Abstract

Hermeneutics is an interpretive methodology used to understand a text, both the Qur'an and hadith. To some extent, it can also be functioned to analyze a person's understanding pattern. In this article, it is applied to evaluate the thoughts of a contemporary hadith scholar, namely Ṣalāḥuddīn bin Aḥmad al-Idlibī. He criticized Abu Hurairah by quoting a hadith from 'A'ishah about a corpse tortured because of her or his family's crying, and a hadith about matters that could invalidate prayers in the form of women, donkey and dogs. This research is library research with a descriptive-analytical and critical analysis approach. The theory used is Hans George Gadamer's Hermeneutic theory. This article concludes: first, the al-Idlibī’s hadith hermeneutics is influenced by the hadith development both in the past and present. Second, al-Idlibī's academic background was shaped by later orientalists who criticized Abu Hurairah's hadiths. Third, the criticism of al-Idlibī has a positive influence on the development of hadith scholarship, which has not been discussed too much by classical hadith scholars because they place more emphasis on the study of hadith sanad criticism.

Abstract

This study deals with the historical development of the exegesis of the Noble Qur'an from the first century of Islam to the end of the third century. It explains the events that elevated tafsir in this era. During these periods, the study of tafsir has gradually gained methodical activity; the Prophet's teachings to the noble Companions was the highest development towards the evolution of Quranic exegesis. However, the Prophet taught them the Qur'an and solved their problem concerning the understanding of the Quran. The paper highlights the striving of the companions in devoting their lives to learning the Qur'anic Tafsir. Therefore, the mainstream exegesis is traced to the Prophet PBUH and his companions. Then the research also elucidates the exegetical position of the successors after the companions to extend the era of the genesis of tafsir to the third century. Lastly, the study listed the scholarly roles played by these golden generations of Islam to achieve the knowledge of the authentic meaning of the Qur'an and its connotations. However, current scholars are highly advised to employ academic efforts on the study of Qur’anic exegesis in line with the direction of these three Muslim’s generations.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah’s al-Maun philosophy is a religious and social outlook developed by this organization, and underlies social programs, activities, and works it carries out in order to achieve an ideal form of human life organizing, i.e. what is called “a true Islamic society.” Inspired by the philosophical stance of existential dualism, while giving emphasis on the relative importance and significance of worldly life, this largest Muslim social association in Indonesia, in contradistinction to the the Sufis’ attitude, sees the world as a divine gift onto humankind and it is, therefore, good and innocent, as well as malleable and capable of recieving human conduct to construct it for the common benefits of humankind. This philosophy takes five principle as its bases: the doctrine of tawḥīd; the societal nature of human; the primacy of ethical values of justice, trustworthiness, fraternity, and solidarity; observance of divine law; and the importance of organization. Extracted out of sūrat al-Māʻūn in the Quran and hence its name, this philosophy aims to actualize the social dimension of maqāṣid al-sharīʻa, i.e. to realize the good interests of society’s members as a whole including, and primarily, the vernarable segment among them.
