Abstract

This article describes and analyses a complex relationship between Islamisation, peacebuilding, and interfaith dialogue in Papua. Before the presence of transnational Islam, the relationship between Muslims and Christians was in harmony, and they lived peacefully. However, such radical transnational Islamic groups have created tensions and conflict between these two religions as well as intra-religious frictions among Islamic groups. Furthermore, tensions among different religions have provided another nuance to the long-running separatism-flavoured conflict in Papua. This paper will describe the presence of transnational groups that promote Islamism and how the religious leaders in Papua, through Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama or FKUB [the Religious Forum for Tolerance], reduce religious conflicts by making Deklarasi Papua Tanah Damai [Papua Land of Peace Declaration]. Furthermore, it explicates the framework of interfaith dialogue and how it is practised to maintain communal harmony in Papua. However, the interfaith dialogue is still used traditionally in Papua and has yet to resolve the root cause of the existing religious conflicts.  Keywords: Islamisation, Communal Conflict, Transnational Islam, Peacebuilding, Interfaith Dialogue

Abstract

In the face of religious tensions within the Indonesian context, the East Java Christian Church grapples with the imperative question: "How can the church effectively engage with a multifaith world amidst religious and social tensions?" In response to the question, I contend that the church can build its multifaith awareness by adopting a model derived from Javanese tradition, namely jagongan and patuwen, Jagongan embodies communal characteristics, while patuwen signifies personal and private qualities. These Javanese traditions mirror the twofold movement of Jesus—exitus a Deo and exitus a se—reflecting both exit from Father and of Himself leading to a return and entry to the Divine. The church can engage jagongan as an invitation for people to enter and gather in public space and employ patuwen to reach out and exit from the church space to embrace people's private space. I will demonstrate the practical implementation of jagongan and patuwen as spaces for multifaith learning and social justice awareness within the church, presented under the banner of the Festival of Faith. In conclusion, jagongan and patuwen emerge as powerful models for bridging and enriching the church's multifaith awareness, fostering greater understanding, inclusivity, and social justice in the diverse landscape of faith.

Abstract

The Catholic Church is committed to caring for the poor in its efforts to be present in society. In parish life, this is done by managing social funds, including the Dana Papa Miskin (Danpamis). In the Archdiocese of Semarang context, Danpamis is an opportunity to support the poor, the excluded, and those whose dignity is stolen. Even when started with good intentions, carrying out this mission is often ineffective. This study, conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, examines the process of managing Danpamis as an effort by the Church to be more present with the poor. This study focuses on the role of the parish priest as a starting point for understanding the meaning of the Church's presence as a sign of the presence of God, the Savior of the poor. From this study, it becomes clear that the priest's representative role is determined by his personal and spiritual experience in the face of poverty and his awareness of his vocation and mission in the middle of the poor.

Abstract

Thousands of kilometres travelled by 32 thudong monks from Thailand to Indonesia was not only a spiritual moment for the participants but also a historical event in Indonesian interfaith relations. Given the abundance of enthusiasm, this article aims to explain the purity of interfaith harmony created by local communities and Thai monks, who also contributed to promoting interfaith dialogue discourse among grassroots communities. By delving into the internet, a netnography approach is used to get a deeper and broader understanding of the events by comparing one digital document with another. In the interfaith encounters along the pilgrimage highway, both parties exhibited reciprocal behaviours of shared feelings and kindness that encouraged them to complete the ritual mission together. They were able to dismantle the religious barriers that frequently impede harmonious interfaith relations as a result of warm acceptance, hospitable interactions, and engaging dialogue onsite and via social media.

Abstract

This article aims to capture the dynamics of Borobudur folk art, which experiences ups and downs. Some people believe that the decline of folk art initially impacted the emergence of television, one of the modernist instruments. By using that logic, folk art ideally is running to its extinction. However, in recent years, the Borobudur community has successfully revitalised the folk art that has been dead for decades, such as ketoprak. On the other hand, the Borobudur community has unique religious characteristics; They are plural in terms of religion but hold the same Javanese values. To understand the dynamics, this article uses Walter Benjamin's theory of religious aesthetics as an analytical tool. Specifically, this article will answer two research questions: How does religiosity influence folk art revitalization, and what is the social function of folk art for the Borobudur Community? This qualitative research was conducted in Borobudur District in 2022 using an ethnographic approach.

Abstract

The 1999 conflict in Maluku left scars that lasted 20 years after the conflict. This phenomenon is directly reflected in the narratives of post-conflict society, which are still prevalent in daily conversations. During their 20 years of surviving in Ambon as refugees, the Kayeli community had various experiences forms (violent and peaceful ones). The struggle of the Kayeli refugees reflects the damages created by conflict in communal relations a year after the war's end. This condition has not been sufficiently discussed in studies of post-conflict society. This paper aims to describe the struggle of the refugee community as a vulnerable group of people living with narratives of violence in the post-conflict in Ambon. This paper is based on in-depth interviews with 8 informants from the Kayeli refugee community to collect the data in 2023. The results reveal that the conflict experiences depicted in this group illustrate discrimination and struggle in communal relations in new areas where they were resettled from their war-torn villages. This paper describes the refugees' responses to conflict narratives based on their Christian beliefs. This is how the refugee community continues to live their lives by coping with the discriminating narratives in their new community.

Abstract

The book La grâce du végétal presents unique and fresh theological reasoning regarding the “divine economy”. The world of plants or vegetation is a blessing not only for themselves but also for other creatures, including humans, in relationships. In the ecological crisis, it is increasingly recognized that plants are "providers of life". Plants perceive, feel, and communicate… beyond their seemingly mute appearance. We live with trees in a relationship marked by resonance and dependence. Schaefer offers a concept of "significative reciprocity", namely a reciprocal relationship that is important for both sides because humans also preserve themselves when humans look after trees. If this logic is continued, it might lead to a big conclusion: everything is a blessing for others. Perhaps there was an element of coincidence when I saw the book displayed on an obvious shelf. However, beyond this interest and element of coincidence, perhaps this topic also represents a movement of thinking in the broader field of theology and religious thought, which is not only increasingly inclusive but also "universal", in the sense of embracing the universe. This idea clearly expands the breadth of the inclusive movement of theology and religious thought, which has penetrated geographical and regional boundaries (theology without borders) or denominational boundaries (ecumenical) and religious boundaries (interreligious).

Abstract

Faith in the Trinity God as the foundation of Christian faith is not easily understood by most believers. It is even less easy to understand the faith in the Trinity according to a particular cultural context. This research seeks to explain the understanding of the Trinity that is interpreted in accordance with the Javanese cultural context. This research uses a literature study method with a contextual theology and pastoral circle approach. The writer takes the character of Semar in Javanese culture to deepen it in comparison with Jesus from the perspective of comparative theology. Specifically, the writer wants to look at the concept of self-emptying in Semar and also in Jesus Christ. To arrive at this research, the writer uses Charles Peirce's semiotic theory and also the thoughts of Hans Urs von Balthasar regarding the doctrine of the Trinity. The result of this research reveals the similarities between the self-emptying of Semar and Jesus Christ. However, there are clear and distinct differences between the self-emptying of Semar and that of Jesus Christ.
