The aim of this research was to find out the types and the dominant type of thematic progression in the background section of theses written by undergraduate students of the English Department of Bengkulu University (UNIB) in 2017. The design was descriptive quantitative. The sample consisted of 16 background sections of undergraduate theses, which were chosen randomly. The data were collected by the documentation instrument. The result showed that there were three types of thematic progression, namely, constant theme, linear theme, and split rheme. Furthermore, the linear theme was the dominant type.The order of frequency was as follows: linear theme (50.07%), constant theme (45.81%), and split rheme (4.10%). The conclusion was that all types of thematic progression were used and that the linear theme was the most common in the background section of the UNIB undergaduate theses.

This research is aimed at finding the language learning strategy used by successful students that is categorized into six kinds of strategies; memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, compensation, and social strategy suggested by Oxford (1990). The population of the research are students of English study program University Bengkulu year 2014 and 2015 that have GPA 3.51 to 4.00. Methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative. Data were collected by using questionnaires as the instruments. The questionnaires consist of 50 items based on Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 about language learning strategy. The data were processed by using Microsoft Excel 2013 to find the most dominant strategy used by the students. The results showed that the successful students use more than one language learning strategy or mixed strategy, including memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, compensation, and social strategy. The dominant strategy used by successful students was metacognitive with mean score 3.94 followed by compensation (3.81), cognitive (3.59), social (3.43), memory (3.31), and affective strategy (3.30). Metacognitive strategies have positive and significant influence toward academic achievement on successful students in learning a language. Metacognitive strategies can help the students to develop good thinking management ability. It also create good academic achievement. In the other hand, the choice of lowest strategy seems to be affected by technology advances, curriculum, feelings, mood, and attitude of the students which is unpredictable.

The aim of this research was to find out the strategies used by the English Education Study Program students in learning reading skill. The research was designed as a comparative research. The population of the research was 74 students of English Education Study Program of Universitas Bengkulu in the 2015/2016 academic year. The samples were 74 students which consist of 59 successful students and 15 unsuccessful students, taken all of the total population. The data were collected by using a set of questionnaire and documentation. There were 45 statements of reading learning strategies which consisted of six categories of learning strategies proposed by Oxford (1990). They were Memory related, metacognitive strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation and social affective strategy. The instrument of this research was adopted from Tabehinejad (2015). Meanwhile documentation instrument was transcript score from the sixth semester English Education Study Program. The result of this study showed between unsuccessful and successful students of English Education Study Program preferred to use all category of that learning strategy. In addition, the most frequently used strategy group by unsuccessful students was social and cognitive strategy. Meanwhile successful students used strategy group was social strategy.

AN INVESTIGATION OF LISTENING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES USED BY SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU Afrian Reastu Prayogi; Elfrida .; Mei Hardiah

This research aims to find out the listening comprehension strategies used by sixth semester students of English Education Study Program at University of Bengkulu. The subject of this research is all sixth semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/2018. This research was using descriptive quantitative as the methodology and the data was collected by using questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire consisted of 35 items which represent the use of listening comprehension strategies from cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies. This research uses Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 to analyze the data. Oxford’s (1990) rating scheme for strategy use was used to determine the category of listening comprehension strategies use. The result of data analysis shows that students use cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies in listening comprehension. Cognitive strategy was used as the most highly use of strategies in listening comprehension with the mean score 3.54 (high), followed by socio-affective strategy with the mean score 3.43 (moderate) and metacognitive strategy with the mean score 3.4 (moderate). From the results, it is concluded that students are using strategies mostly when doing a listening task at the classroom, by using the lexical and grammatical competences also background knowledge to understand the listening materials.

