Abstract

The Tanjung Tirto sugar factory was one of 18 sugar factories that had been established in Yogyakarta during the Dutch East Indies administration. This factory was built in 1874 and was destroyed in the 1940s. The layout and development of the sugar factory from 1920-1940 were discussed in this study. Based on field observations, the emplacement of the factory buildings was not complete and only left a few housing buildings for the former factory employees. In addition, reconstruction through an old map is a way to find out the location and development of this factory. This study is important considering the lack of sugar factories in Yogyakarta which are the object of archeological research studies.

Abstract

Candi Sukuh is a sacred temple complex shaped like step-pyramid structure with three terraces, which was used on late period of Majapahit Kingdom, around 15th century. Every terrace is decorated with various reliefs, either ornamental reliefs or narrative reliefs. The tale of the narrative reliefs had been studied by some researchers, but they had different opinion about it. There are also allegations on the tale from those reseachers of some other narrative reliefs, and narrative reliefs that have never been studied before. There are 13 carved stones of those narrative reliefs, with one or more panels on each stone. Each relief may consist of various relief components, such as figures, animals, plants, buildings, weapons, and other things. Those components are compared with other studies of relief on Majapahit period to obtain early identifications of the relief. After that, each component is arranged to form 18 tale scenes. The scenes are compared with Ancient Javanese texts or other sacred building reliefs from Majapahit period, so that the source of the tale and particular scene of the tale are identified.

Abstract

This paper is intended to examine more about the lives of neolithic supporters in West Java and can provide clues about patterns of human behavior in utilizing space for its activities. There are 19 neolithic sites along Das Cibeureum, spread over two subdistricts, namely Curugbitung and Maja. The results showed that the 19 sites were grouped. This paper uses the analysis of the nearest neighbor which considers several factors, including: (1) distance, (2) linkages (interactions), and (3) movements. Neolithic sites are in two districts, namely Curugbitung and Maja Districts. The conclusion from this paper is that the 19 sites are grouped. The grouping of neolithic sites is strongly influenced by the location of the river. This is due to the potential of the river as a transportation route and water provider for supporting living needs.

Abstract

In the Tasikmalaya area many sites are found in the form of tombs and ancient grave complexes from the Islamic era. In archaeological studies, the tomb can be interpreted as a place where the body is buried and also the former location of the event by an important figure. The tomb can be interpreted as a grave and also petilasan. Through the tomb data can be revealed various aspects such as background concepts and figures buried. This study of ancient tombs in Tasikmalaya aims to reveal the background of the concept of site selection and the background of the buried figure. The research method is qualitative research through descriptive type. Disclosure of research problems is obtained through literature study and trace data reinforcement in the form of manuscripts. Ancient tombs in Tasikmalaya are on the plain and on top of a hill. The tomb at the top of the hill shows the continuity of previous cultural concepts, namely that high ground in the form of a hill or mountain is a sacred place. Some figures who are buried have a big role in the welfare of the community in the past, namely the opening of the Cibeureum situ.

Research planning to the realm of history and archaeology is the starting point towards the crucial impact on the work that should be done. Weaknesses in determining focus in planning,   impact on the inefficiency and prolonged wastage. To overcome these problems required careful planning strategy at the initial level, i.e. by way of adapting the strategies developed in other sciences. One planning research strategy that can be use in the context of archaeology which became the idea in this article is the marketing strategy developed by Philip Kotler. The use of this frame work is to give the direction and focus of the research be more measurable, efficient, proper and exact. Keywords: Archaeology, research design, marketing

Abstract

Since a period of Hindu-Buddhist influence,Cirebon region has been an important area, although geographically not as a government center. The existence of the Huludayeuh inscription shows that the area was noticed by the rulers of the Sunda Kingdom. When the Sunda Kingdom suffered a setback and Muslim communities on the coast developed to form political power, the southern region of Cirebon flourished. One of the developing settlements is the Gegunung Village on the edge of Ci Pager. This study shows some archaeological objects in the area. The results of this study are expected to be used as input for policy decisions in the management of ancient relics. In Gegunung Village there are several petilasan as an early sign of the emergence of settlements. Based on oral traditions, the emergence and development of these settlements began with a border guard post.

Abstract

The term of ?Hajj? that applied to someone who has carried out the fifth pillar of Islam, at the time of the Prophet Muhammad was unknown. In the early period of Islam entrance in Indonesia, the term was also never been used. In some ancient texts, such as the Kronika Pasai and Sajarah Banten, the title was not used for figures that had alreadyperformed the hajj at first. The emergence of the title ?Hajj? might be a symptom of retraditionalization. In pre-Islamic times, the term hajj was often used. In some inscriptions, this designation was often found. The problem that discussed in thispaper is why the Hajj title is applied to Muslims who have performed the hajj. The method that used in  this research is through searching historical sources. It is known that the title of the hajj at that time was used for respectable matters. Retraditionalization symptoms in the term ?Hajj?, intended to pay respect.
