Abstract

This study aimed to determine how Google Classroom enhanced English language learning in students' English at the Faculty of Literature and Humanities in the online learning system during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research was a classroom action research (CAR) conducted from March to July 2020. Classroom action research consists of four stages; planning, actions, observation, and reflection. It is better to fix this section as follows: The stage; teacher planning (preparation and pre-test), action (teaching by using Google Classroom), observation (Classroom observation), and reflection (personal reflection and post-test). The features of LMS Google Classroom promote the development of independent learners in which students can be triggered to access the information in any place and time. This research shows that the LMS Google Classroom learning model is considered an effective learning model to enhance independent learning. Data of the Speaking test has described in finding that there is significance increasing from pre-test to post-test. The score increased from 1103 in the pre-test to 1618 in the post-test. It shows an increase in mean score from 36.7667 in the pre-test to 54.1467 in the post-test. E-Learning is running well, especially for speaking classes. By using LMS Google Classroom in English teaching can help students to improve their English skills. Teaching English by implementing Learning Management System Google Classroom at the university can effectively improve students' English competency, where almost all students agree to this point. Twenty-five students agreed that this learning model could improve the students’ competencies, and only one student disagrees. For speaking teaching that some of the students disagree with using LMS Google Classroom, six students gave a negative response, and 24 agreed. The analysis results showed that the English Literature Study Program students at the Islamic University of Makassar responded well when their lecturer used LMS Google Classroom in the learning process.

Abstract

Islam has given mercy to the development of languages, traditions, culture and arts found in various regions in Indonesia. Islam rahmatan lil alamin appears in the form of development and wealth of knowledge. However, Indonesia is not a religious country, but religious values are very dominant and very animating to the people in their personal lives, family, community, nation and state. Moreover, in the context of Indonesia, a country that is predominantly Muslim and becomes the foundation of the advancement of the Islamic world in the future, the spirit of religion cannot be separated from its people. In this case Islam appears as a religion that provides solutions in exclusive life, so as to create harmony that can lead to harmony in life. So the conclusion that we can take is that Islam as a religion that has the mission of rahmatanlil 'alamin must be the basis for every individual and group of Muslims to be tolerant and act well in spreading peace to all parties wherever and whenever Keyword: Islam, rahmatan lil alamin, exclusive life

Abstract

Deixis and reference are parts of pragmatics. These issues are needed to be known by the readers. Deixis and reference were existing in written or spoken language and those materials are learnt by students in university level especially in English education department. These things are essential to be known by the readers or audience. Thus, the aims of the study were to analyse the deixis and reference types in Jakarta Post. The research methodology was a qualitative research with content analysis. The instruments were checklist and document. Those were validated by triangulation. There were 90 articles of Jakarta Post to be analysed by using a thematic analysis. The steps were familiarization, coding, generating themes, defining and naming themes  and writing up stage. The results showed that all types of dexis were found in Jakarta Post namely person, Spatial, time, discourse and social. In detail, 300 words of person deixis, 140 Spatial deixis, 90 time deixis, 30 social and 15  discouse deixis. The dominant type was person deixis. Another result was reference. The anaphoric and cataphoric reference were found in Jakarta Post, where the dominant one is anaphoric reference. In short, most of authors in Jakarta Post used person deixis and anaphoric reference to give clear information about the written text.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring qualitatively the types and the applicative principles of multimodal resources which were utilized in teaching English. Eight Indonesian English teachers having varied teaching experiences were engaged as the participants in this study. They were selected purposively in accordance with several considerations. Those were that they owned sufficient teaching experiences, and currently were graduate English students. This condition could guarantee that they owned adequate practice and familiarity to the issues, knowledge, and technical terms related to multimodality and multimodal resources so that they managed to provide the expected data. The information regarding the types of multimodal resources was obtained from questionnaire, and that about the applicative principles was explored through interview. This study found 12 types of multimodal resources utilized by the participants in that they ranged into: speech, body language or gesture, auditory elements, verbal expression, facial expression, music, writing, layout, graphics, pictures or photographs, animations or moving images, and videos. In addition this study also provided in details the data concerning with the applicative principles of multimodal resources. This study was essential because it could be one of required references for Indonesian English teachers to develop the meaningfulness of English instructions.

