Abstract

In this study, it is analyzed lexical meaning in a text of written language which is applied on Obey’s T-shirt. These meanings furthermore constructed descriptive interpretations. The theory used in this study is theories of lexical semantics in Mansoer Pateda (2010). Reseach method in this study is descriptive analysis which is conducted by using analytic approach and operational approach of lexical meaning. This approach includes meaning component segmentation and lexical meaning analysis. The result of this study which is conducted on eight product samples is that each product has its own characteristic which can be constructed through interpretation based on lexical meaning of each entity in the product. The lexical meaning which is analyzed is capable to construct meaning related to the object outside the language. Both meaning, lexical and cognitive meanings are able to construct an interpretation as a meaning representation of a text as a whole part.

Abstract

Addition is one of translation strategies in Structural Shift that is aimed to maintain the original meaning from source language into target language. This research studied about Addition in the translation of James Dashner’s The Scorch Trials into Indonesian Meydina Arrisandi’s The Scorch Trials. The Scorch Trials novel was chosen because the Addition frequently found in its translation version. Addition is determined based on the explicit structure found in the target language and it is being analysed using componential analysis and propositional analysis through semantics viewpoint. Additionally, through pragmatics viewpoint, implicature, context analysis, and deixis analysis through are used in the analysis. There are 124 data found from the novel; and from those data, 1datum is full equivalent, 1 datum is partial equivalent, and 1 datum is no equivalent presented in the paper as representation.. This research is aimed to identify how addition is used in the translation process, and it was found that addition is especially used to make clear the implicit meaning from the source language or to maintain the similar meaning.

Abstract

The study analyzes the fact that before lead to different categories based on their distribution in English sentence; the study focuses on examining the occurrence of before as a particular word category in sentence. Thus, this study aims to discuss the categories of before and to identify what constituent that determines the categories of before and According to those aim, this study takes a title, ‘Identification Part of Speech of English Words Before.’ For this study, the data were collected from COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) as the main source of research data. The data were identified by observing the sentence that contained word before, and then were classified into their specific categories. Lastly, the data were analyzed using Radford’s theory (2004). The results of the study show that there are three categories of words before; those are, prepositions, adverbial, and conjunctions. After analyzing comprehensively, the results are: (1) the word before as adverb is following the other adverb or verb (2) the word before as the conjunction are followed by clause that is constituted by subject and verb, (3) the word before as the preposition is followed by the noun phrase. However in this article the word before as conjunction can be preposition when the subject and the verb of the clause are reduced.

Abstract

This research entitled “Declarative mood of Ideational Theme in “Exupery’s The Little Prince” (A Functional Grammar Analysis) discusses declarative mood in ideational theme in the position of clause used in novel. The purpose of this research is to analyze declarative mood and to analyze the constituents used in the novel The Little Prince. To analyze the issues, this research uses the theory of mood types: declarative mood by M.A.K Halliday and Christian Matthiessen (2004) as the grand theory while Linda Gerot dan Peter Wignell (1994) as supporting theory. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis. Data are taken from the novel The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery. After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that the all data are included into the declarative mood in this research, two data are included into constituent the nominal group as theme, and one data is included include into constituent prepositional phrase as theme in this research.

Abstract

The research entitled “Identification of Unit Shift from Word to Phrase in English-Indonesian Translation of Ms Wiz Spells Trouble by Terence Blacker” finds the unit shift and classifies the unit shift in Ms Wiz Spells Trouble short stories by Terrence blacker. The theory used in this research is unit shift by Catford as seen in his book entitled ‘A Linguistic Theory of Translation’. Descriptive analysis method is used to analyze the data in the research. Based on the analysis, unit shift is a change of a unit in source language to a different unit in target language. There are two classified unit shift in the research; from Adverb to adverbial phrase and adjective to adjective phrase.
