Abstract

The increasing intensity of international relations and globalization has spurred interests in local events of not only domestic audience but also foreign audience. Some events have become the interest of the public in other countries that the foreign media publish news about the events. The media cover events in a foreign country because the events will influence the government’s foreign policy toward that country. Presidential election leads to the replacement of a country’s leader. Meanwhile, a country’s international relations and foreign policy are influenced by decision making individual such as state and government leader. Personalities, perceptions, activities, and leadership style of the leader influence foreign policy of a country, therefore different leader will make different foreign policy. Indonesian presidential election is covered by foreign media particularly those in countries with good relations with Indonesia. Some Americans pay attention to Indonesian presidential election because it will affect the two countries’ bilateral relation. The New York Times, the most referred print and digital media by American foreign policy makers, also covered the election. Abstract

Liberal thoughts argue that men have rational and logical ability to decide the rightest and best choice for themselves, which means that men are autonomous in determining their life’s orientation and truth. Therefore men cannot be forced to accept certain general truth from the society because each person have distinguished goal, which is incommensurable. The single interpretation of truth is considered incompatible with human ability to contemplate their objectives. This makes the basis of the secular practice in American society; the separation of church (religion) and state, where religion is considered private matters. The amendment of the constitution clearly notes that state should not make any law respecting or against practice of any religion. This practice can be seen in the American mass media, where most hold liberal view and shun away from religious debates. Media as a public sphere play an important role in facilitating the debate about discourses, therefore refrain from  private matters such as religion. Key words: liberal self-determinism, secularism, American media

Abstract

During the first half of 2015, Indonesia executed fourteen prisoners who had been convicted of smuggling drugs to and from Indonesia. Twelve of them were foreigners. This execution led to withdrawal of the ambassador of Brazil, Netherlands, and Australia, whose citizens are among those executed. Criticism came from around the world, and small number of Indonesians. Most critics cited human rights abuse; and death penalty is against international law. However, the lack of further explanation can make the statement misunderstood. The distinctive nature of international law is one factor that makes death penalty issue is still debatable. Another factor is the inconsistent world’s reaction on human rights issues, showing realistic behavior in international relations. Therefore it is important to understand the nature of international law from the realist perspective of international relations in explaining death penalty in Indonesia. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate Indonesia’s death penalty from the realist perspective of international law. Keywords: realism, international law, international relations, death penalty

Abstract

As a country that once relied heavily on the forestry industry, Malaysia is slowly trying to change their economic dependence to a more sustainable resource, however, the continued reliance on forest resources is creating a conflict between protection as well as development of the forest reserves.  To better understand the conflict that exists within the debates among the political elites in Malaysia, this paper examines the speeches on permanent reserved forests by decision makers in the Malaysian Parliamentary debates. These parliamentary debates (n = 229) were analysed using content analysis where three major themes in PRFs were identified: (1) industry and economic development; (2) environmental protection, conservation and impact; and (3) social development and community rights. Results show that economic concerns related to agriculture, timber and development dominated the parliamentary debates throughout the early discussions and the topic of PRF has been framed as primarily an economic issue by the political elites throughout the period of analysis. While there have been environmental issues discussed frequently in the debates, little change has occurred in the discussions on PRFs, which means the fundamental policy underpinning the management of these forests has not changed since colonial times. Peaks in the discussion of permanent reserved forests are associated with key legislations and events within Malaysia. This analysis indicates that the governance of PRF is largely unchanged, and while the new government indicated change could occur, the fact that they fell within two years of election does not lend to a positive note. The analysis has implications for future governance of forestry in Malaysia, which is decidedly embedded within the principle of resource use, inherited from the British era. If forests are to be protected, the fundamental principle of resource use has to be reconstructed entirely.

Abstract

Determining the prevalence of sarcopenia and identifying associated factors can aid in early detection and treatment among community-dwelling elderly. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and identify associated factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the elderly community within the two areas of Public Health Center, Semarang, Indonesia, through random sampling. Sarcopenia was defined based on the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria. Data on socio-demographics, clinical, and functional status were collected and associated factors analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Of the 153 participants, the prevalence of severe sarcopenia was 50.33%, and overall sarcopenia prevalence was 44.44%. Elderly individuals with severe sarcopenia had a mean age of 69.45, with a higher occurrence in women (79.2%) compared to men. Age (p=0.003; APR: 1.105; 95% CI: 1.035-1.180), toilet type (p=0.002; APR: 4.194; 95% CI: 1.677-10.493), and being female (p=0.049; APR: 2.341; 95% CI: 1.003-5.460) were identified as risk factors for severe sarcopenia. The prevalence of severe sarcopenia is elevated among community-dwelling elderly. Sarcopenia was defined as low muscle mass with low handgrip strength and/or low gait speed. Routine check-ups are needed to detect sarcopenia and its risk factors in primary health care to enable early intervention for sarcopenia in the elderly.