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of slip of the tongue made by English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University in their proposal seminar presentation and to identify the dominant type of slip of the tongue made by English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University in their proposal seminar presentation. The samples of this study were 5 Students English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University who carry out seminars of each student proposal on February 23rd, 2018 and on April 27th, 2018. The instrument used in this research was the writer herself. The data were collected by using documentary method. To analyze the data, the qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. The results of this research show that there are 60 data which are taken from the proposal seminar presentation of English students. In those data there are 6 of 8 types of slip of the tongue found in students’ presentation; Anticipation, Perseveration, Exchange, Substitution, Addition and Deletion. This research is aimed at finding the most dominant move, step and the most common pattern of rhetorical style in Research Article Introduction in Law Studies Written By International Authors. The documentation technique and checklist were used in this research. Fifteen English RA introductions by International authors were analyzed by using disourse analysis technique, using quantitative as well as qualitative method and following Swales’s CARS Model (1990). The results show that the authors dominantly use Move 1 (Establishing a territory) and Step 2 of Move 1 (Making Topic Generalisation). The fifteen articles mostly have the same model in leading to understanding to the article introduction. In addition, International authors of English RAs in Law Study prefer describing the phenomena and found the problem based on it to describing the previous research. The most common pattern is Complete Pattern. The articles which belong to Complete Pattern have three moves. While the one which has two moves belong to Semi complete and the one which has one move only belong to incomplete pattern. In conclusion, the articles in the three journals are categorized into appropriate articles in term of discourse structure.

The objectives of this research are to find out the types of errors and the most dominant error of using gerunds (as a subject of a sentence, as an object of preposition or after pr eposition, as a direct object of certain verbs, after a special expression and as a passive form) by the sixth semesterstudents of English Education Study Program of UNIB in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of this research consisted of 77 students. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The result of the analysis shows that the students made errors in all five types of gerunds. There were 27.1% (809) errors of using gerund as direct object of certain verbs, 24.5% (735) errors of using gerund as passive form, 20.8% (624) errors of using gerund after special expression, 15.5% (463) errors of using gerund as object of preposition or after preposition, 12.1% (361) errors of using gerund as subject of a sentence. Evidently, the most dominant errors made by the students of using gerund were the gerunds as direct object of certain verbs.

RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF STAND-UP COMEDY PERFORMANCES BY THREE FAMOUS AMERICAN COMICS Fadly Dzil Ikram; Safnil Arsyad; Gita Mutiara Hati

This research aimed at finding the rhetorical of narrative section based on Labov’s model and the stand-up comedy techniques which dominantly used by Jim Jefferies, Ricky Gervais, and Bill Burr on their performances. The observation checklist was used in this research. Fifteen different topics performance from each stand-up comedian were analyzed by using descriptive method, using quantitative as well as qualitative data. From the result it was found that three stand-up comedians used narrative section suggested by Labov. The narrative section is abstract, orientation, complicating actions, resolution, and coda. Also, the most frequent techniques used by three stand-up comedians are rule of three and one liner technique. Those techniques are the most effective technique that can trigger audience laughter. The last finding of this research, there are two common patterns created by three stand-up comedians based on Labov’s model of narrative sections.

This research is aimed to find out and explain the characteristics of women character, to know how the novel portrayed the women and how Indonesian women on education portrayed. According to the data, the researcher gets the result that show characteristics of 3 major women characters. Daisy Buchanan has two characteristics, there are Pessimistic and Materialistic, Jordan Baker also has two, Masculine and Worried, and the last is Myrtle Wilson is Materialistic. Besides that, the researcher also explains the portrayal of women in the novel and relate it to the 1920s era where does the novel come from. The researcher also compared and portrayed the characteristics of American women in the novel and Indonesian women characters.

The research is aimed at finding out the politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson politeness strategies theory that used by the members of UKM Debat, the University of Bengkulu when practice debate. The subject of this research was the members of UKM Debat, the University of Bengkulu that consist of eight students. This research was using descriptive qualitative as the methodology and the data were collected by using transcript from video recorder and observation sheet as the instruments. The result of data analysis shows that the debaters use all of politeness strategies but they do not used all sub strategies when practice debate, which is bald on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record. There were 28 utterances that consist of politeness strategy. The debaters mostly applied positive politeness strategy, which occurs 19 times (67,8%). Bald on record and off record occur 4 times (14,3%) and the last is negative politeness strategy which occurs 1 times (3,6%). Positive politeness strategy gets the highest position in the data because in practicing debate, all debaters have known each other and have a close relationship
