Abstract

Infections in the jawbone present many complications to both doctors and patients. One systemic factor that increases the risk of disorders in the oral cavity is sickle cell anemia (SCA). Patients with SCA also have an increased risk of orthopedic mani-festations such as osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis features vary in their radiographic appearance, which can be panoramic, peri-apical, and occlusal, or additional modalities. This article reviews the radiographs of osteomyelitis in the oral cavity with risk fac-tors such as SCA, using the literature review method. The step is to collect information from several sources from the literature. It was found that panoramic, periapical, and computed tomography (CT) radiographs are the most commonly used radiographs and are able to describe the characteristics of osteomyelitis in SCA patients specifically. It was concluded that the typical pic-ture of CT examination type is associated bone sequestra which is a typical picture of osteomyelitis with SCA. While on pa-noramic and periapical radiographs a diffuse radiolucent picture and bone resorption are found and other radiographic feat-ures can be found in the form of small radiopaque areas and bone infarcts around the apex of the associated teeth.

Abstract

Herpes zoster is a disorder caused by the varicella zoster virus with the characteristics of multiple, painful and unilateral lesi-ons. This case report aims to describe the management of herpes zoster in preventing postherpetic complications in the elderly. A 64-year-old man complained of blisters on his left face and canker sores on the palate and inner cheek for 1 week ago. Two days earlier accompanied by fever 390C. Extraoral examination revealed a hemorrhagic serous crust on the left face, intraoral examination showed multiple ulcers with erosive lesions on the palate, left buccal mucosa and gingiva. The extraoral and in-traoral lesions are unilateral. The working diagnosis of this case was herpes zoster et left orofacial region. The therapy was gi-ven valacyclovir tablets 800mg 5 times/day, NaCl 0.9% compress on the face, and vitamin B complex with zinc. Improve-ment occurred after 1 week of treatment. Appropriate management of herpes zoster in elderly patient can prevent complica-tions of post herpetic neuralgia that most often occur in the elderly.

Abstract

The treatment of vital pulpotomy in primary teeth is more complex than that of permanent teeth, so dentists are expected to be able to choose the right medicament, so as to improve the pulp healing process and not damage the seeds of permanent teeth. Medications commonly used for vital pulpotomy are mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), formocresol and calcium hydoxide. This literature review discusses the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments. In this literature review, articles were collected using Google Scholar and Pubmed with the keywords vital pulpotomy, mineral tri-oxide aggregate, formocresol, and calcium hydroxide with the inclusion criteria being articles published in 2013-2021, availa-able in full-text, and written in both Indonesian and English. It was concluded that the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments was seen clinically and radiographically, and all three materials had a high success rate. However, MTA can be said to have a higher success rate because clinically and radiographically it does not show failure compared to other medicaments.

Abstract

Oral health problems, especially dental caries, are the most common health problems experienced by children in Indonesia. Streptococcus mutans as the main causative agent of dental caries has the spaP gene which plays a role in the initial process of bacterial invasion. Performing PCR on children's dental plaque samples can determine the presence of the genes spaP S.mutans. Then, the existing data were statistically analyzed using the logistic regression method to assess the relationship of the genes spaP S.mutans to the severity of dental caries. From the research results, 54 samples contained the spaP gene of S.mutans. The prevalence of gene S.mutans spaP in dental plaque in children aged 3-5 years in Denpasar City was 69.2%. The statistical ana-lysis results revealed that the spaP gene of S.mutans (p=0.016) had a p<0.05. It is concluded that the variable presence of the S.mutans spaP had a significant relationship with the severity of dental caries on children aged 3-5 years in Denpasar City.

Abstract

Strawberries can be used as a stain remover because they contain ellagic acid which has the potential to make teeth white and eli-minate bad breath. This study examines the effectiveness of strawberry extract as an alternative cleaning agent for stains caused by extrinsic discolouration on heat polymerised acrylic resin (HPAR) plates. Using a pretest and posttest with control group de-sign, 24 RAPP samples were soaked in coffee solution for 7 days. On the 8th day, the colour change was observed using a spec-trophotometer on the HPAR plates. The samples were divided into four groups, namely soaking groups using 25%, 45% straw-berry extract, sodium hypochlorite, and distilled water for 14 days. On the 15th day, the colour change was observed. Data were processed with SPSS using paired t-test and one-way Anova test which showed significant differences in each treat-ment (p<0.05), except for the distilled water group. It was concluded that 25% and 45% strawberry (Fragaria x annanassea) extract solution is effective as an alternative cleaning agent for stains due to extrinsic discolouration on HPAR plates.

