Indonesian Journal of Arabic Studies (e-ISSN : 2686-1542 ) is a journal that publishes original papers researching or documenting issues in Arabic Studies. It is published by Departement of Arabic Language and Literature, IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon. The journal has regularly published twice a year in May and November. We accept original research, conceptual, and best practice articles related to Arabic Studies. Editors welcome scholars, researchers and practitioners of Arabic Studies around the world to submit scholarly articles to be published through this journal. All articles will be reviewed by experts before accepted for publication. Each author is solely responsible for the content of published articles.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the characteristics of the great Indonesian literary work Haji Abdul Malik bin Karim Amrullah (Hamka) in his novel ‘Keadilan Ilahi’ (Divine Justice), this work is one of the literary heritage of the old Indonesian poet that is rarely found by readers of Indonesian literary works in libraries throughout the Malay Islands, especially in Indonesia. Specifically, this research attempts to explain the characteristics of Hamka's literature, which is represented in narrative language and in a very subtle and directed language style when raising the theme of his novel. The importance of this research is because of the knowledge of the unique techniques possessed by Hamka in writing this novel, this work is no less flashy and prestige than the work of other novels such as ‘Tengelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck’ (Sinking of the Van der Wijck) and ‘Di bawah Naungan Ka’bah’ (Under the Protection of the Kaaba). This study uses literary analysis methods that examine narrative techniques, dialogue, internal dialogue, retrieval, message delivery, and monologues used by Hamka in his novels. The second is to study Hamka's techniques in the novel by presenting parts of novel texts in Indonesian and providing the proposed Arabic translation.

Abstract

The process of translating is a very complex activity, the translator is not a writer, but only a messenger or mediator bridges the text writer and reader in different languages. This paper presents Al-Jahiz's critique of the results of the translation, because the advantages of a language structure can only be enjoyed by the language owner, like Arabic poetry when translated poet and its form is neglected and its beauty and wonder are lost. Proses penerjemahan suatu aktifitas yang sangat komplek, penerjemah bukanlah penulis, namun hanya seorang penyampai pesan atau mediator yang menjembatani penulis teks dan pembacanya dalam bahasa yang berbeda. Tulisan ini memaparkan kritik Al-Jahiz terhadap hasil penerjemahan, karena kelebihan suatu susunan bahasa hanya dapat dinikmati pemilik bahasa, seperti halnya syair bahasa Arab ketika  diterjemahkan nazam dan bentuknya terabaikan serta keindahan dan ketakjubannya hilang.

Abstract

This research aims to describe Ibn Khaldun's ideas on the concepts of language that he wrote in his great work 'al-muqaddima'. A review of this ideas using Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutic approach. This paper is descriptive, analytical, interpretative and comparative-synthesis. Interpretation is used to provide an explanation of the thought of Ibn Khaldun based on the understanding of researcher in interpreting the texts of al-muqodimah. The comparative-synthesis aspect is carried out to compare Ibn Khaldun's linguistic ideas with modern linguistic concepts, with the aim of finding a common point of ideas between Ibn Khaldun and modern linguistic theories. Some concepts of Ibn Khaldun language that apparently have similarities with modern language ideas are: lughah, ifādah al-kalām, fi'l lisāni, malakah, al-qoshd, fitrah, etc.

Abstract

There is a phrase in the Qur’an called ‘ghairu ulil irbah’ which represents individuals who tend to have a non-hetero sexual orientation. This phrase is also mentioned in Surah An-Nur verse 31, so the researcher review this phrase because some people misunderstand with it. Therefore, this study aims to explain the meaning of ghairu ulil irbah, the semantic implication of ghairu ulil irbah in sexual orientation point of view and the further definition of ghairu ulil irbah based on the context of Surah An-Nur verse 31.There are three steps in this language research: providing data, data analysis; the data will be analyzed by using identity and contextual method, and presentation of analysis result in descriptive report.The result shows that the underlying meaning of the word irbah from the phrase ghairu ulil irbah is “necessity”. In particular cases, the word irbah has narrowed meaning but do not change the meaning itself. Thus, it can be said that the relational meaning of irbah is sexual needs of someone’s sexual desire, specifically, ghairu ulil irbah stays in the context of ‘sexual’. It was different from people’s interpretations several years ago said that ghairu ulil irbah dealt with people who lose their minds. It is interesting to note that this phrase focuses on the various sexual orientations because this term correlates with expressing a sexual desire to the sexual object.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Arabic teaching methods at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia, which uses the book Al-Arabiyyatu bayna Yadaik in the perspective of Cross Cultural Understanding which is assumed to reduce stagnation in conversation and respect for other people's culture by selecting textbooks used as handbooks . Arabic is a reflection of Arabic culture. Three approaches in teaching Arabic are through language, psychology, and sociolinguistics (culture). The teaching of Arabic culture can be applied through listening, conversation, reading and writing material. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative analysis. The conclusion of this article is that the book Al-Arabiyyatu bayna Yadaik displays four competencies, namely listening skills (maharatu al-istima'), reading (maharatu al-qira'ah), speaking (maharatu al-kalam), and writing (maharatu al-kitabah), in addition to additional knowledge in the form of language about Arabic and Islamic culture that can be used as an alternative to cross-cultural Arabic-based learning.

Abstract

Qasidah, salah satu karya sastra Arab yang tidak lepas dari perpaduan keindahan kata dan makna yang terkandung di dalamnya. Qasidah Burdah Karya Imam Al-Busiri menjadi objek material penelitian ini karena ragamnya keindahan syair dan bait yang disajikan. Pendekatan yang digunakan pada analisis ini adalah Jinas dalam ilmu balagah, hal ini karena Jinas salah satu teori untuk menganalisa keindahan kata dan makna yang terkandung dalam syair. Sedangkan metode analisis pada penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis isi. Dalam kajian linguistik umum, Jinas dipadankan dengan istilah homonimi, homofon, dan homograf. Hasil analisis mengungkap keragaman Jinas pada Qasidah Burdah Karya Imam Al-Busiri berjumlah 172 jenis.Qasidah, one of Arabic literary works that cannot be separated from the combination of the beauty of words and meanings contained therein. Qasidah Burdah Imam Al-Busiri work becomes the object of this research material for manifold beauty of poems and couplets presented. The approach used in this analysis is Jinas in balagah science, this is because Jinas is one of the theories for analyzing the beauty of words and meanings contained in poetry. While the method of analysis in this study uses the content analysis method. In general linguistic studies, Jinas is paired with the terms homonymy, homophony, and homograph. The analysis revealed the diversity of Jinas in Imam Al-Busiri's Qasidah Burdah by 172 species.
