Abstract

Across time, humanity has cried out for justice in the face of injustice. In Indonesia, justice is also affirmed as a fundamental pillar of national life in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution. Discussions of justice frequently turn to the book of Amos, yet they often concentrate primarily on social justice. This article reexamines justice in Amos through a dialogical reading of the book's literary context together with its historical, social, and religious contexts. The analysis argues that justice in Amos is multifaceted, encompassing distributive, retributive, restorative, theonomic, and mimetic dimensions. It further proposes that syncretism may be understood as a theological root of injustice because distorted relations with God are reflected in distorted human relations. Finally, the article brings Amos's vision of justice into dialogue with influential modern theories of justice in order to enrich contemporary reflection on the meaning and practice of justice.

Abstract

This research examines Augustine’s theological views on music and their implications for the church as it reconsiders the motivations and purposes of using music, particularly where music tends to focus on emotional experience.  I argue that Augustine’s theology offers a constructive alternative: the congregation should understand music not merely as something that satisfies the emotions of the soul, but as a “sign” that points to realities beyond itself and can guide the soul toward God. More specifically, I argue that Augustine: (1) offers both subjective and objective perspectives on music that can help God’s people develop a more holistic view; (2) understands harmonically ordered music and its content as an act of love that can help those whose lives have become chaotic and disintegrated to be reintegrated and prepared to encounter God; (3) presents music as a means through which God educates the faithful to develop spiritual awareness and discover a reality beyond the beauty of music itself; (4) encourages the church to consider theological reasons for its various practices of music; and (5) critiques music performers in ways that can encourage churches to attend more carefully to music ministers and to remain vigilant against popularity, money, and personal pleasure while reflecting on the deeper essence of music.

Abstract

Abstract

The spirit of the Antichrist is often interpreted literally as an eschatological enemy of Christ who will persecute the church near the end of history. This interpretation, which remains influential in some Pentecostal settings, commonly treats the appearance of the Antichrist as a sign of the end times. Yet the term antichrist occurs only in the Johannine Letters and not elsewhere in the New Testament. This article therefore exegetes 1 John 4:1-6 in its historical and literary contexts to reconsider the identity of the “spirit of the Antichrist.” It argues that the phrase does not primarily denote a future eschatological being, but a present reality manifested in teaching that denies the true identity of Jesus Christ and, consequently, in conduct that contradicts his command to love. The passage thus calls the church to discern false teaching and to recognize that the antichrist spirit may operate both outside and within the Christian community.
