Abstract

This article studies the relationship between the types of speech acts and the level of trustworthiness provided by the interviewees in the process of investigative interviewes in Situbondo police office. The types of speech acts were analyzed based on Searle’s illocutionary acts, i.e. assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declarations. While the level of trustworthiness was analyzed using three levels of trustworthiness, i.e. high, moderate, and low. This is a qualitative research. The data in the form of interviewees’ speech and assessment of the level of trustworthiness were collected using sampling technique method, content analysis, and interview. The results of this study indicate that the five types of speech acts can be found in the interviewee’s statements in investigation process at Situbondo resort police station. The type of assertive speech acts that serves to convey information was the most frequently used by the interviewees in answering investigator questions. This is because the questions of the investigator aims to gather information about a crime. In addition, this study also found that expressive speech acts tended to produce speech with low level of trustworthiness, while assertives tended to produce speech with moderate levels of trustworthiness.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes are broad categories which reflect the impressions and beliefs about appropriate behavior for women and men. The issue of gender stereotypes still exists today, and the society wants to understand that gender stereotypes can have an important influence on career and relationships. The data in this research were in the form of dialogues, and behaviours of characters in The Five Year Engagement movie. This research was done by analyzing the data qualitatively. The steps of data analysis consisted of sorts the data that were related with gender stereotypes theory, classified the scenes of dialogue and behavior, and described how gender stereotypes were reflected based on the types of basic kinds and types of stereotypes based on the role in The Five Year Engagement movie. The result of the research described basic kinds of gender stereotypes, there were four data indicated personality traits, five data for domestic behaviours, two data for occupation, and four data for physical appearance. Then, these data were classified into types of gender stereotypes based on the roles, there were seven data for masculinity, five data for feminity, and five data found of androgyny. Based on the analysis, the dominant types of gender stereotypes based on the roles was masculinity which had eight data.

Abstract

Semantics is the study of the meaning of words, phrases and sentences. Connotative meaning can be found in literary work including song lyrics. A song can also become a media to introduce social values. In this study, the researcher focus on connotative meaning using Chaer’s (2013) theory and sense a values of American people using theory by Khols (1984). The data source in this study are Justin Bieber’s song lyrics. This research was done by analyzing the data qualitatively. Techniques of data collection are done by downloading the song and the lyrics, listening the song, reading the lyrics and watching the videos. Data analysis was done by adapting Miles and Huberman’s theory (1984). The step of data analysis are: reduction of data, display of data, verification of data and conclusion. The result of the research describe words contain connotative meaning and values of American people. The total of data contain connotative meaning are sixteen, six words include in equality/egalitarianism Americans values, four words include in material/acquisitiveness American values, one word include in time and its control American values, three words include in change American values and one word include in self-help concept American values.

Abstract

The study focused on the written discourse, of the short story entitled No Witchcraft For Sale. The texts were pragmatically interpreted based on Searle’s theory of Speeh Act. This research discussed how intensions in uttering words were affected by preparatory conditions. The goals were to explain the three aspects of Speeh Act (locution, illocution and perlocution) and to describe the effects of preparatory conditions on the intensions. The data in this study were qualitative, because they were sentences taken from the short story. This is a literary research which used the descriptive analysis. Some intensions found in the utterances were declaring, thanking, asserting, claiming, commanding, congratulating, insisting, stating, telling, exclaiming, entreating, concluding, questioning, daring, asking, greeting, and blessing. These intensions were surely affected by the preparatory conditions. Contexts played important roles in conveying intentions.

Abstract

Teaching strategy and media are two important factors that influence the success of teaching and learning process. The implementation of Buzz group method that are integrated with audio visual media is one example of the effective teaching strategies that can be used to teach speaking. Students taking ESP class at UNARS had difficulties with speaking skill because of their limited vocabularies. Thus, this research tried to see how if Buzz group implemented with audio visual media implemented to the students to mprove their speaking skill. This CAR was held in one cycle. The result showed that the strategy was effective in improving the students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

Internationalization has been done in some Indonesian universities, including University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The program has opened a wider opportunity for foreign lecturers to share their experiences with the students within the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In addition to that, this program has also provided a greater chance for international students to enroll at the university. The number of International students in the University of Muhamadiyah Malang indeed has increased over the years. In regards to that, this present study identified challenges faced by the international students in the multicultural classroom. In doing so, the study involved six international students from two different countries; China and Thailand. The students studied at English Language Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Using questionnaires and a semi-structured interview, this study analyzed the result thematically. The research findings revealed five areas of challenges that the International students experienced in the university.

Abstract

This study disscused the irony in memes on Instagram. The memes were selected by selecting some accounts on Instagram. The aims of this study are to identify the types of irony in meme and to describe the meaning of irony used in memes on Instagram. In conducting this research, the methodology used is descriptive method by Creswell (2008). Theory of types of irony by Perrine (1966) and theory of meaning by Leech (1981) are used to do the analysis. The result of this research shows that there are twenty six verbal irony and four situational irony. Verbal irony in memes can attract the readers interest , and situational irony gives funny effects because of discrepancy between appearance and reality, or between expectation and fulfillment. Verbal irony and situational irony found on the Instagram are illustrated through the utterances in memes, and these memes have implicit meaning (non-literal meaning). How the readers understand the memes depends on their culture, time, and individual experience. Besides, the readers can get the meaning of memes if they compare the memes with the topic that has been viral their life.
