Abstract

This article examines the theology of culture from the perspective of Lesslie Newbigin and Johan Herman Bavinck. It is argued that the Trinitarian framework is appropriate for reading and analyzing culture. By comparing these two figures, the author shows the application of the Trinitarian framework in reading and analyzing the culture in Newbigin and Bavinck's thinking. From this study, the author shows the diversity of the theology of cultures from the Reformed theological tradition, which can be applied mainly in the life of a pluralistic society.

Abstract

Augustine of Hippo is a church father, and a major philosopher figure who influenced Christian thoughts in Western Europe. It is interesting to noted that Augustine had not only influenced the religious circle of Christianity, but he has also influenced various other fields. The works of Augustine can be depicted as a premodern form of existentialism. Neo-Platonism and Augustine’s original writings provide an explanation of the human experience and its mysterious pursuit of God, life’s meaning and ethics. This article attempts to explore the ethical thoughts of Augustine in regards of human ethics through the concepts of Uti and Frui. In the first section, this article provides the ground significance of Augustinian ethical thoughts and its relevance to criticise modern ethics. Second, a thorough background explanation of Neoplatonism and the concept of Uti and Frui will be provided to demonstrate human beings as ontologically different from other objects of things. Lastly, the author attempts to provide several critical thought of Augustinian thought and its relevance.

Abstract

This article explains the relationship between Greco-Roman Stoicism and Stoicism in the Christian tradition by examining the primary and secondary sources of Cicero, Epictetus, Augustine, and Calvin. The theological-philosophical analysis will examine how theology, worldview, and the Gospel in “Christian Stoicism” as found in Calvin’s ethics have made it distinctive from Greco-Roman Stoicism. Superficially, there are similarities between the teachings of Calvin’s ethics and the ethics of Greco-Roman Stoicism. However, the two have sharp differences at their roots, namely at the theological, worldview, and eschatological levels. The ethical advice of these two groups may be similar in several respects, but they are rooted in radically different reasons.

Abstract

This article is a study of the theology of work in the thought of John Calvin. By drawing and analyzing Calvin’s view onwork as a vocation and a service, I argue that there is tension but also a close relationship between work as a vocation and as a service in Calvin’s thought. For Calvin, aside from being a vocation, work is also a means for humans to serve others in love and justice since work also fulfills one another’s need for the common good. This study’s results indicate a close relationship between vocation and service in work, so it is not appropriate to ignore one and emphasize the other, in this case ignoring service and emphasizing vocation in work. In fact, by embracing work as both a vocation and a ministry intheir work, Christian workers can genuinely glorify God by humanizing people.

Abstract

Christianity is only a religion if the dichotomy of secular and spiritual thoughts is the base of it. It has nothing to do with the objective truth we believe. Christianity is only a chosen belief or simply a desire to fulfil an inner desire. However, this is very difficult or even impossible in practice. How can a person make such a sharp division between the spiritual and the secular within himself? How can someone's actions and thoughts separate from his religion or belief in the public sphere?

Abstract

This article discusses the relevance of the Baumanian-Levinasian notion of religion within a concrete analysis of refugee reception. As various classical approaches and definitions of religion have described it as a social phenomenon of grouping or an ideological tool for maintaining social order, it is necessary to provide a relevant approach to discussing religion as an ethical drive to build social inclusion through transmigration. The previous 2015 Western Europe immigration crisis due to the Syrian civil war has invited xenophobic responses towards immigrants, inevitably resulting in the socio-political impact of Brexit in 2020. Demonstrations of refugee resettlement driven by religious causes have provided a practical and ethical critique of secular liberalism. Furthermore, this article also reflects on the church's role as a refuge for refugees and marginalised groups in Indonesia. In conclusion, the Baumanian-Levinasian thought on religion and ethics remains relevant to both Western and Indonesian contexts in fostering inclusion, particularly during political turmoil.

Abstract

This study examines the latest developments in Islamic activism in Indonesia's high schools. Using the theoretical framework of Islamic social movements from Wictorowitz, the main research questions include: (1) what government policies influence Islamic activism? (2) How is the Islamic activism network built? (3) what narratives do they develop? This study uses case studies conducted at SMAN 51 Jakarta and SMAN 31 Jakarta. By conducting interviews with 15 sources, observations, and relevant literature studies, this study shows the influence of educational policies, especially the 2013 curriculum, on forming Islamic activism in high schools. Furthermore, this activism creates rohis (rohani Islam) networks that connect students with the world outside school. Within this network, a narrative framing about piety continues to change according to broader constellations. This study recommends that Islamic activism in secondary schools be understood comprehensively as a social movement, more than just part of religious conservatism, to handle it more appropriately.

Abstract

In the aftermath of the tumultuous events 1998, the Sarang Subdistrict in Indonesia experienced profound socio-cultural transformations. This study examines the lasting impacts of that unforgettable year on Sarang's Christian Chinese community, known for its strict religious culture, including numerous pesantrens and influential figures who shape its cultural identity. The study uses qualitative methods to conduct in-depth interviews with six Chinese individuals who have chosen Sarang as their residence. The goal is to explore the significant links between the 1998 tragedy and the transformation of the Chinese ethnic landscape. The study also investigates whether the psycho-cultural phenomenon of identity reconstruction and assimilation, as described by participants, plays a role in these changes. Thus, it offers insights into broader societal dynamics within the country.
