Abstract

The fashion industry has experienced rapid growth along with the emergence of fast fashion. Fast fashion is a clothing business model that emphasizes rapid, large-scale production at affordable prices to meet trending needs. However, the emergence of fast fashion has caused a global environmental crisis worldwide, especially Africa being the most affected country. One of the ecological impacts of fast fashion is the increase in clothing waste. The increase in clothing waste has led Global North countries to systematically dispose of their used clothing in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania. This study aims to analyze the role of Greenpeace, an environmental NGO, in addressing the fast fashion waste crisis using the concept of Global Environmental Governance (GEG). The research method used is qualitative research with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include documentation studies from books, scientific journals, Greenpeace reports, online media, and others as data sources. The data obtained are then analyzed to draw research conclusions. The findings indicate that Greenpeace plays a significant role in global environmental governance. In the context of this research, Greenpeace has successfully raised the issue of fast fashion waste as part of the global political discourse. Greenpeace plays a role in (1) information provider, (2) input on agenda and policy developer, (3) environmental advocate, and (4) operational function implementer in the case of fast fashion waste in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Abstract

Indonesia’s palm oil industry, a cornerstone of national economic growth and rural livelihoods, faced escalating trade barriers and sustainability demands, particularly from the European Union, from 2005 to 2015. This study investigates Driving factors behind Indonesia’s 2015 decision to cooperate with Malaysia in CPOPC: Economic, political, and environmental considerations, using employing Richard C. Snyder’s foreign policy decision-making framework to systematically analyze the interplay of internal and external factors. The research adopts a qualitative explanatory literature review, synthesizing data from peer-reviewed journals, policy documents, and credible news sources published from 2005 to 2015. The analysis reveals that Indonesia’s policy shift was driven by the convergence of domestic economic imperatives such as maintaining export revenues, supporting smallholders, and responding to industry lobbying, and mounting external pressures including discriminatory European Union regulations, NGO campaigns, and global market competition. The formation of CPOPC is shown to be a pragmatic diplomatic response, enhancing Indonesia’s bargaining power, promoting sustainable palm oil standards, and fostering collective action with Malaysia to counter external challenges. This research fills a gap in the literature by demonstrating how multi-level decision-making processes and transnational alliances can be mobilized to safeguard national interests in contested global commodity markets. The findings offer practical insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders on the importance of strategic cooperation and adaptive diplomacy in the face of evolving international trade and sustainability regimes.

Abstract

The transformation of a village into a tourist village is a complex and multidimensional process that requires effective leadership, community empowerment, and synergy among local stakeholders. This study aims to analyze the role of the village head in directing policies, managing community participation, and optimizing local resources in the transformation of Lerep Village, Semarang Regency, into a community-based tourism destination. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the village head, community leaders, and tourism practitioners; participatory observations of village activities; and analysis of policy documents and empowerment programs. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman (1984) model, involving data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing with source, technique, and time triangulation to enhance the validity of the findings. The results of the study show that the leadership of the village head is both participatory and transformational. Participatory leadership is reflected in village deliberation forums and inclusive decision-making mechanisms, while transformational leadership is seen in the development of unique tourism products, community-based training, and cross-sector collaborations that strengthen community independence. The combination of these two leadership styles increases citizen participation, strengthens local institutions, encourages innovation, and produces positive socio-economic impacts, such as increased income for micro-enterprises and strengthened social cohesion. In conclusion, the role of the village head is not only as an administrative figure but also as a catalyst for change capable of integrating the values of mutual cooperation with modern leadership strategies. This study contributes to the development of a tourism village leadership model that can be applied in various other contexts to promote inclusive, participatory, and sustainable village development.

Abstract

As the only developed tourism village in Papua, Yoboi Village exemplifies successful tourism village management. Given its outstanding performance, this study aims to examine the role of change agents and the contribution of public sector entrepreneurship towards the management of village tourism. Researchers used Caldwell’s framework to identify change agents roles consisting of champions, adapters, consultants, and synergists, meanwhile the PSE concepts asserting the public officials roles to produce public value. Using a qualitative approach through case study method, researchers collect data through interviews, focus group discussion, observations, and documentation. The research’s findings describe the active engagement of the village’s youth reflects the concept of change agents aligns with the role as champion. Additionally, the active participation of a key local figure also serving as a public official in Jayapura regency illustrates the public actor participation which also fit with the public sector entrepreneurship principle. This study emphasizes the dynamic role of a key actor, whose leadership emerged not solely from individual competencies but was also significantly influenced by contextual and environmental factors. The combination of attributes from both the change agent and public sector entrepreneurship paradigms have contributed to Yoboi village tourism success.
