Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Many students got low score in Semantic and Pragmatic course. They complained that the textbook used in the course is difficult to understand. It is possible to consider that there is a correlation between the students’ bad scores and the readability of the textbook. In previous research, it was found that suitable level of readability and reading skills are important consideration to reach maximum learning gain. Because of that, it becomes important to measure readability level, the factors which influencing readability level and the best way to use the textbook. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research was 3 pages from 3 chapters of the textbook, chapter 9, 10, and 11 chosen randomly from each chapter. The instruments were a written questionnaire, an online readability measurement website, and notes during interview. The findings show that the readability level measured by students and readability formula was difficult. The most influencing factors in determining readability level were interest and vocabulary difficulty. The best way to use the textbook was using one single textbook, editting by put some notes on the page, then presenting it in a lecture form by the lecturer.

Grammar is an essential language component that should be concerned to create a good writing, no exception to the use of adjective clause. However, there are still some problems identified in the adjective clause construction. The purpose of the research is to figure out students’ ability in constructing adjective clause. The design used in this research is descriptive research with second year students of English Language Education Program of UNP as the research population. There were 31 students taken as the research sample selected by using stratified sampling technique out of 162 students. The data were collected through document analysis and Hortatory Exposition essays were chosen as the source of the data. The essays were analyzed by two raters and the score was classified based on score classification. Then, the problems were identified from the students’ adjective clause construction in the essays. The result of the study showed that the students’ ability in constructing adjective clause is categorized into excellent with the average percentage 87. 94%. The common problem found in the students’ adjective clause construction is in sentence element which has total 37.04% problems identified. Students tend to disregard the element of the sentence, such as subject and verb.

This research was a descriptive qualitative research that aimed to analyze students’ reading motivation level and students’ types of motivation in English subject at junior high school. The population of this research were 8th grade students of SMP N 11 and SMP N 46 Sijunjung. The sample of this research were 78 students that was selected by using purposive sample. The instruments of study were Motivation for Reading in English Questionnaire (MREQ) by Komiyama (2013) and open-ended interview. The items were scored based on the students’ response to the questionnaire.The total score items became the result of students’ reading motivation (level).The type of students’ reading motivation was came from the score total from items 1 to 16 (intrinsic) and 17-46 (extrinsic).The researcher defined the students’ type of motivation by summing up the score of each type of motivation. The result of this research showed that (1) Students’ reading motivation level in reading English subject of SMP N 11 Sijunjung and SMP N 46 Sijunjung were dominated by the average level of motivation. (2) Students’ types of reading motivation in English subject of SMP N 11 Sijunjung and SMP N 46 Sijunjung was extrinsic motivation.

This study aimed to analyse common themes found in the English poems taught to senior high school students. Theme is unstated main idea of a literary work The object of this study was the poems in English taken from textbooks. This is a content analysis research used in analyzing the poems taken from textbooks. The instrumentations of this research was the researcher myself.The findings of the research showed that not all the poems’ theme are related to the teenage life as what Curriculum 2013 required. There were three poems which related to teenage life and fullfil the demand of Curriculum 2013.

This research was a descriptive research that aimed to identify the vowels that mostly mispronounced and the ability of third year English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This study also aimed to find out the factors leading to the students’ difficulties to pronounce English vowels. The sample in this study was K1 2017 class which consisted of 29 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The technique of data collection was pronunciation test that consists of 60 words and questionnaire that consists of 7 question. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Cambridge Advanced Learner Dictionary. From the result of the test, the researcher found that the common type of stress error that made by the students was vowel /æ/ (66.2%) from all the errors occurred. The mean of students’ level of error in English vowel was 66,1%.

Dangling modifiers is a problem in sentence structure where there is a mismatch between what the writer or speaker means and what the reader or listener means. This problem will certainly cause a misunderstanding. This study aimed to determine the ability of students to understand dangling modifiers and find out the types of dangling modifiers that were most frequently answered incorrectly by students. This research is a descriptive quantitative study. The population of this study was 35 students from K-2017 English Language Education. Samples were taken using the stratified cluster sampling method. Data were collected through grammar test. The data were given a general score and each part of the test is designed to determine students' ability in understanding dangling modifiers. It was found that the ability of third-year students to understand dangling modifiers was poor because the average score was 49. To find out the type of dangling modifiers that were most answered incorrectly, each answer error in each type of dangling modifiers would be added so that found 55% errors in dangling elliptical clause type. It can be concluded that students need to be aware of logic and illogical sentences (dangling modifiers).

This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability at grade 8 of SMP Negeri 26 Padang. This research was quantitative research which used correlational technique design. The sample of the research was 30 students of grade eight selected by clustering sampling. The instruments used in the research were vocabulary test and speaking test. Vocabulary test consisted of 50 questions of multiple choices, and speaking test in the form of role play. The research data were in the form of interpretation of students’ vocabulary and speaking test results, and their correlation. Based on data analysis, it was found that students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability were fair. They were proved by the mean score 65 for vocabulary mastery and 68 for speaking ability. Moreover, there was strong correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. It was shown by the rvalue = 0,703.

This research aimed to find out the types of error and causes of error on using gerund among the second year students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is desciptive qualitative research. The sample of this research is 39 students selected using simple random sampling. The instrument used in this research was test. The test was divided into two part; completion test and translation test. The students were given 15 questions for completion test and 20 questions for translation test. The research data were students’ answer sheet. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the total error is 291 errors. Most errors were misformation with the total number (125 errors/ 43%), second place was omission error (110 errors/ 38%) and the last was addition error (56 errors/ 19%). Meanwhile, misordering error was not found in this study. Then, it was also found the causes of error. The most causes of error was ignorance of rules restriction with the total number 125. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the students still experience great difficulties in using gerund.

This research aimed to find out the ability of English Department 2017 academic year in summarizing a reading passage in Critical Reading class. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is 27 students selected using cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this research were summary writing test. Students were given a reading passage, entitled "Euthanasia" consisting of 5 paragraphs with 671 words. Students were asked to read the text, and then write a summary. Based on data analysis, it was found that the students' ability in summarizing a reading passage was average. It is proved by all students only able to get scores between 55-79%. This is because as many as 24 (89% of 27 students) students had difficulty in the vocabulary and paraphrasing. They have limited vocabularies. Then, as many as 17 (60% of 27 students) students had difficulty with grammar. It is because they tend to write sentences in incorrect structure. Last, as many as 15 (55% of 27 students) had difficulty to determine the main idea.

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ attitude towards advantages of learning literature in English. The participants of this research were 22 eleventh grade students in SMAN 2 Padang who took English as Specialization class. This study was descriptive qualitative research used in investigating senior high school students’ attitude towards literature in English. The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire and interview. The following are advantages of learning literature in English, encouraging language sources, improving language skill, expanding students’ awareness through environment and willingness to learn English language. The findings of the research showed that students’ attitude towards advantages of learning literature in English is positive.
