Abstract

This case report is aimed to describe the case management of a 20-year-old woman who came to Unhas RSGMP with the main complaint of yellowish upper and lower front teeth due to frequent consumption of tea for a long time. The patient felt less confi-dent and wanted her teeth to be whiter. The stages of external bleach treatment are carried out, namely tooth cleaning using a brush and pumice then determining the initial colour of the patient's teeth using the opalescence boost shade guide, astringent ap-plication to the gingival sulcus then gingival barrier. H2O2 40% bleach material was applied for 20 minutes with 2 application cy-cles. In the final stage, application of desensitiser material and giving post-bleaching instructions to the patient. After the bleach procedure, there was an increase in tooth colour of 4 grades from A2 to B1. At the 8-day post-bleaching control, there was no change in tooth colour. The patient was satisfied with the treatment results. It is concluded that external bleaching is a minimally invasive treatment that is simple and effective in providing aesthetic results on teeth that have extrinsic discoloration.

Abstract

To determine the antibacterial effectiveness of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigation solution and garlic extract nano-particles (Allium sativum Linn.) against Enterococcus faecalis. This type of research is an in vitro laboratory experiment with a post-test only with control group design using the dilution method. The research sample consisted of garlic nanoparticles, 2.5% NaOCl, and distilled water with each repetition carried out 3 times. The antibacterial ability is based on the inhibition zone formed around the stainless-steel cylinder on the MHA medium. Data processing and analysis techniques were carried out using the Shapiro Wilk test and one-way Anova. The average diameter of each inhibition zone for the antibacterial of garlic extract nano-particles with concentrations of 20%, 30% and 40% was 30.69±1.03 mm, 34.73±1.09 mm and 39.66±2.14 mm, meanwhile 2.5% NaOCl showed an average inhibition zone diameter of 35.49±0.55 mm. It is concluded that garlic extract nanoparticles concen-centrations of 20%, 30% and 40% have a very strong antibacterial effect against E.faecalis.

Abstract

The prevalence of tooth loss among Bugis in Wajo Regency is lower than the national and South Sulawesi figures. In an effort to maintain the health of their teeth to prevent cavities and tooth loss, the Bugis tribe conducts the local wisdom activity of map-panetta' isi every day. This research was conducted in four sub-districts in Wajo District, South Sulawesi Province with a sample of 75 people. This research is a mixed method research, using exploratory mixed method design. Snowball sampling technique was used. The results of this research show that mappanetta' isi is believed to trigger a self-cleansing effect and induce a bone remodelling process that keeps teeth healthy and strong. Mappanetta' isi has a philosophical meaning that has gone through the stages of socialisation, internalisation, and enculturation. Mappanetta' isi activity is challenged in the preservation process be-cause this activity is starting to fade among the younger generation of the Bugis tribe due to cultural shifts due to modernisation. In addition, mappanetta' isi can be used as a model for preventing tooth decay.

Abstract

The incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to increase sharply, it is estimated that by 2025 there will be 300 million DM sufferers. This article reviews a case of oral lesion association with DM and its management in dentistry. A 55-year-old man came to the Dental and Oral Hospital with complaints of discomfort when chewing due to 2 remaining teeth. The patient's parents had a history of DM. The patient smoked 4 packs of cigarettes per day. The patient used to consume alcohol but has now stopped. The patient has never been hospitalised in the past 1 year, has a history of DM disease at the age of 47 years, does not take rou-tine medications but only consumes herbs. A complete examination in the field of dentistry requires thorough history taking, good communication, and providing direct motivation to patients to maintain their oral health which is very important for the success of a treatment, especially sistemic diseases such as DM and must use collaborative methods to treat patients.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is an activity to fulfil infant nutrition, but according to a survey in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), 36.3 million infants are not exclusively breastfed (63%). During breastfeeding, the orofacial muscles are intensely exercised, provi-ding favourable stimulation to the sagittal growth of the mandible, and correction of the intermaxillary relationship resulting in protection against malocclusion. This literature review discusses the relationship between breastfeeding and the incidence of malocclusion in children. This study uses the literature review method with data sources from literature searches on the Google Scholar search site published in 2017-2021. Based on the results of the search for articles related to breastfeeding and mal-occlusion risk, 15 studies revealed that optimal breastfeeding for 6 months or more was associated with a reduced risk of mal-occlusion in children. It was concluded that breastfeeding can prevent malocclusion.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HA) participates in the chemical changes that occur during the initial hardening of cement. Calcium ions can be released from the surface of HA, which acts as additional calcium for the hardening reaction of glass ionomer cement (GIC). HA increases the density of the GIC because HA fills the empty spaces between the glass particles in the GIC. One source of cal-cium that can be obtained in the synthesis of HA is crab shells. The utilisation of crab is still limited to its meat for food purposes, while the shell is discarded. Crab shell waste can cause air and soil pollution. Mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) shell waste contains high calcium compounds (CaCO3), which is 53-78% of the dry shell weight. This high calcium content can be used as HA ma-terial. This literature review discusses the synthesis of HA which can be done by various methods, including precipitation, sol-gel, hydrothermal, and wet deposition methods. Different synthesis processes will certainly produce different HA powders. It is conclu-ded that calcium compounds found in crab shells can be an additional ingredient in HA for the strength of GIC cementation.

