with the same level. When using a printed dictionary, students showed good level of translation quality, with a score of 2.20. Also, when using post-editing on machine translation tools it produces a higher score of 2.65, which shows that the level of translation quality is very good. It can be concluded that comparing the quality of student translations from the two versions that post-editing on machine translation tools provides better translation quality than printed dictionary. However, in each element, printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools show that the accuracy is same. These two translation versions only help students in terms of acceptability and readability. For accuracy, students need to be improved a lot when translating text because there are still shortcomings when using printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal EFL students’ perception regarding the efficacy of LearningEnglish Kids as a tool for autonomous learning aimed at increasing vocabulary. The perception can be negative or positive based on the experience of each student. This research uses descriptive research with a quantitative approach. This research was conducted from the researcher’s observation during teaching practice at SMP 15 Padang where certain issues were identified. Utilizing random sampling, 65 students from six classes were selected as samples. Data collection involved distributing a questionnaire comprising 40 items and conducting interviews via online, focusing on 9 questions. The analysis indicates that both songs and poems from LearnEnglish Kids serve as effective autonomous learning tools, fostering positive perception on students’ vocabulary development across reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. Specifically, students reported improvements in their reading comprehension and fluency, as well as enhanced speaking, writing, and listening abilities, underscoring the comprehensive advantages of integrating these resources into language education.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the teachers’perception in using electronic student worksheets Liveworksheets.comas English teaching material at SMAN 7 Padang.The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. A total of 3 English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang were chosen as the participants. The purposive sampling was used to determine the participants. The data was collected through an interview. The interview guideline consisted of 13 questions about teachers’perception in using electronic student worksheets Liveworksheets.comas English teaching material. The questions were based on the four aspects of perception by Horton; attractiveness, perceived of effectiveness, relevance, and perceived motivation. The result of the data analysis showed that the teachers have a good perception in using electronic student worksheets Liveworksheets.comas English teaching material at SMAN 7 Padang even though teachers encounter multiple issues while working with electronic student worksheets Liveworksheets.com as teaching material, such as conversations about unsuitable topics, inability to download materials, and all guidelines are in English. Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the abilities and the difficulties faced by English teachers in designing Modul Ajar in the Merdeka curriculum at SMAN 2 Batang Anai. This research used qualitative research using the case study method with documentation and in-depth interview instruments employed in this study. The participants involved were two English teachers who teaching at the 10th and 11th grade. The result showed that the abilities of English teachers were in sufficient category and poor category with scores of 70 and 60 respectively. Meanwhile, the difficulties faced by English teachers include: a) difficulty in determining an effective learning approach; b) difficulty choosing the right learning method; c) difficulty in creating learning materials that are interesting for all students and appropriate to learning methods; d) difficulty in designing learning steps to fit the available time allocation; e) difficulty in choosing the right learning strategy to suit the learning steps and time allocation; f) difficulty in relating the material to everyday life or real-life contexts in trigger questions; g) difficulty adjusting learning activities to the time in class; h) difficulty in facilitating or providing material that meets all students' needs; i) difficulty in creating student worksheets and assessment instruments due to limited time. Through this research, it is hoped that the findings can help English teachers find out their abilities and difficulties they face.

Abstract

This article explores generation global application to students speaking skills in English club. The purpose of this research was to know students perception about English skills that construct on GGA and the features of GGA that used in English club activities. This research employed descriptive and quantitative methods. The researcher used a questionnaire to collect data. The participants were 30 students who joined the English club. According to research findings, the students’ perceptions of using GGA for speaking skill in English club is positive considering speaking components in GGA skill and features. GGA skills components include active speaking, active listening, and critical thinking had postive perception by the students in English club. Either, GGA features include teaching resources, video conference, ultimate dialogue adventure and special project had positive perception by the students
