Abstract

Religion, as an ethical and spiritual source in broader contexts, is no longer underestimated by scholars and public policy makers. It has been demonstrated that desecularization constitutes a process of renewing sacred morality in a secular age. Apart from spiritual or local religious believers in Indonesia whose developments are shaped by the state and world religious believers, a large part of people in the world continue seeking spiritualities even without formal religions.

Abstract

This article explains the gospel of Jesus Christ, which plays a crucial role in the “mental revolution”. This goal is achieved through analysing power relations, viewed from three contexts: first-century Judea, Dutch colonial Indonesia, and present-day Indonesia. The analysis focuses on the power dynamics between “the little people”, “the priayi”, and their Dutch masters, followed by a comparison to the history of oppression in first-century Judean society and the work of Jesus Nazareth and his disciples in producing a “mental revolution from below”. This research hopefully will guide how the gospel lived by Christians can orient their struggles as Indonesian citizens from the bottom of their hearts as citizens of the “kingdom of God”. The article tries to show how the Gospels convey a picture of Jesus Christ. He presented new habituation in his interactions with power and the marginalised in the corrupted first-century Judean society. This paper also explains how these findings can help Christians to work as modern Indonesian citizens.

Abstract

The spacious room provided by the Election Law for popular participation was utilized by Christians in Malang Greater Area in the 2014 and 2019 elections through a collaborative network between individual Christians called Marindo. This study intends to describe the dynamics of such involvement in the typical Indonesian political atmosphere. The thesis it wants to raise is that starting from certain conditions they face in this region, these Christians have adopted a strategy that gives them freedom of movement to mobilize their electoral power. The special contribution of this research to the current findings is the use of non-institutional strategies with all their problems amid Indonesia's electoral democracy climate. On a more theoretical level, it complements other findings about the strategies of minority groups to take part in the democratic process. This research uses a qualitative approach with case study methods and an interpretive lens of theories about the involvement of minority groups in the democratic process.

Abstract

Discipline for children in the family has become one of the most difficult problems and challenges for parents throughout the ages. The reality of two extremes of discipline, violence and neglect, becomes an unavoidable fact and keep continues in different contexts. In particular, since the Reformation period, efforts to overcome this problem have been continuously pursued by theologians who wanted a biblical and balanced discipline. This article seeks to find the best way to deal with this problem by re-examining the work of John Calvin and William Gouge. According to his context, Calvin has given a legacy which Gouge later developed. Through a literature study with a biblical-historical approach, this study concludes that there is continuity and discontinuity between Calvin and Gouge's teaching on child discipline. This analysis has significance for today's Christian families in evaluating and resuming efforts to bring a balanced child discipline in the family.

Abstract

The emergence of “public religion” in various countries, including Indonesia, shows that religion and spirituality have not disappeared from the public sphere. The articles in this edition demonstrated a common thread that religion and spirituality are still seen and believed to be essential entities by (some) people. They can serve as sources of inspiration and positive activities in smaller scopes (such as family and village) and those in the broader community (such as nation and state). Religion and spirituality have also been shown to have meaningful and valuable contributions to their adherents’ social and individual lives. Thus, Nietzsche’s predictions about the “death of God” (read: religion and spiritual systems), for the time being, have not been proven in Indonesia.

Abstract

Neoliberalism becomes a problem in the socio-political reality in Indonesia because it changes the role of lawand government as market servants. As a result, government policies often put business interests above public interests. However, the attitude of Christianity towards neoliberalism is still ambiguous because some consider it to be in harmony with Christianity, while the rest argue otherwise. Therefore, this study aims to analyze neoliberalism to resolve this ambiguity. To fulfill the purpose of the study, the authors collected data using the literature study method. Walter Lippmann's work became the focus of investigation because his ideas were pioneers of the development of neoliberalism. Meanwhile, John Calvin's theology is used as a lens to criticize neoliberalism. The results show that neoliberalism aims to organize the orientation of law and government to align themselves withmarket interests. If harmony has been achieved, Lippmann believes individual freedom is automatically realized. After comparing it with Calvin's theology, the author argues that neoliberalism contradicts Christianity becauseit has reduced human nature to a mere economic instrument. Thus, the attitude of Christianity is to monitorneoliberalism with criticism to anticipate its negative impact on society.
