Abstract

This study examined the role of journalist hangouts as spin doctors, focusing on how this gathering influence the framing of news stories in Nigeria, promote specific narratives, and affect public perception of media credibility. The specific objectives are to; assess the extent of influence these hangouts have on news framing, investigate their role in reinforcing narratives and agendas, and evaluate the implications of spin doctoring on public trust. Framing theory provides the theoretical framework, emphasising how media professionals shape narratives through their interactions. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative surveys and qualitative thematic analysis, to gather and interpret data from journalists. Findings reveal that journalist hangouts significantly impact news framing and agenda-setting, with a general agreement on their role in reinforcing media narratives. However, the direct effect of spin doctoring on public trust is less clear, although there is consensus that the public is aware of manipulation. The study concludes that while journalist hangouts is influential, ethical training, transparency in reporting, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives are essential to mitigate negative impacts and enhance media credibility. Recommendations include strengthening ethical training for journalists, promoting transparency in news reporting, and encouraging diverse viewpoints to ensure balanced media coverage.

Abstract

Injection drug abuse has become a major public health problem, the prevalence of which has increased significantly in the last decade. There are approximately 15.6 million people who inject drugs (PWID) worldwide and this may be an underestimate of the real problem as the use of injection drugs is an illegal and stigmatized practice, making data collection challenging. The study employed a cross-sectional design to assess drug abuse via injection and primary data was collected through structured interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science, employing descriptive statistics to identify patterns and associations while the qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed thematically to understand underlying behaviors and motivations. The cognitive-affective-pharmacogenic control theory was employed. Based on the findings, most of the respondents inject drugs because it provides a stronger high compare to other methods. The findings revealed that vein damage is the most common effect found among the people of high incidence of different drug uses through the injection method in Maiduguri Local Government Area of Borno State. Similarly, most of the respondents inject synthetic opioids and morphine. Also, most of the drug users are not receiving any support or treatment for drug addiction. The study concludes that most of the respondents are facing the problem of stigma and discrimination. Based on the findings, the study recommends that there should be educational outreach focused on sensitising and educating young people about the risks of drug use and promotes life skills through schools and community initiatives.

Abstract

The media portrayal of female celebrities in the Nigerian press can be analyzed through several lenses, including representation, stereotyping, and societal expectations. The paper examined media portrayal of female celebrities in the Nigerian press and the postulation of Feminist Theory was employed to interrogate the concept. The paper argues that with the rise of social media, the portrayal of female celebrities has become more direct and personal. Celebrities now have more control over how they present themselves to the public, but they also face more intense scrutiny. Social media platforms can amplify both praise and criticism, sometimes leading to a toxic environment where female celebrities are constantly under the microscope, not only for their careers but also for their personal choices. Nigerian media coverage is often influenced by the country’s strong cultural and religious values. Female celebrities, especially in more conservative parts of the country, may face criticism for behavior that challenges traditional expectations of women. For example, the media may criticize women who dress in a revealing way, engage in public displays of affection, or speak out against societal norms. The portrayal of female celebrities in Nigerian media is complex and multifaceted, balancing between admiration and scrutiny, empowerment and objectification, personal choice and public expectation. The media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of female celebrities, both positively and negatively. The paper concludes that many female figures in entertainment, sports, and politics are portrayed as role models, especially when they defy norms and achieve success in male-dominated fields. Women like Genevieve Nnaji, Tiwa Savage, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, for instance, are often celebrated for their professional achievements and contributions to society. This narrative promotes women's empowerment, independence, and leadership.