Abstract

Alveolar bone resorption is inevitable after tooth extraction. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a procedure to preserve and minimise alveolar bone resorption after tooth extraction for future prosthodontic treatment including dental implant placement. A total of 25 references were collected through an internet-based search using keywords, five of which were closely related to the topic at hand, namely the relationship between ARP treatment in preparation for implant placement in the last ten years analy-sed through table synthesis. ARP is a procedure to preserve or minimise alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction. ARP procedures using graft materials such as autograft, allograft, xenograft, or alloplastic, have been shown to minimise alveolar bone resorption so that implants requiring an ideal ridge can be obtained. It is concluded that ARP can minimise alveolar bone resorption post extraction and optimise the ridge prior to implant placement.

Abstract

Anti-inflammatory drugs when used in the long term can reduce organ function, so non-pharmacological treatments are carried out, namely with herbal preparation therapy from various types of plants. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) are one of the herbal medicinal plants that contain 1.4% tannins, 5% tritepenoids and 5% saponins and contain secondary metabolite compounds fla-vonoids, alkaloids, phenols. The flavonoid content in Moringa leaves provides anti-inflammatory activity. This literature review dis-cusses the benefits of M.oleifera as an anti-inflammatory. M.oleifera extract has vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, poly-phenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins that can be utilised as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and an-tibacterial. It is concluded that M.oleifera with flavonoids content can be utilised as an anti-inflammatory that inhibits and treats gi-ngivitis and other periodontal diseases.

Abstract

Pathological tooth migration (PTM) is a common disorder in chronic periodontitis. Clinical signs of PTM include labial tooth shift-ing, diastema, rotation and extrusion, resulting in aesthetic disturbance and patient visits to the dental clinic. This literature review discusses the periodontic-orthodontic treatment approach to manage PTM cases. An internet-based search was conducted to identify literature on PTM using several keywords. Orthodontic treatment can be started once the periodontal disease is controlled. Good treatment results can be achieved in patients with compromised dentofacial aesthetics. It is concluded that an interdiscipli-nary periodonti-orthodontic approach can help achieve good functional and aesthetic outcomes in malocclusion cases with per-vasive chronic periodontitis.

Abstract

Heat polymerised acrylic resin (HPAR) is often used in the manufacture of dentures because it has many advantages, but it also has disadvantages, including being easy to absorb liquids so that the base changes colour. Discolouration can be caused by se-veral factors, one of which is consuming coloured beverages such as green tea. This article reports on the post-soaking disco-louration of HPAR base in green tea solution. A laboratory experimental study with post test only with control group design used HPAR plate samples measuring 65×10×2.5 mm. These samples were divided into 6 groups: 3 treatment groups soaked in green tea solution for 3 days, 5 days, and 8 days, and 3 control groups soaked in artificial saliva for the same days. The discolouration was measured using Adobe Photoshop® with the CIELab system, the L*, a*, and b* were determined and the formula ∆E*ab was used. Data were analysed by Saphiro-Wilk test, two-way Anova test and LSD test. There were colour changes based on the type of soaking and soaking time (p=0.00; p<0.05)) and significant differences for 3 and 8 days (p=0.01). It is concluded that green tea solution causes discolouration of HPAR base.
