Abstract

Cross cultural understanding is one of the courses that require lecturers' creativity in their teaching in the classroom. Students difficulties in understanding cross cultural until they can feel the cultural confusion experienced by a stranger who enters a region that has a different culture with him/ her. The purpose of this study is to get the best method used in course learning cross cultural understanding. The method used is research literature by comparing and analyzing some cross-cultural understanding of learning methods in several past studies. The results of this study are 1) The used learning method must involve students in the foreign culture studied; 2) Internet is one of the best learning media in the process of learning cross cultural understanding; 3) Students at least understand the language of the culture studied. The conclusion of this study is that cross cultural understanding learning is not easy to do if it only provides theory because students need an in-depth understanding of the cross-cultural process which experienced by someone.

Abstract

This study was quantitatively conducted to discover whether Feedback Techniques had effect on students’ achievement in writing descriptive essay. By controlling the effect of vocabulary mastery, this study was also conducted to investigate the interaction effect of both independent variables. The population was grade X students of SMA Harapan I Medan 2010-2011 school year. There were eight classes. Each classes consisted of 35 students. Sample of this research was two classes divided into two groups representing the high and low level of vocabulary mastery. The first group was taught by using Peer Response Technique and the second was taught by using Teacher Response Technique. The data collected were analyzed with two ways analysis of variance (2x2 ANOVA). The findings indicated that (1) Peer Response and Teacher Response Techniques significantly affect students’ achievement in writing Descriptive Essay (Sig = 0.013<0.05). Students’ achievement in writing Descriptive taught by using Peer Response Technique is significantly higher than that of students’ taught by using Teacher Response Technique (76.8>74.8), (2) the achievement in writing Descriptive of the students with high vocabulary mastery is significantly higher than that of with low vocabulary mastery (79.8>71) and (3) There is an interaction between feedback techniques and vocabulary mastery to the students’ achievement in writing descriptive (0.002<0.05). Therefore, feedback techniques and students’ vocabulary mastery significantly affect the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. Based on the findings, it is suggested that feedback techniques should be applied in English instruction to develop the students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

This research analized the multimodal of advertisement Azan Prayer Malaysia Version. Advertising both print media ads and electronic media ads is one text that has complexity of meaning. The complexity of the meaning that occurs because to convey the message in the ad not only used elements of language but also elements of nonverbal language and other visual means. Therefore, to understand the complexity of meaning needs to be done multimodal analysis in the ad. The multimodal analysis discussed in this study uses functional systemic linguistic theory (LSF). Multimodal model of analysis was developed from a combination of multimodal theory (Anstey & Bull, 2010), and multimodal analysis by Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996-2006). From the analysis of the advertisement Azan Prayer Malaysia Version obtained that this ad has multimodal semiotic system which includes linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spastial elements.

Abstract

This research deals with speech function on the cigarettes advertisement. The objective of this study is to find out the types of speech function and the most dominant types of speech function on the cigarettes advertisement. Descriptive qualitative method was carried out to analyze the data. Source of data of this research would be taken from cigarettes advertisement. Of the selected from table, table 1 – table 7. In collecting the data, some references related to speech function found out in the library. In analyzing the data, first each slogan in each cigarettes advertisement, second to identify the types of speech function which are mostly dominant, and the last to find the dominant type of speech function. The cigarettes advertisement were analyzed on the occurrences of speech function based on the types of speech function on the cigarettes advertisement. There were 118 items, namely statements 74 items (62,7%), questions 14 items (11,8%), offer 13 items (11,1%), and command 17 items (14,4%). And the dominant speech function is statements 118 items (62,7%).

