Abstract

Liminality is a concept referring to the transitional phase in which individuals or groups experience a suspension ofhierarchy and social structure, fostering a sense of togetherness, collective solidarity, and equality. The andherenat ritual on Gili Iyang Island, Sumenep Regency, is a tradition of the migrant Buton-Binongko community aimed at invoking rain and maintaining soil fertility. This study explores and analyzes liminality in the andherenat ritual and its sociocultural implications for the assimilative community. A qualitative method and case study strategy were used, focusing on the cultural activities of the andherenat ritual. The research findings reveal that the andherenat ritual involves three phases of liminality: separation, liminality, and incorporation. The separation phase is marked by theperformance of tawassul, yasin, tahlil, and praise, separating participants from everyday life. The liminality phase is a transitional period where participants undergo spiritual transformation through activities such as the topak loberprocession and circling the island. The incorporation phase reintegrates participants into society with renewed identities, highlighted by a communal feast.

Nowadays, environmental issues deserve everyone's attention. People can actually improve their surrounding environment to be healthier and more comfortable, started with their own houses. This idea realizes an ecology village named 'Batu Into Green', located in Pattimura V, Temas, in the City of Batu, Indonesia. Originally, this village was a slum, but with the initiation of the local village head and with the increase of local public awareness for a healthier environment, the locals improved the ecology of their village. 'Batu Into Green' applies to the concept of environmental friendly village. Thus, an analysis was carried out to examine the level of sustainability of this ecology village. Abstract

Abstract

The Malang Creative Center (MCC) construction is a step taken by the Malang City government to support the flow of modernization and as a forum for Malang residents to develop their creativity. The MCC display concept is planned by combining the shape of the temple and the unique cultural background of Malangan. However, during the development process, many changes were different from the initial concept. All these things make this building interesting to study critically. Therefore, this study aims to critically identify these changes in the idea as well as rectify the perceptions that have developed. Descriptive analysis was carried out through direct observation of objects by describing real conditions and explanatory verification of the results of these observations with visitors' views via a questionnaire. The analysis results show that the public's perception of the visual MCC has a good level of compatibility with the concept and function of the building, although some aspects still require attention regarding the visitor’s safety and comfort.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the logical factors behind the cultural values of traditional house. Through an ethnomathematical study approach, this study reconstructs various patterns of Bugis house forms using photo documentation belonging to the KITLV institution published around 1880-1953. The Bugis vernacular house forms is often described as the embodiment of the basic knowledge of non-physical (intangible) in the form of culture, belief, and the principles of community life. However, when viewed from the building process, rules, and sizes, to the development of its form and typology, a Bugis house cannot be seen as a mere embodiment of the cosmological concept, but also an embodiment of form that implements scientific knowledge. This is indicated by the various patterns of Bugis' traditional houses formed from an ethnomodelling point of view as a result of humans knowledge to the context and the environment in which they inhabit.

Abstract

Indonesia's cultural diversity provides a unique backdrop for understanding the dynamics of cultural assimilation, especially on Gili Iyang Island in Sumenep, Madura, where migration has shaped social and architectural aspects. This study explores the influence of cultural adaptation on architecture among the Bugis-Makassar, Buton-Binongko, and Sumenep-Madura communities on Gili Iyang Island. Utilizing a case study method, this research focuses on how these maritime-oriented communities adjust and modify architectural aspects in response to cultural interactions. The findings indicate that the assimilation affecting the architecture of Gili Iyang Island includes: (1) spatial organization and division from east to west and north to south, reflecting a balance between gender aspects and spiritual symbolism; (2) color concepts based on natural elements such as brown (earth), green (sea), blue (sky), and red-orange (fire); (3) ornaments inspired by the surrounding environment including plants, animals, and repetitive geometric patterns; (4) courtyards serving as the focal points for orientation and transition between buildings; (5) buildings that are closely spaced

Abstract

The Rupiah banknotes are visual cultural objects with the ability to present visual narratives that evoke collective memory. The Rupiah banknotes issued between 2000 and 2005 maintain a consistent design pattern across all denominations, featuring national heroes on the front and local identities on the back, which represent the rich history and culture of Indonesia. Research on visual culture focusing on collective memory in the context of architectural communication is still limited. This study employs architectural criticism methods to examine and critique the role of visualizing local identity in revealing collective memory related to historical context and its implications for architectural communication, grounded in the concept of visual culture. The visualization of local identity elements depicted on the Rupiah banknotes from 2000 to 2005 in each denomination serves as an architectural representation that can shape communication in the form of collective memory, narrating cultural identity and leading to architectural context. The results of this study, through the analysis of architectural object representation, can enrich understanding related to visual culture and its connection to the presence of collective memory concerning local identity.
