Abstract

Epulis is a tumour-like enlargement of the gingiva originating from the periodontal connective tissue, generally caused by chronic irritation, usually growing on the anterior teeth, reducing aesthetics, confidence and lip function so that treatment is ne-cessary. Various epulis treatment techniques with advantages and disadvantages of each treatment technique. This article com-pares the management of fibromatous epulis using a scalpel combined with periodontal flap surgery and electrosurgery through the presentation of several cases. Clinical examination showed no residual epulis, marginal gingiva at the epulis area was slight-ly reddish and the healing process went well in cases 1 and 2 compared to case 3. Pathological examination results showed that the tissue was covered by epidermis with pseudoepithelomatous hyperplasia, showed no malignancy and the diagnosis was fibromatous epulis. It was concluded that the management of fibromatous epulis showed good results with surgical technique using OFD combined scalpel compared with electrosurgery at 1 week control.

Abstract

Gingival enlargement is a condition of increased gingival size that can cause aesthetic and dental hygiene problems. One of the etiologies of gingival enlargement is systemic factors caused by the consumption of drugs from the calcium channel blocker class. Amlodipine taken by hypertensive patients can trigger gingival enlargement. Gingivectomy is performed to remove gi-ngival pockets and inflammation so as to obtain physiological, functional and aesthetic gingiva. A 47-year-old woman came to Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital, Makassar with complaints of discomfort and lack of confidence with the condition of the maxillary and mandibular front gums since six months earlier. The patient had been taking hypertension medication, amlodipine 10 mg once daily since 2 years ago. After disinfection of the surgical area, anaesthesia with lidocaine 2% nor epi-nephrine, pocket marking using pocket marker base, incision using Krickland knife, gingival removal using Orban knife and scaling and root planing, periodontal pack was used. It was concluded that hypertensive patients who take amlodipine can trig-ger gingival enlargement.

Abstract

The maxillary labial frenulum is often attached to the centre of the upper lip and between the two upper front teeth. Frenectomy is one of the periodontal plastic surgeries to remove high frenulum attachment. This article presents the management of cen-tral diastema correction with labial frenectomy to support successful orthodontic treatment and improve aesthetics. A 25-year-old female wanted to straighten her teeth, found an enlarged central diastema due to a labial frenulum that reached the gingival margin and incisor papillae; there was a high maxillary labial frenulum on the interdental papillae and surrounding tissues. Frenectomy was performed to remove the predisposing factor of periodontal disease due to high frenulum attachment and aimed to correct the central diastema along with orthodontic treatment. The 2-month postoperative control showed that the central diastema had been corrected. It was concluded that frenectomy is one of the periodontal plastic surgeries to remove the highly attached frenulum to achieve a pleasing aesthetic.

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common oral disease. Rampant caries often occurs in children, because it has more organic matter and water content while less mineral content and thinner enamel thickness than permanent teeth. This case report discusses the des-cription of rampant caries in children who visit Baiturrahmah Dental Hospital Padang. Clinical examination, supporting examina-tion and treatment and communication, information, education to parents about their children's dental health were carried out. In principle, overcoming behaviour can be done with a friendly approach so that it does not seem that the dentist will hurt. In car-rying out special treatment for rampant caries patients who are generally very young, the impression of pain must be avoided. If rampant caries is not treated immediately, it will have a negative impact on the nutritional status and quality of life of the child. In-fection, decreased appetite, sleep discomfort, impaired immune and endocrine responses, and metabolic failure due to dental caries are factors that cause malnutrition in toddlers.

Abstract

The submandibular abscess is part of a deep neck abscess. A deep neck abscess is formed in a potential space between the deep neck fascia due to the spread of infection from various sources, such as teeth, mouth, throat, paranasal sinuses, middle ear and neck. Infection that occurs in the submandibular space originates from infection of the floor of the mouth teeth, pharynx, and submandibular lymph nodes. A 31-year-old female patient came to the emergency room of Sultan Fatah Hospital Demak with clinical symptoms leading to a submandibular abscess, where there are complaints that the right cheek is swollen to the neck, the lower right wisdom tooth sometimes hurts and has holes. Radiological examination performed on the patient showed the impression of an abscess at the apical impaction of the tooth. Laboratory tests were found normal.

Abstract

Dental caries is a tissue damage that starts from the surface of the pit, fissure and interproximal area extending towards the pulp. The purpose of this research was to determine the description of dental caries disease in the Dental Clinic at Palmerah Health Centre on 2019-2021. This study used a retrospective descriptive method from the SIKDA report at the dental clinic. The highest dental caries was recorded in 2019 with 3999 patients (64%), the majority (88%) were more than 15 years old and dominated by female patients (65%). The majority of patient cases were pulp abnormalities, dentinal caries and abscesses. It was concluded that most of the treatments performed were root canal treatment, fixed fillings and premedication. However, the number of treatments was recorded to decrease in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with most treatments being premedication.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in children under five due to chronic malnutrition. Stunting can cause disruption of oral health, such as a decrease in salivary flow rate and pH which can lead to caries risk. This study aims to determine the descrip-tion of salivary flow rate and pH in stunted children. Quantitative research with descriptive type through a cross sectional ap-proach, conducted at Ummah Islamic Kindergarten in December 2023 with a total sample of 33 people taken by total sampling. The results showed that the salivary flow rate of 16 people (48.5%) was in the low category and the salivary pH of 19 people (57.6%) was in the acidic category. It was concluded that the salivary flow rate in stunted children was in the low category and the pH of saliva in stunted children was in the acidic category.

Abstract

S.mutans bacteria were present in 75.4% of denture users; C.albicans was found more, however. Herbal materials that are rich in antibacterial and antifungal content, began to be developed in the field of dentistry, one of which is the fruit pulp (FPA), or seeds (SA) of ajwa which are classified as high in waste. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum kill concentration (MKC) in the comparison of FPA and SA (Phoenix dactylifera L) extracts against the growth of S.mutans and C.albicans were studied. Laboratory experimental research with posttest only design; data were processed and analysed using one-way Anova test. With a p-value of 0.017 which is smaller than 0.05, it is shown that the treatment concentrations of 3.25%, 6.50%, 12.50%, 25%, and 50% have a significant effect. The MIC value of SA extract against S.mutans was 3.25%, while for FPA it was 12.5%. The MKC value of SA extract against C.albicans was 12.5% and for FPA was 50%. It is concluded that 3.25% SA extract can strongly inhibit the growth of Streptococcus, while FPA inhibits with a concentration of 12.5%. SA and FPA extracts of 3.25% have inhibited the growth of C.albicans.