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any significant effect of reciprocal teaching model on students’ reading comprehension of discussion text a study at the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pinangsori. The researcher take one class of population with cluster sampling, they are XII-IPA 1 there are 36 students. The researcher used experimental method in this research. To get an accurate data, researcher collects data by doing observation and test. After calculating the data, It is found that 1) the result using reciprocal teaching model get the mean score 85,71 it is categorized “very good”, 2) The score of the students’ reading comprehension discussion text before given reciprocal teaching model get the mean score is 62.75 it is categorized “enough”. 3) The score of the students’ reading comprehension discussion text after given reciprocal teaching model get the mean score is 74.19 it is categorized “good”. As a result, the researcher found that value of ttest is 11, 18 then the the researcher found the value of ttable is 1, 29 at 95% significant level. After comparing ttest and ttable, it is got that ttest is greater than ttable (11,18 > 1,29). It means that there is significant effect of Reciprocal Teaching Model on Students’ Reading Comprehension of Discussion Text at the Twelfth grade of SMA Negeri1Pinangsori. The hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

This study aims to get answers as a result of an in-depth analysis of the role of teacher leadership in the classroom in the formation of student characters. The focus of this research is the formation of student character and sub focus is the role of teacher leadership. This research was conducted at SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia - Medan by using qualitative approach and research method was case study. This study was conducted based on data obtained from the grand tour results and the results of some previous research on teacher leadership and its relevance to the formation of character education students. The result of this research was teacher leadership is very influential on student character formation.

Abstract

Translation is dealing with transferring meaning from source language into target language. In simple cases, it can be translating word by word. While for some cases, such translation may seem awkward or even confusing and funny. It may happen when certain words are translated into inappropriate equivalent words. The translation, then, fails to transfer the meaning from source language. Based on the aim, it is necessary to catch the idea of the text. English as the language of science, including computer, is used widely in many textbooks. In fact, there are many words which have no equivalent words in Indonesian. This study analyzes the process of translating English into Indonesian on computer text. The object of the study is English articles used by Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science of Potensi Utama University. The study shows that there are two things to be paid attention in translating English computer text into Indonesian; finding the appropriate equivalent words, and keeping non-equivalent words as they are.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how the application of role plays methods in an effort to improve English speaking skill of the tenth grade students at SMA Harapan-I Medan. This research is a Classroom Action Research study conducted collaboratively. Subjects in this study were students of the tenth grade students at SMA Harapan-I Medan. While the object of this study is the application of role play methods, to improve students' speaking skill. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the percentage of the results of the completeness of the students' scores between cycle I and cycle II had increased. In the first cycle, the percentage of completeness was 40% while in the second cycle there was a significant increase to 63%. There is a 43% increase between the pre-cycle, actions of cycle I and cycle II. Thus this study was declared successful and it can be said that the use of role play methods can improve student learning outcomes in speaking

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate whether the application of Two Stay - Two Stray strategy significantly improves the students’ achievement on reading comprehension exposition text. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second grade of SMA Negeri 2 Binjai which consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of three meetings and second cycle consisted of three meetings. The instrument for collecting the quanitative data was essay test for reading and the instruments for collecting the qualitative data were diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, interview sheet and students’ activities record. Based on the analysis, students’ achievement is improved in every test. In test I, the mean score was 56.44. In test II in cycle I, the mean score was 69.89, and in the test III in cycle II, the mean score was 81.58. Based on the observation sheet, diary notes, and interview sheet, it was found that the teaching learning process ran well. the students were more active, enthusiastic in working in group . It was concluded that Two Stay-Two Stray Strategy can improve the students’ achievement in reading exposition text.

Abstract

This Study deals with plosive consonants in English and Minangnese. The method of research used was descriptive qualitative method. It was conducted to find out the similarities and differences between English and Minangnese plosive consonants in investigating the learning problems of English by Minangnese speakers. In conducting the data, documentary and recording technique were done. Then, the data were analyzed based on the four procedures of Randal Whitman (1970). Those are description, selection, contrast, and prediction. The findings indicate that there were similarities and differences between English and Minangnese plosive connsonants. The similarities are in the place of articulation at bilabial [b, p], alveolar [d], and velars [g, k] in initial and medial positions, and in their state of the vocal cords, having the same voiced and voiceless sound. The differences are in their numbers, allophones, final positions, aspirations, and the place of articulation at [t] sound, which is alveolar in English but it is dental in Minangnese.
