Abstract

The host's cellular immune response plays an important role in the process of eliminating microorganisms that cause infection. Substances that can stimulate an increase in the immune response are called immunostimulators. Snail seromucoid contains bioactive compounds such as glycans, peptides, glycopeptides and chondroitin sulfate. Chitosan as an antimicrobial agent can be used in the biomedical field because chitosan has a number of hydroxyl groups (OH) and amine groups (NH2). The research objective was to determine the potency and effectiveness of snail seromucoid and chitosan as bioimmunostimulators. The research method is based on laboratory experimental results with the research stages, namely the analysis of the effectiveness of seromucoid and chitosan on lymphocyte proliferation. The results of the one way ANOVA analysis showed a p value of 0.000 so that there was a significant effect between the treatment groups, namely the effect of giving chitosan 65 ug/ml; snail mucus 65 ug/mL and a combination of chitosan (65 ug/mL) and snail mucus (65 ug/mL) ratio of 1:1, can increase lymphocyte proliferation optimally. This shows that snail mucus, chitosan and their combination in a 1:1 ratio are effective as BRM (Biological Response Modifier). It is hoped that the contribution of the results of this study can be further developed in the bioformulation of snail seromucoid preparations and chitosan as therapeutic agents for infectious diseases, including Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Tuberculosis and other diseases.

Abstract

Hand sanitizers containing alcohol-based components are frequently used to clean hands due to their usage is more effective and efficient. Natural substances, such as pine fruit, can be used to replace alcohol-based components. Pine fruit may be processed into an antibacterial liquid smoke product, making it potentially useful as an antiseptic. The purpose of this research is to see how effective pine fruit liquid smoke is at inhibiting microbial growth in vitro and in vivo. In vitro disc diffusion test against E. coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and employing disc and well diffusion methods on Aspergillus flavus ATCC 9643 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The pour plate approach was used in vivo. The in vitro test findings revealed an inhibitory zone on E. coli (5.3 mm) and S. aureus (5.83 mm) from 100% concentration of liquid smoke. The in vitro test results are supported by the in vivo test results, which indicate that the liquid smoke of pine fruit is 100% effective at preventing the growth of bacteria by 75.1% and fungi by 87.7%. The results of the questionnaire indicated that respondents liked the color (50%), and aroma (58%), that the product did not induce dryness (75%), and did not burning effects (83%). The result of this research is that 100% liquid smoke of pine fruit (Pinus merkusii) is effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli ATCC 25922 and S. aureus ATCC 25923, as well as being effective as antiseptic agents.

Abstract

Breast cancer was the main cause of death in women on the world, the percentage of breast cancer deaths in Indonesia reaching 9.6% with a prevalence of 201,143 cases of total cancer cases in 2020. The increasing incidence of breast cancer caused the use of breast cancer drugs to increase, especially natural ingredients that could be used as an alternative treatment for breast cancer with minimal side effects. Yellow root (Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr.) contained berberine compounds which was known to have cytotoxic activity. he aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic activity of the yellow root stem extract (Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr.) and its effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Extraction was obtained by maceration method with 70% ethanol as solvent. The method of testing cytotoxic activity using the MTT method assay at the concentration series (2800; 1400; 700; 350; 175; 87.5; 43.75) μg/ml then calculated the IC50 value using linear regression. The narrative review was conducted by collecting data from various online research journals using the keywords cytotoxicity of extracts of yellow root (Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr.) AND the effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL genes in MCF-7 cells. The results of the cytotoxic test showed that the extract had cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells with an IC50 of 838.67 μg/ml so that the cytotoxic effect was moderate (100-1000 μg/ml) and the results of the study of the effect of protein expression on cancer cells showed that berberine contained in yellow root can reduce the expression of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL through the mitochondrial intrinsic pathway in MCF-7 breast cancer cells so that it can induce apoptosis induction.

Abstract

Human skin has a natural protection system against the harmful effects of sunlight by thickening the stratum, corneum, and skin pigmentation. Some plants are known to have benefits that can be used as natural ingredients to protect the skin from the adverse effects of sunlight. Plants that have secondary metabolites as sunscreen activity are temu mango rhizome (Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp). Secondary metabolite compounds contained in the mango meeting include flavonoid compounds, phenolics, tannins, essential oils which are known to function as sunscreens. This study aims to determine the SPF value of temu mango rhizome (Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp) using various solvents, namely ethanol 50%, 70%, and 96%. Calculation of the SPF value using the Mansur method. The results showed that the SPF value produced by the 50% ethanol extract of temu mango rhizome (Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp) with concentrations of 1250 ppm, 2500 ppm, 3750 ppm, 5000 ppm were 9.0613; 12,4133; 10.6027; 17,1233 with an SPF value of 12,3001 including the category of maximum protection. The SPF value produced by the 70% ethanol extract of temu mango (Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp) with the same concentration was 14.1767, respectively; 13.4787; 17,699; 17.4507 with an SPF value of 15.7013 including the ultra protection category. The SPF values produced by the 96% ethanol extract of temu mango rhizome (Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp) with the same concentration were 14,892, respectively; 17.3617; 16.9197; 16,972 with an SPF value of 16,5363 including ultra protection category.

Abstract

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).Patients with severe symptoms of Coronavirus disease-19 (Covid-19) experience hyperinflammation and also a cytokine storm which contributes to the high mortality rate. A useful clinical parameter is needed for risk stratification of Covid-19 patients. This study aims to determine the relationship between Interleukin-6 and Hs-CRP values in Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms at the Prodia Makassar Clinical Laboratory. This research is an observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach. The subjects of this study were 30 patients with Covid-19 with severe symptoms, the time of the study was December 2021 - April 2022. Interleukin-6 and Hs-CRP examinations were carried out on the Roche Cobas 6000 automatic device. Analysis of the data using the Pearson-Product Moment Correlation Test using the help of the Statistical Product and Service Solution program. The results of the research analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.005. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between Interleukin-6 and Hs-CRP in Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms at the Prodia Makassar Clinical Laboratory. The relationship between the two variables is strong and positive so that as HS-CRP increases, IL-6 will also increase.