Abstract

In teaching writing, media is an essential aspect This research discovers students’ perception on weblogs as an educational tool in writing class in order to improving students’ writing skill. This quantitative research discussed 30 English Foreign Language (EFL) students. In obtaining the data, the thirty students of 8th semester at English Study Program of IAIN Curup were given a set of questionnaire to get students’ response on weblogs. After obtaining the data, the researcher analyzes the students response by counting its frequency and percentage. The findings of this research Indicated that the majority of students have positive perception on weblogs based on five indicators that is provided by researcher, those are: students confidence to write, writing skill improvement, Information and Communication Technology experience and knowledge, critical thinking promotion and accessible aspect. This research revealed that students give positive response to the use of weblogs as a medium in writing class. Furthermore, students also prefer to do their assignment on blog rather than write conventionally on paper. Findings of this research also advise the English teacher and lecturer to consider weblogs as medium and learning tool in school and university since it can encourage students’ writing achievement. The researcher also provide conclusion in this article.

Abstract

Indonesian faculty members in Islamic Institutes in Indonesia are expected to publish their research results in reputable international journals such as those published in English. This study aims to investigate the problems and expectation by faculty members from publishing articles in reputable international journals. A mix-method was adopted in this study questionnaire and depth interviews for gathering primary data. The sample of the study was 100 faculty members at the English Department of Islamic Institutes in Indonesia. The result shows that some problems were faced by the lecturers to publish their articles in reputable international journals:   lack of references and difficulties related to academic writing, consuming long time and high costs associated with international publishing, and no reward or for those who can succeed in reputable international journals. However, there are some possible expectations to encourage the lecturers’ international journal publication: frequently attend seminars and workshops on how to write and publish in international journals, practice writing articles collaboratively with the help of a mentor or experienced writer, always revise the article drafts following the suggestion and correction from journal editors or reviewers, and government or institution can support adequate references and costs in the order they fell confident to publish in reputable international journals.

Abstract

The goals of this study were to learn about students' perspectives on literature and blogs for teaching Islamic values to the millennial generation. This research was mixed-methods research. The subject of this study was the millennial generation at the Islamic State Institute Curup, especially students of the English Tadris Study Program. The instruments were questionnaires and interviews. This study included 30 students as participants. The findings of the poll reveal that most students have a favourable view of the use of the mind-mapping approach by utilising weblogs to improve Islamic writing. The implementation of the mind-mapping technique by using a weblog to improve Islamic writing makes students more active and interested in learning Islamic topics. Students also understand more about some Islamic topics that they read or upload to their web blogs. Students are interested in learning more about Islam by using this media. They read more topics about Islam and give their opinions about those in their Islamic literature web blog. It may be stated that a blog can be used as a form of social media and is effective and positive for teaching Islamic values to students.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out (1) ICT (Information and Communications Technology) platform used by male and female students from Islamic universities in Indonesia, (2) their perception of using ICT, and (3) their barriers to using ICT in English language learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data was collected from an online questionnaire (Google Form) from students majoring in English from seven Islamic universities in Indonesia. There were 30 male students and 30 female students from every university who participated in this research, making a total of 210 student respondents. The data were analyzed quantitatively by using the SPSS computer program. First of all, female students used more various types of ICT platforms compared to male students. Second, the female students viewed ICT use more positively than male students in language learning. And lastly, even though the females deemed ICT more optimistically compared to male students, nevertheless the females encountered more barriers in using the ICT platforms compared to the male students in this study. Again, even though male students were more skillful in ICT literacy than female students, female students constructively regarded ICT use in language learning as more beneficial to them in terms of skill, knowledge, and motivational improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to produce the development of a listening and speaking textbook for general communication based on laboratory language operating software viewed from the validation result of expert materials, expert design, media expert and students’ need This study uses, ADDIE consists of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Data collection and analysis techniques used in this research and development are data generated through interviews, observation, documentation, through informant and questionaries involving respondents analyzed descriptive qualitative. Findings of the development of English language teaching materials audio – based visuals can improve students’ language skills at a very good level. This evidenced by knowing the result of preliminary pre-test students of English department at UKI Toraja before the development of the textbook of listening and speaking for general communication with score 75,04 is enough level. After teaching materials development based on language laboratory operation software, the value of language skill of English department at UKI Toraja increased with the score 88,28 was at very good level and the average percentage of the survey results on student satisfaction in using the book development shows 80.35%. Teaching listening and speaking for general and communication based on laboratory language operating software can provide convince in teaching and learning process, thus impacting the effectiveness of learning. Thus, audio-visual materials based on audio- visual can be considered for lecturers in delivery the subject metter to make it more interesting and fun.
