Abstract

Organochlorine insecticide was banned for agriculture but nowadays its residue was still found  in some agricultural soil. One of ways to lowering organochlorine residue in soil is by used of degrading-organochlorine microbial consortia accompanied with compost application. However, application of exogenous microbes might affect bacterial and fungal population in soil. The pot experiment has been set up to verify the influence of Pseudomonas mallei and Trichoderma sp. and compost on total bacteria and fungi on rhizosphere of Cai Sim (Brassica juncea L.) grown on Andisols which were contaminated with organochlorine insecticide of heptachlor, endosulfan, dieldrin and DDT. Experimental design was Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replicates. The first factor was microbial consortia of P.mallei and Trichoderma sp., and the second one was kind of compost. The result showed that effect of microbial consortia on total bacteria population was determined by kind of compost. Total bacterial population in rhizosphere of Cai Sim grown with cow manure compost and microbial consortia was more increased.  However, microbial consortia as well as any kind of compost did not influence total fungal population in Cai Sim rhizosphere. In this experiment, total bacterial and fungal population in rhizosphere reached 109 cfu g-1 and  104 cfu g-1 respectively, indicating that major microbial population in rhizosphere was  in the normal range.

Abstract

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are important pests of horticultural crops with the intensity of their attacks can achieve 100%.  The control by quarantine regulations and the use of attractants will be more successful when the information about the species that attack horticultural crops has been known clearly. This study aimed to identify the species of fruit fly that attack pepper (Capsicum annum), bitter melon, guava and guava bol and to know the number and sex ratio of fruit fly pests. The method used was the survey methods, by taking/collecting pepper, bitter melon, guava and guava bol which contained fruit fly attack symptoms, maintained until it was discovered in the imago, later it was identified. Based on the results of the study, we found that fruit flies that attack the chili was B. papaya, in bitter melon was B. cucurbitae, in bool guava fruit and guava was B. Albistrigata. The number of fruit flies in chili was 21, in bitter melon was176, 89 in bol guava, and in guava was 90. Sex ratio in chili fruit flies (1:1), bitter melon (1:1), guava bol (1:1) and guava (2:1).

Abstract

Fertilization efficiency which could enhance soil productivity is determined by type, application method and appropriate dose of fertilizers.  A green house experiment to study effect of different maturity level of ela  sago bokashi and some dosage of  SP-36 fertilizer on P-uptake and growth of maize (zea mays l.) on ultisols has been performed. The experiment was set up in three-replicates factorial Randomized Block Design. The treatments were  three maturity level of ela sago bokashi i.e. 2, 3 and 4 weeks; and four dosages of SP-36 fertilizer i.e. 0, 2, 4 and 6 g/10 kg of soil. The results showed that application of bokashi regardless of their maturity at the same time with each  doses of SP-36  increased P uptake, plant height and stem diameter of maize. Giving four-week ela sago bokashi with 6 gr/10 kg of soil of SP-36 was the best treatment to improve P uptake, plant height and stem diameter of corn crop up to  0.15%, 140, 60 cm and 1.64 mm respectively.

Abstract

Organic matter and inorganic fertilizer application are important to maintain the existence of potential microbes in the rhizosphere and maintain the soil quality. A greenhouse experiment has been carried out to determine the effect of  vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on total bacterial and Azotobacter  population in rhizosphere and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in soil order of  Inceptisols. The experimental design was a factorial randomized complete block design with three replicates were tested three doses of vermicompost (7.5, 15 and 22.5 t ha-1) and four doses of inorganic fertilizers; NPK (300; 450; 600 and 750 kg ha-1). The results showed that there was no significant interaction between vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on either total bacterial or Azotobacter population, as well as on fresh weight of lettuce. Both vermicompost and NPK fertilizer did not affect the biological parameters. However, the application of 750 kg/ha NPK fertilizer can increased lettuce weight up to 24% compared to that of control. This study suggested that in the relatively poor soil nutrients, lettuce growth was depend on inorganic fertilizers.
