Abstract

The paper concentrates on investigating the implementation of assessment literacy at the tertiary level of Bangladesh. It also tries to explore the existing challenges which the teachers face in ELT classroom while implementing effective assessment techniques in evaluating academic examination scripts. In this regard, a survey method involving a questionnaire survey was used to obtain a quantitative insight of the study. After studying the responses from 10 respondents of two public universities of Bangladesh, the researcher attained the findings that demonstrated respondents’ experience and suggestions regarding assessment literacy in English language teaching at undergraduate level in the respective university, which include a number of barriers, like lack of training in achieving assessment literacy, insufficient support from the university, and disparity between learning objectives and assessment techniques. To ensure bonafide assessment literacy, the findings also provided some feasible suggestions, like offering students an opportunity to convert test into learning experiences, ensuring appropriate math between assessment and learner ability and regulating self-assessment on regular basis.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the type of onomatopoeia that used in the comic, the meaning of the onomatopoeic word, and the syllabic structure of the onomatopoeic word. The object of this research is a Peanut comic by Charles M. Schulz. The theory used in this research is based on Ullman’s theory. The result showed that there were two types of onomatopoeias found in the comic, the primary and secondary onomatopoeias. From 71 words, the dominant type found was the secondary onomatopoeia. It was also found that some forms of onomatopoeia have the same word with different meaning, depended on the subject and object that produces the sound. Some words come up more than once according to the storyline in the comic. The form of syllabic structure that the mostly used is Consonant-Consonant-Vocal-Consonant or CCVC, there were 20 out of a total 71 onomatopoeia that have the CCVC form.

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 situation has converted the teaching and learning process from face-to-face interaction in the classroom into virtual classroom environment. This condition caused challenges for many parties, including teachers as the main agent in the classroom. This study is intended to find out the teachers’ barriers and supports in conducting online learning. A descriptive qualitative method design through an open-ended questionnaire was chosen. Interview were also used to triangulate the data. Twenty-one teachers from sub-urban areas in Cimahi and Bandung were selected as the participants. The findings revealed three issues becoming teachers' challenges, namely, technology, course content, and students. In the first issue, the classic problem of online learning occurred, which was internet connectivity. The second problem was that the teachers had obstacles in making adjustments to design, deliver, and follow-up the material. Then the last issue was the students’ participation as well as technological access. Regarding the supports, the teachers had gained back up from the government, school, and parent in conducting online learning. Furthermore, this study recommended three optional solutions to help the teacher facing their barriers in virtual teaching, in terms of students’ participation in online learning, learning materials, and facilities in supporting the learning activities.

Abstract

The research backgrounds are conventional literary learning, less supportive learning facilities, the low students’ reading interest on the literary books, especially on the books of literary criticism, and the lack of grade writing ability of literary criticism. This research is aimed to recognize the benefits of pragmatic criticism on the novel Lingkar Tanah Lingkar Air (LTLA) written by Ahmad Tohari. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The results of this research are as follows: (1) LTLA novel tells about Amid, Kiram, Jun, Jalal, and Kang Suyud as Hezbollah forces whose basic struggle is lillahi taala (because of Allah), (2) LTLA novel is interpreted as a novel about the conflict of inner-soul in keeping their faith as moslem and their hate to Republican Army as many of them did not pray,  and (3) as an evaluation of LTLA, background of this story based on the life of Indonesian people since the days of the Darul Islam ruled by Kartosuwiryo. The conclusions of LTLA novel are educative, namely: (1) inviting to keep loyal to the Indonesian state and its people; (2) carrying out the commands of religion (Islam) properly and correctly; and (3) love each other’s soul and inner fellow people.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the Islamic character implemented by the English Tadris lecturer in the learning process in the English Tadris Study Program at IAIN Curup. The method used was descriptive quantitative by using inferential percentage formula. The sample of this research is 127 students taken from the total number of English Tadris students, 234 students using the Hery King homogeny. The results of this study indicate the first 60.6% of lecturers implement religious aspects of greeting is Islam such as “Assalamualaikum, bismillahirrohmanirrohim, alhamdulillahirrobilalamin, in starting and ending lessons. Second, 48.8% of the lecturers implements aspects the lecturer uses clothes according to the Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Curup code of ethics. Third, 47.2% in aspect Appreciating Achievement, the statement used is that the lecturer gives high motivation to students to continue learning. Fourth, 44.2% in democratic aspect, and statement of this aspect namely lecturers are open in accepting student opinions. Fifth,43.3% is the spirit of nationality aspect, the statements in this aspect are the lecturers commemorate national (Indonesian Independence day, Heroes day, mother's day, etc) and Islamic day (Maulid of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, Halal bi halal, Islamic Miraj, Islamic new year).

