Abstract

An unforeseen repercussion of the COVID-19 pandemic was a substantial disruption of international economic activity. Similarly affected was the Special Region of Yogyakarta, one of the most visited tourist havens in Indonesia. Initial policies implemented in the midst of the pandemic were pivotal in assessing the government's readiness to address unanticipated circumstances. In addition to disseminating a wide range of information and ideas, mass media functions as a vital social institution by monitoring the political climate and the effectiveness of the government. By employing Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, it is possible to ascertain the relation between public policy and mass media. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine how the news media, particularly Tribun Jogja, communicated the tourism policies of the Special Region of Yogyakarta concurrently with the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic (January-June 2020). During the whole of the investigation, it was critical to partition the data into distinct time intervals in order to draw verdicts. As a result of the prevailing circumstances, Tribun Jogja was convened to deliberate on the tourism policies enacted by the administration of the Yogyakarta Special Region. Furthermore, it was disclosed that the previously mentioned organisations were participating in collaborative initiatives.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between visitor attitudes toward the destination in Nepal Van Java and the components of the tourism destination, such as attractions, accessibility, amenities, activities, and ancillary services. Quantitative research was implemented in conjunction with deductive reasoning. A total of 100 respondents served as samples. Additionally, the technical data analysis employed a correlation test performed with the assistance of SPSS software. The results of this study indicated that there was a correlation between visitor attitudes toward destinations and the components of tourism destinations. The tourism destination's most significant component was attraction, followed by activities, ancillary services, amenities, and accessibility. Despite the accessibility identification of "difficult," Nepal Van Java's attractiveness and the activities it provides for tourists continue to captivate them.

Abstract

The majority of critical cultural tourism studies posit that commodification is a pragmatic process that detaches the essence of cultural property from its proprietors, even if there is no clear ontological demarcation in defining how something appears as culture and cultural resources. This paper aims to elucidate the potential re-conceptualization scheme of cultural resource management by analyzing the emergence of the cultural tourism crisis in the COVID-19 pandemic era through the adoption of the production of nature approach in the critical Marxist study. This paper commences with a preliminary explanation of the process by which cultures are perpetually produced and reproduced by society, thereby becoming a component of nature. This paper also considers the temporality and contextual dimension of cultural resources. Rather than introducing a novel concept for a new cultural tourism product, the current pandemic situation allows for a critical examination of the manner in which resources are being produced. This reflection can serve as a foundation for the continued advancement of cultural resource management practices.

Abstract

It was initially believed that tourism was a sector capable of reducing global inequality in numerous academic and practical discussions. Nevertheless, in the years that followed, a number of academics and scholars began to question the efficacy of tourism as a means of reducing regional inequality. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine whether tourism has the potential to alleviate or exacerbate inequality in a given region. The Yogyakarta Special Region Province serves as the focal point of this study. This study employs secondary data that is publicly accessible through the DIY Tourism Statistics page and the National Planning Agency (Bappenas). Income inequality, as denoted by the GINI index, serves as the dependent variable in this inquiry. The GINI index is a numerical value between 0 and 1, with 0 indicating an equal income distribution and 1 indicating ideal income inequality. The independent variable in this study is government revenue from the tourism sector (PP). This research indicates that the income of the tourism industry to the DIY government exacerbates the income distribution in DIY, particularly in the GINI index corridor.

Abstract

The eruption of the Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacted tourism activities in the Lava Tour sector within the Umbulharjo Village of Cangkringan, sparking concerns among locals regarding the looming threat of job insecurity, particularly among jeep drivers. In light of this, fostering strong personal resilience becomes crucial in tackling the issue of job insecurity. This research aims to shed light on how members of the 13 Lava Tour jeep communities in Umbulharjo Village managed to navigate, adapt to, and eventually recover from job insecurity. The Conservation of Resources Theory (COR), outlined by Hobfoll (2018), serves as the framework to analyze this resilience. Results indicate that community members indeed faced job insecurity, experiencing temporary unemployment and a profound sense of helplessness due to lacking support networks within the community, the Asosiasi Jip Wisata Lereng Merapi Sisi Timur, and the government. However, the resources played a crucial role in enabling them to confront this challenge. Consequently, members of the Lava Tour tourism community in Umbulharjo Village demonstrated enhanced individual resilience after the pandemic, notably through implementing financial management practices such as savings programs and introducing innovative shifts in their marketing strategies.

