Abstract

The Jalawastu traditional community has had a culture of food security for centuries with white corn as the variety they cultivate for staple food. Today's reality shows that hybrid corn is a variety that has been commodified as the main agricultural product. People's behavior, on the other hand, shows that corn is now not the main choice as their staple food. The Jalawastu traditional community now uses rice as their main daily food rather than corn. Based on field research conducted in 2022, this article was prepared by analyzing several factors that have brought about economic and socio-cultural changes that have occurred over the last few decades in the Jalawastu Traditional Village. The influence of the market economy on agriculture in Jalawastu is allegedly strong in bringing about changes in their way of life and outlook on life that has actually been regulated through customary mechanisms. Apart from that, this article tries to raise any threats in realizing the food security and sovereignty of indigenous communities in Jalawastu. In the end, the author concludes that there are still efforts towards food sovereignty based on their traditional livelihood system even though there is a knowledge gap between generations regarding the symbolic value of corn

Abstract

Youth movement is crucial in Indonesia because since the beginning of Indonesia’s independence, the young generation has been one of the main actors. This article aims to examine the youth movement that occurred in 2020. University student groups held demonstrations against the controversial omnibus law in almost every major city in Indonesia. The protests against the job creation omnibus law, which originated as a bill, occurred across regions in Indonesia on February 12 and October 20, 2020. This youth movement to reject the omnibus law is proof that despite many societal groups rejecting the bill, the government continues with its decision due to differences in perspective. Yet, this action remains a right of young people to express their aspirations regarding the political situation in Indonesia. Differences in opinion may incite youth to demonstrate against government bills and judgments

Abstract

The author focuses on the kinship system in Batak Toba culture, known as Dalihan Na Tolu. This kinship system is interpreted as identity and even serves as a guiding principle in the traditional cultural activities of Batak Toba. Dalihan Na Tolu consists of three hearthstones used for cooking. These three hearthstones are depicted as the kinship system in Batak Toba culture. The three hearthstones are Hula-hula, Dongan Tubu, and Boru. In Batak Toba culture, each person will assume one of the roles among these three elements. For the Batak people, Dalihan Na Tolu plays an important role and serves as the heart of every ceremony and relationship with others. Meanwhile, according to Armada Riyanto, self-giving transcends the relationship between "I" and "others." The research method employed by the author is a literature review involving critical analysis of various Batak culture books and previous research studies that discuss Dalihan Na Tolu. The methodology used is Armada Riyanto's relationality. This study finds that Dalihan Na Tolu is a guiding principle for Batak people in their relationships with others. Abstract

Liminality is a concept referring to the transitional phase in which individuals or groups experience a suspension ofhierarchy and social structure, fostering a sense of togetherness, collective solidarity, and equality. The andherenat ritual on Gili Iyang Island, Sumenep Regency, is a tradition of the migrant Buton-Binongko community aimed at invoking rain and maintaining soil fertility. This study explores and analyzes liminality in the andherenat ritual and its sociocultural implications for the assimilative community. A qualitative method and case study strategy were used, focusing on the cultural activities of the andherenat ritual. The research findings reveal that the andherenat ritual involves three phases of liminality: separation, liminality, and incorporation. The separation phase is marked by theperformance of tawassul, yasin, tahlil, and praise, separating participants from everyday life. The liminality phase is a transitional period where participants undergo spiritual transformation through activities such as the topak loberprocession and circling the island. The incorporation phase reintegrates participants into society with renewed identities, highlighted by a communal feast.