Abstract

This paper explores English language teachers’ perception of critical pedagogy and equity promotion in lingo-cultural diverse classroom. The study concerns how the teachers find multicultural students’ problems and address them in the classroom. The study further investigates how teachers use dimensions of equity (multicultural education, social justice education and culturally responsive pedagogy) to promote social harmony, critical awareness and independent learning. In the study, I have used narrative inquiry as a research method, selected six participants purposively from public schools of Kathmandu and collected information from in-depth semi-structured interviews. I have employed multiple layers of thematic analysis, interpreted narrative data and developed six different themes: facility and access, classroom management, language and behavior, classroom activities, feedback and reinforcement and evaluation procedures. On the basis of this study, what I found that school environment, classroom activities, evaluation procedures and feedback and reinforcement are the major factors for the influence of their students’ participation. The school management has major role to facilitate and encourage teachers for the promotion of students centered methods such as project based learning and collaborative learning. Along all these aforementioned themes, teachers have prominent role to run active participatory classroom activities through student friendly activities like language games and healthy academic debate. Not only that, teachers are equally responsible to identify at-risk students and address their issues immediately to promote independent learning. Furthermore, to evaluate students’ progress, intra-personal comparative evaluation procedure is found more effective than inter-personal comparative evaluation procedures to encourage them to strive ahead with self-respect. The study expects relevant recommendations in the field of content-based child-friendly teaching learning activities where students participate actively enjoy the activities and learn from self and others.

Abstract

Bangladesh, like many other countries of the world, has been strongly hit by COVID-19 pandemic and her education sector, among other essential fields of life, is under strict lockdown. The onsite mode of institutional education is absolutely stopped although of late educational institutes mostly non-governmental ones, with the permission as well as guidelines of the Ministry of Education and/or University Grand Commission (UGC), have adopted and are implementing online classes as an alternative way of imparting education. Accordingly, English language teaching and learning is happening in full swing via online classes. However, many have raised questions as to the rationale of executing virtual education and assessment, especially how to teach and assess the four skills, i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, of English language through online sessions when majority of the teachers and students are fundamentally bereft of the essential technological resources and internet coverage. On these notes, the current study has sought to learn the experience and perceptions of 50 teachers and 50 students who are currently teaching and learning English through online classes at various institutes across the country. The researcher has interviewed the sample population with two disparate open-ended questionnaires through e-mail and social networking cites, like Messenger and Facebook to learn teachers’ and learners’ experiences and suggestions on the present online education nationwide and how much feasible it is if COVID-19-pandemic lockdown persists longer only to make education system run through a “new normal” manner. The study offers crucial findings relating to a number of technology and internet-related unsolved issues. Simultaneously, it suggests ineludible modifications to be accomplished on teachers, learners, educational institutions, technological resources and internet communications if ELT through online is to be made fruitful.

Abstract

In teaching writing, media is an essential aspect This research discovers students’ perception on weblogs as an educational tool in writing class in order to improving students’ writing skill. This quantitative research discussed 30 English Foreign Language (EFL) students. In obtaining the data, the thirty students of 8th semester at English Study Program of IAIN Curup were given a set of questionnaire to get students’ response on weblogs. After obtaining the data, the researcher analyzes the students response by counting its frequency and percentage. The findings of this research Indicated that the majority of students have positive perception on weblogs based on five indicators that is provided by researcher, those are: students confidence to write, writing skill improvement, Information and Communication Technology experience and knowledge, critical thinking promotion and accessible aspect. This research revealed that students give positive response to the use of weblogs as a medium in writing class. Furthermore, students also prefer to do their assignment on blog rather than write conventionally on paper. Findings of this research also advise the English teacher and lecturer to consider weblogs as medium and learning tool in school and university since it can encourage students’ writing achievement. The researcher also provide conclusion in this article.

Abstract

In the early time of the president’s announcement about the first patient infected the Coronavirus in Indonesia, a governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, uploaded the information of the president’s announcement in his Instagram account @ridwankamil. The Instagram post received many comments as responses from his followers. Regarding the issue, this study aims at seeing the netizens' responses to the news about the first patient who infected the Coronavirus in Indonesia, Ridwan Kamil posted on Instagram through the theory of expressive speech act. In this research, the researchers used qualitative descriptive research. The instruments of this research are observation and document. Random sampling is used as a Data collection technique. The researchers organizes the data by choosing the comments on Ridwan Kamil’s Instagram posting randomly, then the researchers tried to find out, selected, and classified the expressive speech acts used by netizens. The last, researchers explained the result of the analysis. As a result, the researchers found that the responses given by netizens on Instagram contained an expression of wishing, expression of complaining, and expression of protest. Through the comments written by netizens, they tries to give the aspiration to the government to solve the problems that citizens complained or protested about the COVID-19.

Abstract

This study is designed to find out students’ views on their explicit and implicit language aptitude profiles, TOEFL scores and language proficiency. Based on purposive sampling scheme, the data were collected from sixty-five students in the end of their eighth semester at the English department in faculty of teacher training in UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. The students were asked to respond to the five points Likert scale questionnaire which consists of four parts: Part A elicits the participants’ demographic information, Part B on language experience, Part C on language aptitude, and Part D especially on TOEFL and language proficiency.  The findings revealed that language learning success is attributed to a number of individual factors. The individual factors related to foreign language learning can be divided into affective factors (e.g., motivation, attitude, and personality) and cognitive factors (e.g., intelligence, aptitude). The cognitive factors interact with affective factors for learning a particular language which may explain why a person is better able to learn a language over another language. Thus, a full model of language learning that considers the impact of language aptitude on learning should also investigate the combined mediating role of individual differences such as motivation, anxiety, and learner’s beliefs.