Abstract

Catfish (Pangasius sp) is a freshwater fish that contains fatty acids and amino acids. This study explores the antimicrobial ef-fect of catfish meat extract in vitro laboratory experiment with post-test only control group design. The extraction process of fish meat was carried out by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. The minimum inhibitory concentration test was carried out using the liquid dilution method and the inhibition zone test was carried out using the disc fusion method. The ex-tract concentrations used were 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The results showed a cloudy appearance and no inhibi-tion zone in all tubes containing catfish meat extract tested on Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans bacteria. While in the Phorphyromonas gingivalis test, a clear appearance in the tube was found at a concentration of 50%, and an inhibition zone at a concentration of 25%. It is concluded that catfish meat extract has an anti-bacterial effect against P.gingivalis, but has no effect on S.aureus and C.albicans.

Abstract

Cinnamon leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and tannins that can help stimulate fibroblast cell formation and inhi-bit bacterial growth with antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities so as to accelerate the healing process in inflammation. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of cinnamon leaf extract gel (Cinnamomum burman-nii) 35% on the number of fibroblast cells in healing inflammation of the buccal mucosa of wistar strain white rats (Rattus nor-vegicus). Laboratory experimental research in vivo with randomised post-test only control group design using 30 wistar rats which were divided into three groups: positive control (K+) given H2O2 30% + Aloclair gel; negative control (K-) given H2O2 30%, and the third group (P) given H2O2 30% + 35% DKM extract gel. The results showed the mean number of fibroblast cells in groups (K+), (K-), and (P) were 51.1 cells, 29.1 cells, and 43.8 cells, respectively. All groups showed significantly dif-ferent results (????<0.05) with the one-way Anova test. It is concluded that 35% DKM extract gel can increase the number of fi-broblast cells so that it can effectively heal the inflammation of the buccal mucosa of white wistar rats.

Abstract

Composite resin can undergo discolouration if exposed to dyes. The use of apples can whiten teeth because they contain ma-lic acid. True experiment research with pretest-posttest with control group design using 24 samples divided into 6 treatments, namely sample groups 1 and 2 (nanofiller and nanohybrid composite groups that have been discoloured soaked in apple fruit juice (Malus sylvestris Mill) 80% concentration, groups 3 and 4 (negative control group, discoloured nanofiller and nanohy-brid composites soaked in distilled water) and groups 5 and 6 (positive control group, discoloured nanofiller and nanohybrid composites soaked in 10% carbamide peroxide). The colour change was determined with a shade guide (Vitapan Classical). The results were normally distributed and homogeneous. One-way Anova test showed there was a significant difference in each group. In the independent t-test, there was a significant difference in colour change between nanofiller and nanohybrid composite resins that experienced discoloration in 80% apple juice immersion. It was concluded that nanofiller composite resin had lower discolouration compared to nanohybrid.

Abstract

An impacted tooth is a tooth that fails to erupt completely and is embedded in the alveolar bone due to a physical barrier in the form of bone and adjacent teeth. Mandibular second premolars rank third in frequency of tooth impaction. This article describes the management of impaction treatment of mandibular second premolars by surgical procedures. An 18-year-old male came to RSGMP Unhas with complaints of incomplete eruption of the right back tooth RB. History of pain about 5 months before and no complaints of swelling. There was no history of drug/food allergy and history of systemic disease was denied. Extra oral exa-mination, there was no abnormality with normal mouth opening. Intra oral examination, found partial eruption of tooth 45, palpation pain (-), hyperemia (-), calculus (+) and moderate OH. The treatment performed was odontectomy of tooth 45 under local anaesthesia. It was concluded that odontectomy was performed by creating a flap and reducing some of the bone surround-ing the tooth. The position of the impacted second premolar adjacent to the foramen mentale and the roots of neighbouring teeth is one of the factors that must be considered in performing surgery.

Abstract

Dentoalveolar fracture is a break in the hard tissue continuity of the tooth and alveolar structure, due to trauma; the injury may affect only the tooth and its supporting structures. Management of dentoalveolar fracture emergencies requires prompt and ap-propriate action and patient co-operation. This case review discusses the rapid and appropriate emergency management and closure of a fracture wound, in a 17-year-old male who presented with complaints of bleeding in the mouth, after a traffic acci-dent and falling with a face-first position on the asphalt. . The patient could not close his mouth properly because of the lower teeth that came out. Clinical examination revealed a dentoalveolar fracture. Treatment of dentoalveolar fracture was tooth ex-traction, wound irrigation, arch bar installation and wound suturing using local anaesthesia as well as antibiotic, anti-pain me-dication and antitetanus serum injection. It was concluded that trauma history information, diagnosis and treatment of dento-alveolar trauma should be done together so as to increase the success of treatment.
