Abstract

The objective of this study is to know the subjective well-being comparison between musician and non-musician. Participants of this study are musician and non-musician which is divided based on the musical activity throughout their lifespan, aged 18-40 years with the amounts of 123 participants. Musician is a person who had played a musical instrument on a regular basis for at least 10 years and joined formal musical training with the amounts of 55 participants. Non-musician is a person who had never played music, cannot read music notes, and never received formal musical training with the amounts of 68 participants. Subjective well-being was measured using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin (1985) to measure cognitive evaluation and Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) developed by Watson, Clark, and Tellegen (1988) to measure affective evaluation. The result showed that musicians have a higher level of subjective well-being significantly than non-musicians.

Abstract

Career selection is something that every individual will experience, especially those who is in emerging adulthood stage. One factor that can make the career selection uneasy is family. This is usually caused by the desire of parents to play a role in the selection of their child's career. If parents and children have a common in terms of career, then there will be no problems occur. Problems often occur when parents impose on children's career choice. This study aimed to describe the selection criteria for a career on the subject of emerging adulthood and the elderly. Subjects in this study were the pairs of father, mother, and their children aged 18-25 years that selected by purposive sampling method (N=100). Data were taken using a questionnaire. The data will be analyzed by the cluster method, frequency distributions, and cross-tabulations. The results showed 3 groups on the subjects father, mother, and child. In the entire group formed, there are criteria that are considered very important by each group. Groups of parents are very concerned with the financial criteria and professional contribution to the work, while the groups of child consider that the values and personal expectations are the very important criteria in choosing a career. There are only 10 pairs (10%) of parents and children who have common criteria in choosing a career. The results of the study are discussed further.

Abstract

Pre-marital sex phenomenon in the recent society does not only occur among adults, but it also occurs among high school and junior school students. The tendency of teenagers for being engaged in pre-marital sex is getting high when they have positive attitude toward sexual behavior. The effort to vent sexual desire among teenagers is basically affected by external factors, which is peer conformity. Conformity to peers could effectively predict teenagers' difficulties in pro-social problem and dangerous behavior such as pre-marital sex. In addition to the external factors, the internal factor could be seen from emotional intelligence, in which the teenagers are required to properly control their emotion in dealing with sexual desire. This research is aimed to examine the effect of peer conformity and emotional intelligence on pre-marital sexual behavior among teenagers. The sample in this research consists of 114 early teenagers, who aged between 11-14 years old. The researcher used Multi-linear Regression as a technique of data analysis. The result of this research shows that peer conformity and emotional intelligence could significantly affect pre-marital sexual behavior among teenagers.

Abstract

Decreasing voter turnout urge non-partisan institutions or candidates to increase voter participation in election. One of the methods is get-out-the-vote by giving mail to the voters. Gerber, Green, and Larimer (2008) show that social pressure in the form of Hawthorne effects increases voter turnout. When voters are observed, they are exerted to comply with social norms to get praise or to avoid chastisement. Moreover, emotions, such as pride and shame, also play role in the effect of social pressure on voting behavior. Panagopoulos (2010) shows that shame and pride increase voter turnout, and shame is more effective to increase voter turnout than pride. Using field experiment, researcher randomized 135 participants into three treatment groups: "Hawthorne" mailing, "Hawthorne with pride" mailing, and "Hawthorne with shame" mailing. The result was that social pressure in the form of Hawthorne effect decrease voting behavior. There was no difference among the treatment groups. Besides the inadequacy of the experiment, researchers also presume lack of voters' civil attitude as the cause of decreasing on voter turnout.

Abstract

Based on research of Beard (2008) and Ali (2013), optimism is related with flow. Academic flow can be explained by framework of Temporal Motivation Theory (TMT) which consists of expectancy, low value, and impulsiveness (Yuwanto, 2013). Based on literature studies, there is lack of research about relation between optimism and flow based on TMT framework. In this study, researcher tested TMT as a moderate variable of relationship between optimism and academic flow. Respondents in this research are 146 students class of 2013, Faculty of Psychology Universitas Surabaya. This research use Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) for measuring optimism, The Flow Inventory for Students (LIS) for measuring academic flow and Steel Procrastination Scale (SPS) for measuring TMT. The result reveals that optimism has positive relation with academic flow (r=0.187, p=0.012). Measurement of TMT as moderate variable is done by partial correlation, by controlling expectancy, low value and impulsiveness. The result show no correlation (r= -0.096, p=0.127). This study concludes that expectancy, low value, and impulsiveness are variable which can explain more about relationship between optimism and academic flow. Optimism is not enough to reach academic flow, high expectancy, low value and low impulsiveness are needed to reach high academic flow.

Abstract

Employee's motivation is important in improving the productivity of an enterprise, but often the work motivation itself is affected by many factors. One of them is commuting stress. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant effect of commuting stress to work motivation on those who work in Jakarta but live in Jabodetabek, which uses a personal vehicle like car or motorcycle. Respondents of this study were 384 workers that work in Jakarta, divided into South Jakarta, East Jakarta, West Jakarta, Central Jakarta, and North Jakarta. The sampling technique used was cluster sampling. Data analysis techniques used in this study is simple linear regression. Based on calculations, the result showed a significant negative effect of commuting stress on work motivation, which means there is a significant negative effect of commuting stress on work motivation by 12%. From the analysis of dimensions to see one is the most influential dimension affecting the motivation also showed the dimension of people behavioral on the street has the highest influence. In addition, analysis of the differences using ANOVA test also showed a significant difference in the level of commuting stress based on traveling time.

Abstract

Analyzing human potential by using fingerprint analysis makes fingerprint analysis can be an alternative method to understand human potential. Before this trend became popular, psychological assessment is the best way to assess human ability for a certain purpose, such as selection, placement test, etc. There is a significant difference between those approaches that needed to be carefully studied, especially for fingerprint analysis. The accuracy of fingerprint analysis can reach to 90% even can figure out 13 weeks old babies' potentials. Scientifically there is no support evidence for this study. In psychology, there is a theory about human development that is not only determined by genetics. Environment brings great influence in determining psychological changes in human. This study focuses on the differences of the results between two approaches, conventional psychological assessment (TKD) and fingerprint analysis. In order to make this study to be more specific, this study will only examine two types of multiple intelligence, which are verbal linguistic and mathematical logic. The results of the study show that fingerprint analysis differs from TKD in assessing verbal linguistic intelligence but not in mathematical logic intelligence. Secondly, the result of fingerprint analysis in verbal-linguistic intelligence and mathematical logic are insignificant can predict actual condition that TKD has.
