Journal of English Teaching (JET) is a professional, double blind peer-reviewed international journal devoted to promoting dissemination of scholarly knowledge and exchange of academic research and professional findings on all aspects of second or foreign language (L2) learning and teaching. Due attention is paid to the teaching and learning of all languages as a second/foreign language. Abstract

AbstractThis study merely aims to investigate Senior High School Students’ language anxiety and also to find out what class obtains the most dominant language anxiety. The respondents were administered a set of questionnaire and interview which was adapted from Muhaisen and Al-Haq (2012) The result of data analysis showed that the most dominant of the students’ anxiety were found in speaking followed by reading, writing and listening in their language learning process. It is highly recommended that the teachers be more creative in making the class atmosphere to be more fun and relaxing in teaching the language skills so that the students are more encouraged to learn the language.Keywords: language anxiety, senior high school students, language learning process

Abstract

AbstractThere is no single magical formula for motivating students. Many factors affect a given student'smotivation to work and to learn. This study focused on the correlation between self assessmentand motivation in learning English of the Second Grade students of SMPN 6 Palembang. Thereare four objectives in this study:1) to find out how the second grade students of SMP N6Palembang motivation in learning English is; 2) to find out how the second grade students ofSMPN 6 Palembang self assessment is; 3) to find out whether or not there is any significantcorrelation between self assesment and motivation in learning English of The Second GradeStudents of SMPN6 Palembang; and 4) How much self assesment contribute to Students’motivation in learning English of The Second Grade Students of SMPN 6 Palembang. The datawere collected by using questionnaire of 70 students that were taken as the samples by usingrandom sampling. Then, it was analyzed by using Person’s Product Moment CorrelationCoefficient and the calculation was done by using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science).The result of the study showed that 72.9% of the second grade students of SMP N6 Palembanghad good motivation in learning English and 67.1% of the second grade students of SMPN 6Palembang also had good self assessment. In addition, the degree of correlation coefficientproved strong with the value of correlation 0.715 and self assessment itself contributed 51.1% tothe students’ motivation in learning English. From the above explanation, self assessmentproved significantly has a very important role in learning language especially English.Keywords: motivation, self assessment, English learning

Abstract

AbstractThe main objective of this research is to improve the tenth graders’ speaking skill throughstorytelling technique at SMK Bhakti. This research is a two-cycle-process of classroom actionresearch. The subject of the research was the students of tenth graders at SMK Bhakti-2. Therewere 20 students (12 males and 8 females). The instruments were the test, observation, interview,and diary notes. The result indicated that there was significant improvement of students’ scoresin the Pre-test to Post-test II. The mean of students’ Pre-test scores was 48.20, and 63.30 forPost-test I. On the contrary, it was 77.70 in Post-test II. It was supported by interview, diarynotes, and observation showing that there was students’ interest in learning through theimplementation of storytelling. It, therefore, is suggested for English teachers to make use of thetechnique to actively encourage and increase the students’s positive learning attitude towardsspeaking English.Keywords: storytelling technique, action research, speaking skill

Abstract

AbstractThe research was conducted to investigate the role of Pictures as the teaching media in improving the Second Graders’ English vocabulary at SD Pangudi Luhur, Jakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017. To achieve the objective, the data were collected through the tests, questionnaires and observer’s sheet. The respondents consisted of 25 students. The result showed that pictures as teaching media could improve the students’ vocabulary, proved by the increase of the mean score of the pre-test and post-test 1 and 2: 61.32; 70.48; and 81.08. The findings were also strengthened by the respondents’ positive attitudes towards the media used collected through questionnaires.Keywords: vocabulary, pictures, classroom action research

Abstract

AbstractThis research was an experimental research. It aimed to investigate the effect of using Contextual Teaching and Learning method on students’ reading comprehension to the eighth graders at SMP 3 PSKD Jakarta. To meet the aim, this research was conducted in two classes. Each class consisted of 30 students. The experimental group (VIII A) was taught using CTL method and control group (VIII B) was taught using drilling method. The classes were held twice a week and the research was conducted over a period of one months. Pre-test and post-test were employed to collect data. Both the pre-test and the post-test were administered in the two groups. The data ere analyzed using SPSS version 19.0 software. These data analysis were applied for analyzing the data obtained from four sets of tests. Data analysis showed that there is a significant effect of using Contextual Teaching and Learning Method toward students’ reading comprehension. It can be seen through the mean scores of post-test in the experimental group is 16.10 and the mean score of post-test in the control group is 15.95. Based on the result it can be said that Contextual Teaching and Learning significantly affected the eighth graders’ reading comprehension at SMP 3 PSKD Jakarta.