Abstract

In numerous studies, psychological empowerment is considered crucial for assessing the extent to which individuals perceive their ability to shape their roles and overcome job difficulties (Speitzer, 1995). As an industry, tourism stands out as one of the sectors predominantly occupied by women, accounting for as much as 55% (UN Women, 2020), thus frequently utilized as a tool for empowerment by various stakeholders (Staudt, 1990; Scheyvens, 2000; Chevalier, 2023). Consequently, it is intriguing to examine how psychological empowerment is construed by tourism workers. The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of self-efficacy and community engagement on the psychological empowerment of participants in the WTID Camp 2023. WTID Camp 2023 is a program initiated by Women in Tourism Indonesia aimed at raising awareness among tourism students and fresh graduates regarding the importance of gender equality in the Indonesian tourism industry workforce. This study employed quantitative research using multiple linear regression analysis (Sugiyono, 2010), where multiple linear regression aimed to predict the fluctuations in the dependent variable when two or more independent variables were manipulated (increased or decreased in value). There were 56 samples comprising tourism students participating in the WTID Camp 2023, aged between 18 and 24 years. Data were obtained through questionnaires constructed using Likert scales. The results indicate that community engagement significantly influences psychological empowerment. Similarly, self-efficacy significantly influences community engagement. However, self-efficacy does not significantly influence psychological empowerment.

Abstract

One of the Gunung Sewu Geopark's three main pillars, geointerpretation of landscape duality, is implemented by special interest tour guides who possess the knowledge and abilities necessary for the job site and who must be proficient in cave exploration methods and cave science. With the primary tourist attraction being a cave with a tunnel length of 1200 meters and an underground river, this study was conducted at the Cerme Cave Tourist Destination, specifically in Srunggo Village, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, to observe how the Pokdarwis Cerme tour guide implements interpretation in tourism spaces. The research was conducted utilizing a logical approach and qualitative approaches. Data gathering methods included cave and surface area mapping, cave photography, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. The research findings show that there are two tourism spatial zonings that are related to the content of geointerpretation, and the second finding is interpretation activities of geological objects that are mixed with local wisdom through the story of the spread of Islam by the Wali Songo in Cerme, which is believed to have occurred in the past by the local community. This tale has been passed down through generations and is part of the material given to guests by Cerme Cave tour guides. These beliefs impact the destination's toponymy, ornaments and places within the cave, as well as geointerpretation activities carried out in the Cerme Cave Tourist Destination's dual landscape.

Abstract

This study examined the ethical concerns related to profit-driven voluntourism, specifically highlighting Project Bakti Millenial #6 in Banda Neira. The study sought to elucidate the ethical issues and obstacles inherent in voluntourism, emphasizing the intricacies of merging voluntary activity with commercially-driven tourism activities, which was termed a 'voluntrap'. This study offered a comprehensive examination of the ethical implications and repercussions of such programs and delivered a critical analysis of Project Bakti Millenial #6 as a case study. This research revealed that the complexities stemming from the commercialization of voluntourism underscore ethical concerns, including deceptive claims, information manipulation, and business practices that commodify social activities, thereby necessitating a heightened sense of responsibility in fulfilling the altruistic objectives of voluntourism. Organizing voluntourism necessitates the active involvement of local communities, financial transparency, ethical education, partnership with qualified entities, and enhanced communication to assure sustainability, foster trust, and prevent future issues.

Abstract

The Borobudur Temple is a vulnerable cultural heritage site confronting the challenge of overcrowding impacting site preservation, visitor experience, and economic viability. This study analyzed the extension of visitor flow management applications to the buffer zone in heritage locations, focusing on the enhancement of the trip experience. The Waluku: Cultivating Civilization sub-theme, integral to the Borobudur Trail of Civilization concept, has the ability to enhance preservation via the Visitor Flow Management Process, which encompasses three phases: restricted, redistributive, and interpretative. This research employed qualitative methods by gathering data through interviews, literature reviews, and observations. The research findings revealed that the three stages operate independently and do not significantly affect the preservation of the Borobudur Temple's physical and cultural assets. Restrictions could undermine the objective of enhancing engagement and interaction with culture and nature, rendering them less effective. Meanwhile, the other two stages had minimal impact due to infrequent reservations. Itineraries may vary based on demand, and there is no interpretative narrative concerning the relationship between relief and tourism activities. Conflicts of interest and insufficient local community engagement provide barriers to the program's development.

Abstract

In the tourist system, organizational structures have a crucial part in managing human resources, sustainability planning, and handling management. To ensure the sustained existence of the tourism industry, it is necessary to investigate the phenomena of deteriorating organizations in the sector to determine its roots and identify remedies. This study aimed at evaluating the current state of the Pokdarwis Pesona Singo Langu organization in Kampung Susu Lawu and determining the elements that have weakened it and impeded its efficacy. Using descriptive qualitative analysis, this research collected data from community members, stakeholders, and the chairman of Pokdarwis Pesona Singo Langu through observation and interviews. Three organizational components goals, functions, and formation were the main subjects of the analysis. The findings showed that the goal element has been successfully attained because of the clear legal status. However, there were deficiencies in the goal element. A lack of empathy from the community and the top-down approach to governance and operationalization were two main factors that are undermining the organization. The formation of newly created organizations by younger organizations, the dynamics of the political year, and a lack of coordination and communication were examples of external variables. If corrective action is not done quickly, this phenomenon is likely to set off a wider chain reaction.
