Abstract

Giving instruction for a language class specifically a grammar class can be a problematic issue of controversy in EFL context for non native speaker (NNS) teacher due to the lack of approach or strategies implementation and the language problem faced in the teaching and learning process. The primary aim of this article is to provide some insight for teachers when conducting or giving instruction to the teaching of English grammar. It also highlights that in giving instruction, combining deductive and inductive approaches can be beneficial for teachers or faculties who are teaching English grammar in the setting of EFL context. Hence, they have to vary the strategies whether it should be extensive or intensive as suggested by Hinkel (2006) in which it might be one of the technique that can be put into account and applied in order to make the teaching of grammar more effective and efficient. Keywords : EFL context, deductive and inductive approaches

Abstract

The focal point of this paper is on the view of the fifth semester students of FKIP UKI on the teaching of English grammar which was gauged through a study conducted in November 2010. The findings of the study, obtained via quantitative and qualitative approaches, revealed that a majority of the respondents basically viewed grammar is important in their study of English. They also viewed knowledge of grammar plays an important role in writing, but has no significant role in speaking. In addition, the respondents seemed to prefer explicit than implicit teaching in their trial to master English grammar. The paper concludes by suggesting the need to explore new approaches to the teaching of grammar to enhance students’ autonomy in learning grammar.

Abstract

This study explores politeness strategies in conversations about transgender perspectives, using Brown and Levinson's (1987) framework. The research employed a qualitative method, analyzing recorded conversations between male and female participants discussing transgender issues from social and religious perspectives. The analysis identifies four main strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on record, and off-record. Positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, with male speakers employing it 14 times and female speakers 7 times, primarily through agreement, repetition, and joking. Negative politeness strategies appeared 10 times, equally distributed between genders, using indirectness and questions. Bald-on record strategies were used 14 times, mostly by female speakers, indicating their tendency for direct communication. The off-record strategy was minimally used, occurring only once by a male speaker. The study finds that participants' close relationships and shared knowledge facilitated the frequent use of positive politeness and bald-on record strategies. Notably, male speakers were more polite, often using positive politeness, while female speakers were more direct and explicit, especially on sensitive topics. This research highlights the influence of social dynamics and cultural norms on politeness strategies in discussions about transgender issues.

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to its widespread adoption in education, particularly in essay writing. AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly may assist students in various aspects of writing, including grammar correction, idea generation, and content refinement. This study explores students' perceptions of AI's role in essay writing, its benefits, and potential challenges related to academic integrity, creativity, and time management. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five students enrolled in an essay writing class. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that students generally perceive AI as a beneficial tool that enhances writing efficiency, provides instant feedback, and improves the technical aspects of writing. However, some participants expressed concerns about losing their personal writing style and becoming overly reliant on AI, which may hinder creativity and independent thinking. Additionally, issues related to academic integrity emerged, with students questioning whether AI-generated assistance could be considered plagiarism. Additionally, AI's impact on students' time management differed, as some experienced greater productivity, while others acknowledged increased procrastination due to AI's capacity to accelerate tasks. The findings suggest that while AI offers significant advantages, it should be used responsibly as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for independent writing skills. Educational institutions should establish clear guidelines to promote ethical AI usage and encourage students to balance AI assistance with personal effort to develop critical thinking and originality in writing. The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to its widespread adoption in education, particularly in essay writing. Abstract

The spread of hoakses in Indonesia continues to rise, as recorded by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), with more than 770 hoakses identified between August 2018 and February 2019. This phenomenon indicates that hoakses pose a serious threat, requiring continuous education and intervention efforts. Therefore, this Community Service Program (PKM) aims to enhance students' digital literacy in recognizing, identifying, and countering fake news on social media.  The workshop was conducted at SMKN 1 Klaten, involving 120 twelfth-grade students from the multimedia department. The method used in this program was an interactive workshop that included education on hoakses, practical exercises in identifying false information, and discussions on the social impact of hoaks dissemination.  Through this activity, students were equipped with the skills to become critical and responsible consumers of information in the digital era. The training, which lasted for five class hours, successfully engaged students, as evidenced by the numerous questions that arose throughout the session. It is hoped that this initiative will contribute to creating a safer digital environment and support government efforts to improve digital literacy among the younger generation.