Abstract

Celebrity culture and journalism practice in Nigeria are closely intertwined, reflecting the growing influence of celebrities in shaping public opinion, culture, and media consumption. Nigerian celebrities are often products of the media, with platforms like social media, television, and magazines playing a central role in constructing their public identities. The media industry works to build and maintain celebrity brands, which in turn influences public perception and the celebrity's influence on society. The paper argues that celebrities in Nigeria have a strong presence on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, which amplify their voices and increase their visibility. This has changed the traditional way celebrities are covered by the media, with social media now serving as an important news source and space for celebrities to control their narratives. In Nigeria, entertainment journalism is a significant aspect of mainstream media. A considerable portion of news, especially in tabloids and online media outlets, focuses on celebrity gossip, lifestyle, and controversies. The rise of entertainment reporting has shifted some media outlets from hard news to a more sensational and celebrity-focused approach. The paper concludes that celebrity culture in Nigeria is a major influence on journalism, with entertainment and celebrity news playing a pivotal role in the media landscape. However, this trend comes with ethical challenges, such as maintaining accuracy, respecting privacy, and balancing sensationalism with responsible reporting.

Abstract

Pictures are regarded as a universal means of communication. A good picture needs no translator as it fixes the mind more readily. It has a great advantage over the written word; it does not need to be translated. Thus, the media play an important role in information dissemination process in addition to its entertainment, education and enlightenment function. The media interpret issues and event that may have great impact on people and societies. Media are used in communicating information especially in times of crises and uncertainties thus; creating awareness about happenings around the world. The paper argues that the media and pictorial reportage of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria plays a significant role in shaping public perception, awareness, and understanding of the crisis. Boko Haram, designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including Nigeria and the United States, has carried out numerous attacks leading to widespread displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of property. Media outlets must balance the need for impactful reporting with ethical concerns, such as respecting the dignity of victims and avoiding sensationalism or graphic depictions that may cause further trauma. With limited access for traditional media, social media platforms have become crucial in sharing real-time updates and personal accounts from affected regions. The paper concludes that the mass media have a lot of influence in the use of pictures in reporting Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria. In media practice, professional journalists play the role of a gate-keeper by gathering, analysing and disseminating news and information about people, events and issues in society.

Abstract

For journalists to function effectively, an atmosphere devoid of coercion and interference is needed, so as to afford them the opportunity and freedom to generate and distribute contents that are not biased, or value-laden. However, in recent times, journalists have had to contend with undue pressure from their employers (“pay masters”); this impede on fair and accurate reportage. The paper investigated the extent to which such interference in the operations of journalists, among others, could be a catalyst for alternative means of content dissemination, like citizen journalism among professional journalists in mainstream media. The Authoritarian and Democratic Participant Media theories were the theoretical foundations upon which this investigation was based. Using qualitative research method, 12 journalists (6 from Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri and 3 from Rize FM, and Crown FM, Warri respectively) were randomly selected. Interview was used as the instrument of data collection. Findings revealed that journalists were sometimes cowed to report issues that advance their owners' interest, and were also restricted from publishing content that may hinder their owners` interest. It also revealed that journalists sometimes engage in citizen journalism practice by circumventing such interference, and publishing through other social media platforms. The study recommended, among others, that journalists should be allowed to practice without pressure from their employers, and that they should stick to the ethics of their profession.

Abstract

The evolution of media consumption in Nigeria reflects the country’s dynamic cultural, technological, and economic landscape. Internet surfing and television viewing have become significant aspects of everyday life, influencing education, entertainment, communication, and socio-economic development. This appraisal explores trends, impacts, and challenges while offering recommendations for optimizing media consumption in Nigeria. An appraisal of internet surfing and television viewing in Nigeria reveals both opportunities and challenges. While these platforms have transformed education, communication, and entertainment, they also pose risks that require careful management. By addressing the digital divide, fostering local content, and promoting media literacy, Nigeria can harness the benefits of modern media while mitigating its drawbacks. The paper argues that the Internet has become a basic tool for trading, entertainment, and communication, as well as education, in the contemporary world. Nevertheless, despite its positive uses, the presence of additive behaviours among some Internet users has drawn the attention of the public and helping professionals. The paper concludes that the interplay between internet surfing and television viewing in Nigeria is shaping the cultural and economic fabric of the nation. While these media provide opportunities for growth, education, and connectivity, their unregulated use presents risks, especially to younger audiences. A collective effort from stakeholders, including the government, media industry, educators, and families can help harness the potential of these platforms while mitigating their challenges.
