Abstract

This article discusses the process of landscape change and its impact in Banjarbaru City from 1999 to 2011. Since officially becoming a municipality in 1999, the Banjarbaru City Government has enacted a range of urban planning policies that have successfully attracted investment in the industrial and housing sectors. This influences the growth of the population and the landscape condition of Banjarbaru City. This article applied historical methods using sources such as newspapers, maps, reports from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and government policy letters. This research indicates that Regional Regulation Number 05 of 2001, which focuses on urban spatial planning, garnered positive interest from investors in the industrial and housing sectors during 2003 and 2004. In addition, Rudy Ariffin’s plan to relocate the capital of South Kalimantan Province was included in the 2006-2010 Regional Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMD). These initiatives resulted in significant changes to the landscape, transforming green spaces into residential and industrial areas. Local communities and mining companies further intensified these alterations through traditional and modern diamond mining activities. The ongoing process of landscape transformation paralleled a population increase from 2008 to 2011, with green land transformed into urbanised areas from 2005-2011. This article seeks to bridge a gap in environmental historiography in Indonesia by examining the phenomenon of landscape change as a significant event in environmental history

Abstract

This article discusses the social and economic conditions of Bantul Regency during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The study employed colonial reports, contemporary national and international newspapers, and secondary and tertiary sources. The researchers discovered that during this period, Bantul regency people faced numerous challenges due to the economic decline caused by this extraordinary economic disruption. The economic depression had varying impacts on different groups within Bantul society. Europeans who controlled the plantation and sugar industry, for example, experienced more significant economic hardship than indigenous society, which relied primarily on subsistence agriculture. Such different impacts led to a range of responses and strategies among the various groups as they sought to cope with the economic challenges. In response, the local government took multiple measures to support the people in overcoming the effects of the economic Depression. By examining the Bantul case, this study offers a fresh analysis of how the Economic Depression of the 1930s affected the local economy and population that previously had long been dependent on the sugar industry.

Abstract

This research explains the origins of the tradition of eating baidang in Rantau Singingi and details the procedures involved in the practice. It also offers an interpretation of the eating baidang tradition, discussing its importance in adapting to changing times, ensuring that the roots of this tradition remain intact and do not diminish over time. Using ethnographic methods, the study adopts a holistic and integrated approach, providing in depth descriptions and qualitative analysis to capture the community’s perspective that upholds this tradition. The findings indicate that eating baidang is a long-standing tradition continually practised by the Singingi community during badua (celebration) events. Serving food in this context is a way to extend hospitality to guests, underscoring the importance of respecting customs and empowering customary apparatus. The tradition of eating baidang follows specific rules regarding the order of serving the food, which trains discipline and reminds oneself of the stages that must be taken to achieve something. As time has changed, the practice of eating baidang has evolved; many now combine it with buffet-style dishes due to the extensive tableware required for a traditional eating baidang. While some may perceive it as outdated and troublesome, the tradition carries a deep meaning. It embodies critical social values such as gotong-royong (mutual cooperation), the value of politeness, and the strengthening of friendship while also providing a space for exchanging ideas.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the development of food and drink hygiene supervision in Cirebon City during the colonial period. The motivation for writing this article stems from the lack of research on food and drink hygiene supervision in the Dutch East Indies, par ticularly in Cirebon City. The study applied a historical method consisting of four stages: heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The findings indicate that imple menting food and drink hygiene monitoring policies in Cirebon City was prompted by Euro peans' concerns about poor food quality, the influence of ethical politics, efforts to dispel fatalistic attitudes among the local population, and the typhus outbreak in 1913. During that period, the city government made several efforts to improve public health, including enhancing the conditions of slaughterhouses, monitoring food factories (such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes), conducting inspections in traditional markets, and promoting hy giene within the community

Abstract

This article looks into the transmigration programme in Rasau Jaya from 1971 to 1980, focusing on the circumstances and socio-economic challenges that transmigrants dealt with. Transmigration was one of the New Order government programmes to address the overcrowding and poverty issues. This research aims to analyse how effectively the transmigration program in Rasau Jaya can address the issue of poverty. The study adopted the historical method, utilising various sources such as documents from Dinas Transmigrasi Provinsi Kalimantan Barat, Direktorat Penelitian dan Persiapan, Direktorat Jenderal Transmigrasi, newspapers and some other relevant literature. This article highlights the poverty experienced by transmigrants, a topic often overlooked in previous studies. The findings suggest that the transmigration program in Rasau Jaya has fallen short of its goal of alleviating poverty. Three main factors contribute to this shortfall, including inadequate government preparation, the basic skills of the transmigrants, and the ecological conditions prevalent in the Rasau Jaya area. As a result, transmigrants in Rasau Jaya are compelled to seek employment outside of agriculture, taking on roles as construction workers or timber workers and even as homeless individuals doing various odd jobs.
