Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the media used in ELT textbook for beginners based on local characteristics of students by showing the data from analysed textbook, which is inappropriate for the the young learners in Indonesia, and this media made the teaching learning process ineffective and inefficient. Descriptive research design was applied in this study. The technique for collecting the data was quantitative approach. There were three (3) textbooks commonly used in primary level grade 4 in Indonesia. Those three were analyzed based on the local characteristics of students using demographic analysis. The result shows that only 5.6% of the media was related to local characteristics of students since the rest were to related general and foreign characteristic which reached 49% and 45.4% respectively. Therefore, the reason why the Englishlearners in Indonesia particularly on primary level grade 4 could not reach the standard of English Learning was because the media was 94.4% not related to the local characteristics of students.

Abstract

The objectives of this study is to find student’s voices on teachers’ written feedback. The qualitative study investigates the student’s voices on teachers’ written feedback of their essays and comments that benefit students’ future improvement as writers. It explores sixty-one English Department students’ opinions on the written feedback of their writing teachers at Ar-Raniry State University of Islamic Studies, Banda Aceh, Indonesia.  The findings indicate that writing teachers provide various kinds of feedback on students’ essays and they valued positive teachers’ feedback on all aspects of writing such as grammar, mechanics, content and organisation. Teachers’ negative comments were also considered useful for students’ learning because they can help students to improve their critical thinking and writing skills. In addition, for student future improvement, teachers’ feedbacks do contribute to learning and that teachers’ feedback on grammar and organisation are more preferable than those on content and mechanics. It is suggested that feedback which highlights strengths and weaknesses of students’ work can facilitate students to learn and make better future learning.

Abstract

This research was intended to investigate the types, the factors, and the reasons of language maintenance. Research design in this study was in case study approach by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were the intensity of using utterances of Javanese language in transcript of the interview to the Javanese early family in language maintenance. The data source of this research was intermarriage Javanese family. Techniques of collecting the data in this research were observation, interview and documentation. Data were analysed by using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s theory with the processes of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Result of the research showed that the language maintenance was based on active language maintenance type.  Factor of language maintenance was the loyalty to maintain its language although it face. The reason of language maintenance was to keep ethnic identity. Meanwhile, it did not happen to their fourth child, the child could not maintain Javanese language, he just know that Javanese language as their language should be known as the history.

Abstract

The purpose of tis study was to investigate English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ achievement in writing skill (descriptive text) through Think Pair Share method. Therefore, the action research design was implemented to match with the purpose of the study. The techniques of collecting the data were writing test, observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study shows that the students’ achievement sustainably improved from the first evaluation, which was 65,50 to second evaluation, which was 75,09 and to the third evaluation, which was 85,50. The score continuously improved from the first evaluation to the third evaluation. Observation result shows that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method. Questionnaire and interview report shows that students agreed that the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method had helped them in writing descriptive text. In conclusion, the application of TPS method significantly improved students’ achievement in writing descriptive text

Abstract

This study entails the translation of scientific terms from English into Indonesian. The objectives of this study are to investigate the problem of non-equivalence at word level found in mathematics bilingual textbook and to investigate the translation strategies used. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were 89 words and phrases containing scientific terms. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The finding of this study revealed that there were five problems of non-equivalence at scientific terms found in mathematics bilingual textbook. They were the source language concept is not lexicalized in the target language, the source language word is semantically complex, the source and target language make distinction in meaning, the target language lacks hyponym,  and difference in form. To solve the problems of non equivalence, it was found that four translation strategies proposed by Baker were applicable.

Abstract

Translation-mediated events get circulated globally through the media. This paper focuses on studying how events in, about, and pertaining Indonesia in general are presented to the foreign audience through translation. To that end, this paper employs descriptive product-oriented approach and translation transformation strategies adapted from those proposed by translation scholars. The data were collected from an online media, VICE Indonesia, and were limited to Indonesian source texts and their English target texts published in November 2018. Following initial data collection, 10 pairs of target and source texts were compiled for comparative analysis. Data analysis revealed that adaptation and re-contextualization of target texts occurred. They are found most prominently in the title and lead sections, although an analysis on the articles’ content also show that the target texts’ contents also experience similar changes. Among these changes, the most noticeable are recomposition of paragraphs, omission and substitution or paragraphs, and different choice of source of quote. Ultimately, although the target texts maintain to some degree of semblance to the source texts, new realities and perspectives emerge as the result of these translation strategies.

Abstract

Selecting suitable reading materials are taxing and challenging for many English instructors. Text readability analysis can be used to automate the process of reading material selection and also the assessment of reading ability for language learners. Readability formulas have been broadly used in determining text difficulty based on learners’ grade level. Based on mathematical calculations, a readability formula examines certain features of a text in order to provide best rough approximations as an indication of difficulty. This paper reflects some aspects and issues of readability analysis.

Abstract

This research was Classroom Action Research, aimed to improve the students’ ability in speaking by using everyone is a teacher here strategy. The sample of this study was XI-IPA, which consisted of 14 students of SMA Free Methodist Medan. This research was done in two cycles. Each cycle was consisted of four steps, namely, planning, action, observing, and reflecting. The data of this study were obtained by using a test, interview sheet and observation sheet. Based on the analysis, it was found that there was an improvement on the students’ ability in speaking from each cycle. It was showed from the mean of pre-test, which was 57,5. In the first cycle, there was an improvement of the result of the students’ mean, which was 68,4 and for the second cycle there was an increasing of the students’ mean which was 79,1.  Moreover, in pre-test session there was 21% (3 students) who got point of ≥ 70. In post-test for cycle I, there was 50% (7 students) who got point of ≥ 70. In post-test for cycle II, there was 78% (11 students) who got point of ≥ 70. So, the total percentage of the students’ increasing from the pre-test to the post-test cycle II was 49%. And it indicates that the using everyone is a teacher here strategy can improve the students’ ability in speaking.

Abstract

The most important duty of a translator and an interpreter is to deliver the message from the SL to TL. Differs from a translator, an interpreter works in a limited time span and will rely on the knowledge and vocabulary he/she knows beforehand in order to deliver the meaning of the speech. Therefore, an interpreter should implement various forms of interpreting techniques, as stated by Li (2015) that strategies are tools for interpreters to overcome challenges in interpreting. The research material of this paper is the President of Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo and Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Malcolm Turnbull Press Conference on February 2017. The press conference was done by consecutive interpreting. This study is conducted in qualitative approach by Hale and Napier (2013) to show the concept and characteristic of the strategies used in the interpretation and to analyze process and product of interpreting. As result it is found that both of interpreters applied strategy to enhance their understanding of the message and to overcome of the difficulty of the speech and the short time span. The most frequent strategies applied by both of interpreters are transcoding, omission and addition.

Abstract

This research was conducted to identify the function of euphemism used in Karonese Laguage Langkat. This research applied qualitative descriptive approach. The qualitative data were taken from interview in karonese people at villange bahorok, langkat. The instrument for collecting the data through interview. The result of the analysis from interview the data taken from the respondents show that euphemism used in Karonese language divided in some categories such pronoun, adjective, verb, and noun. The use of Euphemism in Karonese language is not only for the words, but also in some phrases. In express the euphemism, karonese culture used Euphemism to communication.  And the last one is karonese people usually use Euphemism to express the euphemism in situation or condition. The content of social values in the mourning tradition of karonese’s culture has function to motivate, advice, amuse, and strengthen the condolences family. And in educational function that can be as the reflection for the people about the importance of this tradition for readers especially young generation.
