Abstract

This research is conducted in the Salayo Nagari (local state), Kubung District, Solok Regency. There, the traditional wedding Perkawinan Alek Gadang includes the interesting ceremony of Malam Bakuruang, which is celebrated by slaughtering cow and water buffalo. There are several activities in the wedding; pulang dahulu (the groom comes home after the akad nikah (marriage contract), before the wedding ceremony), maanta nasi patang (the bride’s family presents foods for the groom’s family in the afternoon after the groom’s home), manurunkan marapulai (dress the groom), maanta marapulai (escort the groom to the bride’s house), malam bakuruang (the slaughtering ceremony), and arak-arakan (parade). Abstract

This study aims to uncover the causes and solutions to the discrepancy of information from BAAK and Puskom of State University of Padang (UNP). Hence, students often have to revisits both institutions when dealing with an administration problem. In this study, researcher uses the standard form of communication experience to measure communication audit conducted. Measurement standard was chosen because it is considered most appropriate to the communication audit to be conducted. The study found that the causes of the discrepancy of information between BAAK and Puskom UNP are Personal Factors (selective perception, some imprecise phrases) and Organizational Factors (status or position in the organization, prestige). This does not supposed to happen because as a formal organization, UNP have Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) to handle problems concerned with BAAK and Puskom. Abstract

This research aims to analyse the construction of reality on sharia bylaws in the English newspaper The Jakarta Post. The Jakarta Post is currently the biggest national English newspaper with readership includes educated middle class and high-end as well as foreign audience, making its role siginificant in representing news of Indonesia abroad. This qualitative research uses descriptive design and framing analysis to analyse the framing of news about the implementation of sharia bylaws by The Jakarta Post. The research concludes that The Jakarta Post frames sharia bylaws as controversial and incompatible with the legal system and the plural society of Indonesia. Abstract

This research studied about students’ religious activities in Padang State University (UNP). These religious activities were meant to help the students develop good characters and attitude. However, reality showed contrast between these students’ behaviors and their religious values, such as frequently getting involved in student fights or doing any other amoral acts. Regarding the problem, this research aimed to observe the religious activities conducted by UNP’s students and describe the implementation of the activities. The design of this research was qualitative, with students conducting religious activities as the source of information. The instruments were observation, interviews and documentaries review. The research found that religious activities were conducted in the form of both intracurricular (included in the curriculum) and extracurricular which were managed and organized by religious education lecturers, and coordinated by the students. There were also other activities which were directly managed by the students of each faculty at UNP. Generally, those activities had similar visions and could give positive effect to students. Abstract

This research aimed to reveal the factors that motived the married women and whoever has ever married to do the crime. This research used qualitative approach and descriptive method by describing the facts and investigating phenomenon systematically. The finding of this research indicated that behavior of married women and women who has ever married tended to change and differ from those they had when they were not yet married. Abstract

This article describes the world of and images of women depicted in women fiction writer, particularly in short story literature. In depicting women’s world, an Indonesian writer tends to focus on their domestic than public life. This is because domestic life is considered safer for women, and women are considered best settled in the domestic life. There are six images closely associated with women; a mother, a loyal woman, a successful woman, a second woman, an ideal woman, and a bad woman. Mother image is the most found, 14 of 15 fictions examined in this research. The description of domestic life associates with mother image, because the two are closely related with the life of Indonesian women. Key words: women’s world, women’s image, women’s literature

Abstract

Ecologically, Madura Island has dry ecotype in a tropical weather, limy land, low rainfall, and low soil productivity. This condition contributes to shaping Maduraneses’ unique characters, not only in social relations but also moral economy. The Madura habitation pattern of tanean lanjang is a form of social unit creating self-confident individuals and community relations based on individualistic spirit. Ecological limitations makes Maduraneses trust not land ethics but labour ethics. The individualistic and self-confident characters result in Madura’s social and moral economic relations with simple, hardworking, deligent, thrifty, and religious individuals. Abstract

This research aims to; (a) identify women’s involvement in the development of nagari (local state), (b) identify community efforts in empowering women to participate in the nagari development, (c) identify the women empowerment programs conducted by related agencies and institutions, (4) indentify the pattern of women empowerment in order to participate in the nagari development, and (5) identify community values that underlie women’s participation in the nagari development. This research is descriptive qualitative. It is conducted in coastal areas of Padang Pariaman regency, represented by each nagari in each of these districts: Ulakan Tapakis, Sungai Limau, Batang Gasan, and Lubuk Alung. Data is collected using questionnaires, interviews, direct observation, and library research. Data is analyzed qualitatively. The result shows that; 1) only a small number of women involves in the nagari development, due to the low level of education, 2) most community’s efforts in empowering women to participate in the nagari development depend only on the information or initiatives by the government whose meetings are part of government programs, 3) women empowerment program is held by the local agencies and institution, 4) women empowerment encouraged by the respondents are held in the coastal areas with coastal tourism, where women are active in coastal-based entrepreneurship, 5) women participation in every aspects of political, social, and cultural development are based on the value adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah (traditional value based on the interpretation of the Koran).Key words:  women involvement, participation, development

Abstract

This research aims to reveal religious and moral values in kaba (a type of Saga in Minangkabau literature) and rabab Pasisie (a type of percussion in Minangkabau particularly the one from Pesisir Selatan regency). The research is qualitative descriptive. The data, primary and secondary, is collected by observation, interview, and documentation. The interviewees are selected through purposive sampling. The data is then tested by triangulation of the sources, and then analysed using selection, reduction, classification, and presentation of data, which is later concluded. The result shows that rabab Pasisie is still fancied by the communities in Nagari Duku Kecamatan Koto XI of Tarusan District. The research concludes that kaba and rabab Pasisie embodies moral values that can be applied in the daily life of the community. We suggest that the leader of Nagari Duku Kecamatan Koto XI of Tarusan District promulgate the traditional rabab as a consideration to make it cultural tourism, while the Minangkabau society can implement moral values in kaba, and it is important that the district’s youth continue to learn and play rabab to maintain the traditional arts.
