Abstract

Background: Flexibility is the ability of a tissue or muscle to experience maximum lengthening so that the body can move with the full range of motion of the joints, without the onset of pain. Decreased hamstring flexibility can be caused by several factors, such as shortening of the hamstring muscles, acute or chronic injury to the hamstring muscles, decreased hip joint, excessive activity, and improper training patterns. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study using a two-group pre-test and post-test design. The aim was to determine the different effects of the Contract Relax intervention compared to the Hold Relax on increasing the flexibility of the Hamstring muscles. This research was conducted at SMA N 18 Makassar, with the sample being students who fit the inclusion criteria. The number of samples was 20 people who were randomly divided into 2 groups, namely the treatment group I who were given Contract Relax as many as 10 people and the treatment group II who were given Hold Relax as many as 10 people. Results: Based on the analysis of the paired sample t-test in the treatment group I obtained a p value <0.05 with pre and post test results of 0.00 for the Sit and Reach value which means that Contract Relax can result in a significant increase in Hamstring muscle flexibility. While the treatment group II also obtained a p value <0.05 with pre and post test results of 0.00 for the Sit and Reach value which means that holding Relax can result in a significant increase in Hamstring muscle flexibility. Then based on the Independent sample t-test, a p value <0.05 was obtained for the Sit and Reach value, which means that Hold Relax is significantly more effective than Contract Relax for increasing hamstring muscle flexibility. Conclusion : Hold Relax is better than Contract Relax in increasing the flexibility of the Hamstring musclesKeywords: Contract Relax, Hold Relax, Hamstring Flexibility

Abstract

Background : Tennis Elbow is a complaint of pain in the forearm which usually radiates to the dorsum of the hand due to inflammation or non-specific degeneration of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle in the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. It is diagnosed clinically by the sensation of pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle of the humerus which is aggravated during dorsiflexion of the restricted wrist. Methods: This type of research is a quasi experiment with a ramdomized pre test-post test two group design. This study consisted of 2 sample groups, namely treatment group 1 which was given Eccentric Exercise and Ultrasound interventions and treatment group 2 which was given Passive Streaching and Ultrasound interventions. The sample of this study were students of the Makassar Health Ministry Polytechnic majoring in Physiotherapy who suffered from Type II Tennis Elbow with inclusion and exclusion criteria in sampling. Results: the mean value of tennis elbow in the First Treatment group (Ultrasound and Eccentric Exercise) is the value of P = 0.012 <0.05 where the pre test is 6.650 ± 1.046 and the post test is 4.150 ± 0.594 with an average difference of 4.49 ± 1.035 which means there is an increase the average Tennis Elbow is 4.49 after intervention (Ultrasound and Eccentric Exercise). The mean value of the Tennis Elbow pre test in the Treatment Two group (Ultrasound and Passive Stretching) had a value of P = 0.022 <0.05 and the pre test value was 4.180 ± 0.925 and the post test was 2.490 ± 1.080 with an average difference of 2.69 ± 1.178, which means that there was an average increase in Tennis Elbow by 2.69 after the intervention (Ultrasound and Passive Stretching). The results of the Mann-Withney test were p <0.05 which means that there was a significant difference in the mean between the first treatment group (Ultrasound and Eccentric Exercise) and the second treatment group (Ultrasound and Passive Stretching). This shows that Ultrasound and Eccentric Exercise are significantly more effective than Ultrasound and Passive Stretching in reducing VAS in Type II Tennis Elbow sufferers. Conclusion: Ultrasound Intervention and Eccentric Exercise have a more significant effect than Ultrasound and Passive Stretching on Reducing Pain in Patients with Type II Tennis Elbow. Keywords: Ultrasound, Eccentric Exercise, Passive Streaching, Type II Tennis Elbow.

Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative joint disease that causes cartilage damage in the knee joint which is characterized by loss and erosion of the knee joint cartilage and the growth of osteophytes on the edges of the knee joint, causing stiffness, pain and impaired movement. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test design with two groups aiming to determine the difference in the effect of translation oscillations and theraband exercise with translation oscillations and hold relax on pain reduction and ROM improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This research was conducted at the Faisal Islamic Hospital in Makassar, with a sample of knee osteoarthritis patients who fit the inclusion criteria. The number of samples was 14 people who were randomly divided into 2 groups, namely 1 group that was given translation oscillation and theraband exercise as many as 7 people and group 2 that was given translation oscillation and hold relax as many as 7 people. Measuring instruments used are VAS and Goniometer. Results: Analysis of the paired sample t test in the treatment and control groups obtained a value of p = 0.000 <0.05 for the actuality of pain and ROM, which means that there was a significant effect in the treatment and control groups on reducing pain and increasing ROM. The results of the independent sample t test for actuality of pain obtained a value of p = 0.053 > 0.05 and for ROM obtained a value of p = 0.365 > 0.05 which means that there was no significant difference between the two sample groups. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the administration of translational oscillations and theraband exercise has no more effect than translational oscillations and hold relax on reducing pain and increasing ROM in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Keywords: Translational Oscillation, Theraband Exercise, Hold Relax, Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic disease characterized by productive cough, dyspnea and airway obstruction even though this disease is chronic and is a combination of emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma, but in certain circumstances worsening of respiratory function occurs . In some circumstances, the worsening of COPD can lead to respiratory failure. Methods: This research is a pre-experimental study with a one group pretest-posttest research design using a purposive sampling technique, which aims to determine an increase in thoracic expansion in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with a population of 16 people, a total sample of 15 people is obtained based on the sample size formula and meeting the inclusion criteria, each sample was given chest mobilization treatment. Results: The results showed that the average value of thoracic expansion before treatment was at the axilla point = 0.53, costa point 4-5 = 2.33 and point proc. xyphoideus = 4.47 using a measuring instrument, namely a measuring tape. Statistical results using the Wilcoxon test show that the p value for thoracic expansion at each point is p = 0.000 which is less than α = 0.05 (p<α) which means the working hypothesis is accepted. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is by giving chest mobilization for 8 treatments can produce a significant effect on changes in thoracic expansion in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, in other words giving chest mobilization is more effective in increasing thoracic expansion in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Keywords: Chest mobilization, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, thoracic expansion
