Abstract

This study was motivated by the phenomenon of rude and cold speech patterns carried out by the main character of the children's story in the film The Secret Garden 2020. This study aims to analyse the types and triggers of Impoliteness Strategies carried out by the main character. In children's stories, there tend to be main characters who are friendly and kind so that they can be examples for their readers. However, unlike the story from the novel "The Secret Garden" by F.H. Burnett, the main character of this story is an unfriendly child, therefore the researcher wants to know what triggers the unfriendly attitude of the main character, as well as what forms of impoliteness are carried out by the main character. The researcher chose the 2020 film adaptation as the data source for this study. The story adaptation of the novel "The Secret Garden" version of 2020 presents a story through audio-visuals that can be observed carefully. Data collection was carried out by analysing the script of the film The Secret Garden 2020. The researcher collected utterances that were estimated to contain types of impoliteness strategies according to the theory of "Impoliteness Strategy" introduced by Culpeper (1996). The results of the study showed that there was the use of three of the five types of impoliteness strategies found, namely as well as several triggers for impoliteness strategy actions.

Abstract

This study aims to find the types and differences in nominalizations used in the speeches of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates: Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto, and Ganjar Pranowo. Using data from a YouTube video hosted by CSIS Indonesia titled "Pidato Calon Presiden Republik Indonesia: Arah dan Strategi Politik Luar Negeri," which aired from November 7th to November 13th, 2023, the analysis reveals key linguistic strategies. Anies Baswedan employs 90 nominalizations with a balanced distribution between deverbal (41%) and deadjectival (59%) types. In contrast, Ganjar Pranowo uses 89 nominalizations, favouring deverbal types (42%) over deadjectival (58%). Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo analyze the frequency and percentage of different affixation types in their respective languages. Anies Baswedan has the most frequent affixation, "Ke-an," with 57% of the total. In contrast, English nominalization categorizes affixation to determine types, such as deverbal and deadjectival, using suffix affixation processes. Indonesian nominalization, however, lacks such categorization, relying solely on the base word formed. These findings provide insights into the distinct linguistic styles and rhetorical preferences of the candidates.

Abstract

This study analyzes the language style and style-shifting in Peter Parker's conversations in two movies directed by Jon Watts: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). A descriptive-qualitative method was used to analyze the data. This study found that the casual language style is the most dominant in both movies. This is related to Joos' (1967) "Five Clocks of Language" with the casual type which is a relaxed, natural, and unrestricted manner language style used in everyday life. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) shows that the most prominent style-shifting is maintenance, indicating Peter Parker's tendency to maintain the language style. Meanwhile, in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) although casual style remains dominant,  Peter tended to shift his style with upward convergence, indicating that Peter Parker often adapts his interaction to be more formal. This style-shifting is related to Giles’ (1973) “Communication Accommodation Theory” with the upward convergence strategy used to adjust one’s communication style to be aligned with the interlocutor by being more formal and using a more prestigious language. While maintenance strategy occurs when a speaker chooses not to alter their communication style and use their own style consistently throughout the interaction. This difference reflects the development of Peter Parker's character between the two movies, with a more consistent style in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), compared to a more dynamic style adaptation in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
