Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia is still very high at around 80% of the population and is one of the major dental and oral health problems, this is coupled with a low level of dental care awareness. The prevalence of malocclusion because of the habit of drinking milk with bottle feedings was 49.5% of 377 children. This is habit because, the habit of drinking milk with a bottle feeding causes the movement of the baby's tongue like a sucking motion. This abnormal tongue motor activity will result in aberrant swallowing habits which will eventually cause malocclusion. Purpose: To determine the correlation between children using bottle feeding aged 4 - 6 years to the occurrence of malocclusion. Methods: This study uses the Analytical Observational method with a cross sectional study design. The sample consisted of 30 children aged 4 - 6 years who met the criteria of the study determined by filling out questionnaires and intra-oral examination of samples Result: The result of Spearman's correlation statistical test, obtained the correlation coefficient value (r=0.435) which shows a moderate correlation. The results of the linear regression test to see if there are long-term effects of using a bottle feeding on the occurrence of malocclusion, obtained a value (p <0.05) which shows a significant effect. Conclusion: There is a moderate correlation between children who use bottle feedings aged 4-6 years to malocclusion. The longer children use bottle feeding, the more severe the malocclusion of children. Keywords: Malocclusion, Bottle feeding

Abstract

Background:TheprevalenceofmalocclusioninIndonesiaisstillveryhigh,around80%ofIndonesianpopulation.Oneofthe causes of malocclusion is the bad habit of the oral cavity (non-nutritive sucking). The existence of bad habits that are usually done in children, especially at the age of 3 years can continue to the emergence of abnormalities such as the occurrence of malocclusion. Objective: To find out the relationship non-nutritive sucking towards malocclusion to children aged 3-5 years. Method: This study used analytical observational method with a cross sectional study design with 35 children samples had sedative habit. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Result: The relationship with the correlation test between children who had a non-nutritive sucking habit aged 3-5 years with malocclusion severity showed significant results (p < 0.05). The correlation between the two is 0.496 which means that it is a moderate correlation. The results of the influence test with linear regression test between the duration of the assault and the occurrence of malocclusion show significant results having an effect (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between children aged 3–5 years who have a non-nutritive sucking habits to the occurrence of malocclusion. The longer the duration of pressing, the higher the severity of the malocclusion.

Abstract

Background : The mixed tooth phase is the most important phase in the growth and development of the child's teeth and jaw. Interseptive treatment is given to children who experience a mixed dental phase, starting at the age of 7-8 years because at the age of 8 year permanent molars and permanent incisors have erupted. Early malocclusion’s treatment can avoid the occurrence of malocclusion and building the confidence in patients. The 2x4 appliance is a tool that provides good stability, which is applied to the first molars and erupted incisors. Conclusion : The corrections of malocclusion do not have to wait until the eruption of all permanent teeth. Waiting for eruption all permanent teeth will aggravate malocclusion and will make the treatment harder, such as treatments that require orthodontic surgical treatment, and extraction of permanent teeth. Treatment of malocclusion at an early age (7-8 years) will ease the correction of malocclusion because it is the age of growth and development of the jaw so the treatment time will be shorter compared to conventional orthodontic treatment.
