Abstract

This paper analyzes the roles that Agenda-setting and Framing theories play in influencing public perception and interpretation of social and political issues through the lens of mass media. Agenda-setting Theory describes the ability the news media has to shape the public agenda by creating a certain opinion or interpretation, which suggests that the media can shape public priorities and interpretation by determining which issues receive greater attention and prominence in news coverage. By consistently highlighting certain topics, the media increase their perceived importance among audiences. Framing theory further explains how a presentation (or frame) of information influences how the audience interprets and makes decisions about it, focusing on how something is said rather than just what is said, by emphasizing certain aspects, simplifying messages, and adding meaning to shape the public action and perception, especially the media, politics and government. Using theoretical analysis and relevant literature, this study explores how both theories complement each other in explaining media influence on public discourse. The paper argues that the media may not only direct public attention toward particular issues but also shape the opinions and interpretation attached to them, thereby playing a crucial role in the formation of public opinion and societal narratives.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital technologies and social media platforms has transformed the landscape of news production and dissemination in Nigeria, giving rise to the increasing prominence of citizen journalism. Citizen journalism enables ordinary individuals to gather, produce, and distribute news content outside the traditional structures of professional media institutions. While this development has broadened public participation in information sharing and democratic discourse, it has simultaneously intensified the challenge of information disorder, including misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. In the Nigerian context, where political tensions, ethno-religious sensitivities, and weak information verification systems often intersect, the proliferation of unverified citizen-generated content has significant implications for democratic stability. This paper examines the relationship between citizen journalism, information disorder, and democratic stability in Nigeria. It explores how the accessibility of smartphones, social networking platforms, and digital communication tools has empowered citizens to act as alternative information providers, especially during political events, elections, and crises. However, the absence of professional gatekeeping, editorial oversight, and fact-checking mechanisms frequently leads to the rapid circulation of inaccurate or manipulated information. Such information disorder can influence public perception, deepen political polarization, incite social tensions, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. The paper adopted secondary data to interrogates the dual role of citizen journalism as both a facilitator of participatory democracy and a potential driver of information instability. The paper argues that while citizen journalism has enhanced media pluralism and accountability, its unregulated nature poses risks to democratic processes when misinformation spreads unchecked. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for stronger media literacy, ethical digital practices, collaborative fact-checking initiatives, and policy frameworks that promote responsible citizen participation in the digital information ecosystem.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved into a transformative force in global journalism, reshaping newsroom practices, editorial workflows, and decision-making processes. This study examines the dynamics of AI-driven journalism in Nigeria, focusing on the challenges and prospects associated with its integration into newsroom decision-making. Drawing on secondary data from scholarly literature, industry reports, and media analyses, the paper situates AI as a socio-technical innovation that is redefining traditional gatekeeping roles and fostering a hybrid model of human–algorithm collaboration in news production. The paper identifies critical challenges hindering effective AI adoption, including infrastructural deficits, limited digital literacy among journalists, funding constraints, ethical concerns, and institutional resistance to technological change. It further highlights emerging risks related to algorithmic bias, misinformation amplification, editorial autonomy, and surveillance threats to press freedom. Anchored in Diffusion of Innovation and Technological Determinism theories, the paper argues that AI is not merely a supportive tool but a transformative agent influencing the structure and culture of Nigerian newsrooms. It concludes that sustainable integration of AI in journalism requires strategic investments in infrastructure, capacity building, and the development of ethical and regulatory frameworks. By critically examining both the constraints and potentials of AI-driven journalism, the paper contributes to ongoing discourse on the future of media practice in Nigeria and underscores the need for a balanced, human-centred approach to technological adoption in newsroom decision-making.

Abstract

This study critically evaluates the role of chatbot-powered applications in enhancing doctor–patient communication at a tertiary healthcare institution in Nigeria. Specifically, it examines the level of awareness and usage, the effectiveness of chatbot mediated communication in improving clarity, responsiveness, and accessibility of medical information, as well as the challenges associated with its implementation. A sample of 283 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula from a population of 958, comprising both healthcare professionals and patients, with 270 valid responses analyzed. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate a high level of awareness and moderate adoption of chatbot applications among respondents. The results further reveal that chatbot systems significantly improve communication efficiency by providing timely responses, simplifying medical instructions, and enhancing patient understanding. Additionally, the technology contributes to increased trust and engagement in healthcare interactions. However, several limitations were identified, including inadequate handling of complex medical inquiries, technical constraints, and concerns regarding data privacy and confidentiality. Despite these challenges, the overall impact of chatbot applications on healthcare communication is positive, suggesting their potential as complementary tools in clinical settings. The study recommends the integration of more advanced artificial intelligence features, continuous system optimization, enhanced data protection measures, and targeted training for both healthcare providers and patients. Policymakers are also encouraged to support the adoption of AI-driven communication systems to improve healthcare delivery outcomes. The study concludes that chatbot-powered applications can significantly transform doctor patient communication when effectively implemented and managed.

Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of population policy and its implications for sustainable economic development in Libya from an economic perspective. Libya’s demographic structure, characterized by a relatively young population and fluctuating growth patterns influenced by political instability, presents both opportunities and challenges for national development. The study explores how population policies influence key economic indicators such as labor supply, human capital development, public expenditure, and long-term economic productivity. Drawing on economic policy analysis, secondary data, and development frameworks, the paper analyzes the role of government institutions, economic planners, international organizations, and policy stakeholders in shaping population policy discourse in Libya. It highlights how economic considerations such as employment generation, resource allocation, and fiscal sustainability intersect with population dynamics in determining development outcomes. The paper argues that while policymakers often recognize the economic implications of population growth, the effectiveness of population policy in Libya is constrained by institutional weaknesses, limited data systems, and socio-political uncertainties. Furthermore, differing perceptions among stakeholders regarding population growth whether as a driver of economic strength or a burden on limited resources continue to shape policy debates. The findings suggest that successful population policy in Libya requires a balanced approach that integrates demographic objectives with economic planning, emphasizing investment in education, workforce development, and inclusive growth strategies. The paper concludes that strengthening policy coordination, improving data-driven decision-making, and aligning population strategies with economic development goals are essential for achieving sustainable development in Libya.

Abstract

Saint Yared, a 6th-century Ethiopian composer and theologian, is widely recognized for pioneering an indigenous system of musical notation through the melekket system and the Deggua antiphonary. However, his interdisciplinary contributions particularly the integration of music, astronomy, and philosophy remain underrepresented in global scholarship. This study seeks to re-evaluate Yared’s intellectual legacy by situating his work within broader discourses in world musicology and the history of ideas. Employing qualitative research methods, this study analyzes Ge’ez manuscripts, ethnomusicological recordings, and historical accounts through textual interpretation, comparative analysis, and thematic synthesis. It examines the cosmological dimensions of Deggua, the theological structure of Yared’s musical modes (Ge’ez, Ezel, and Araray), and the epistemological foundations of the melekket notation system. Particular attention is given to the influence of Aksumite traditions and the transmission of Byzantine thought through the Nine Saints. The findings reveal that Yared’s Deggua exhibits a structured alignment with liturgical seasons and celestial cycles, suggesting an embedded understanding of astronomical rhythms. His modal system reflects Trinitarian theological principles while also resonating with Neoplatonic concepts of cosmic harmony. Furthermore, the melekket notation system predates and conceptually parallels early European notational developments, challenging dominant Eurocentric narratives that center figures such as Guido d’Arezzo and Boethius.

Abstract

The emergence of new media has significantly transformed the landscape of journalism and public communication across the world. With the rise of digital technologies, social networking sites, blogs, online forums, and mobile communication devices, ordinary citizens now play active roles in gathering, producing, and disseminating news. This development has given birth to citizen journalism, a form of journalistic practice in which non-professionals participate directly in the reporting of events and issues affecting society. Unlike traditional journalism, which is often controlled by professional gatekeepers and institutional routines, citizen journalism thrives on immediacy, accessibility, interactivity, and user-generated content. The paper adopted quantitative method using survey and questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection. This paper examines how new media has facilitated the growth of citizen journalism, its contributions to democratic participation, information sharing, and social accountability, as well as the challenges associated with misinformation, lack of professionalism, ethical concerns, and weak regulatory mechanisms. The study argues that while citizen journalism has expanded the frontiers of freedom of expression and diversified news production, it also raises critical questions about credibility, verification, and responsibility in the digital age. The paper concludes that citizen journalism has grown considerably in Nigeria due to the widespread availability of digital technologies and social media platforms. These tools have enabled ordinary citizens to participate actively in news reporting, public debate, and civic engagement.

Abstract

Ethiopian applied universities have expanded rapidly over the past two decades, yet institutional leadership often undervalues scientific research, undermining innovation capacity and alignment with national development goals. This article argues that cultivating scientific leadership defined as leaders’ capacity to value, invest in, and strategically leverage science is a strategic imperative for Ethiopian applied universities in the 21st century. Drawing on literature from higher education leadership, science policy, and Ethiopian educational development, this conceptual analysis synthesizes empirical evidence from cited studies and policy documents to examine barriers and propose strategic pathways. The analysis reveals four principal findings: (1) leadership structures undervalue research despite STI policy commitments; (2) student–staff ratios averaging 75.9:1 constrain faculty research engagement; (3) institutional KPIs allocate only 8% weight to research metrics; and (4) industry linkages remain dominated by internships (95%) rather than R&D partnerships (20%). Cultivating scientific leadership requires phased governance reforms, aligned incentives, immersive leadership development, and cultural transformation. Policymakers and institutional leaders must prioritize research capacity building, restructure governance to elevate scientific expertise, and realign performance metrics to reward research productivity.
