Abstract

3-blade and 4-blade cloverleaf antennas operating at 2.45 GHz have been proposed. In order to achieve directional radiation pattern and high gain, reflector is incorporated to the proposed antennas. The proposed antennas have an average gain of 2.37 dBi while the proposed antennas with reflector have an average gain of 6.38 dBi. The dimension of the proposed antenna is compact enough to be mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Simulated and measured results are used to demonstrate the performance of the antenna. The simulated and measured return losses, together with the simulated radiation patterns, are presented and compared.

Abstract

The capability of the flexible substrate of the frequency selective surface (FSS) to filter out particular frequency is discussed in this paper. A new type of FSS are applied using flexible thin plastic substrate to enhance the performance of the conventional FSS that lacks of flexibility and cannot be used in bending surface. A simulation based investigation shows that the diameter or length of the square has a significant effect on the band-stop selective characteristic of the FSS. The frequency response of the band-stop are at 2.45GHz that drop at -10dB.

Abstract

Fibre Bragg Grating is an optical fibre that widely use as sensor to sense strain, temperature and pressure. The advantages of FBG sensor are it will not affected by electromagnetic interference which can improve the accuracy of the result and also can be wearable sensor. In this paper, Optisystem software tools are used to analyse the strain performance of FBG sensor for monitoring knee joint movement in rehabilitation process. Single mode FBG with original wavelength of 1550nm are used to get the accurate result because of less attenuation and absorption factor. This project also analysed the wavelength shifted when strain experienced by FBG change. The accuracy of sensor and method of delivering the result are taken into the account. The interrogator are used to display the wavelength shifted by the FBG when there is change in strain experienced by FBG. All of the proposed designed are tested by using simulation software and the wavelength shifted in the simulation are compared to the theoretical value that has been calculated in this project. The development of this system expected to improve the rehabilitation process towards a healthy life.

Abstract

This paper analyze the performance of partial observability in simultaneous localization and mapping(SLAM) problem. The study focuses mainly on the effect of having a decorrelation technique known as Covariance Inflation to the estimation. The matrix inversion will be the main element to be investigated through two conditions with respect to some defined environment namely as unstable partially observable SLAM and partially observable SLAM via matrix norm analysis. For assessment purposes, the Extended Kalman Filter estimation is referred as the estimator to understand how the conditions can influence the results. The simulation results depicted that, the matrix norm is able to determine the efficiency of estimation and is proportional to the uncertainties of the system.

Abstract

Contact force between catenary and pantograph of high speed train is a crucial system to deliver power to the train. The inconsistence force between them can cause the contact wire oscillate a lot and it can damage the mechanical structure of system and produce electric arc that can reduce the performance of system. This project proposes a single-input fuzzy logic controller (SIFLC) to control the contact force between the pantograph-catenary by implement Safe Experimentation Dynamics (SED) method to tune the SIFLC parameters. The essential feature of SIFLC is that it is model-free type controller design with less pre-defined variables as compared to other existing model-based controllers. The performance of the SIFLC is analyzed in terms of input tracking of contact force of pantograph-catenary and time response specifications. A simplified model of three degree of freedom (3-DOF) pantograph-catenary system is considered. In this study, the simulation result shows that the SIFLC successfully track the given contact force with less overshoot with percentage different of peak to peak response  from actual force 2% and fast response within 5.27s

Abstract

Our work focuses on the design and analysis of an interleaved Boost converter DC-DC with coupled and independent inductors in terms of ripples and power. An interleaving strategy is adopted to minimize the currents in the Boost components and consequently to miniaturize them. The command shift of the switch by the X.T value (X: shift coefficient 0<X<1 and T: period of the command signal), minimizes the ripple of the input current and output voltage and maximizes the power extracted from the photovoltaic system. The coupling technique of inductances of interleaved Boost, furthermore reduces the ripples of the input currents and further maximizes the power extracted from the photovoltaic panels. To determine the variation of the power extracted from the PV, according to the duty cycle D and the switches command shift X.T, the duty cycle, was manually varied (Similar to a MPPT command). For this we modeled, under MATLAB/Simulink, the photovoltaic system, the power interface (DC/DC Boost interleaved). Finally, a prototype of interleaved Boost converter with coupled inductors and a shifted control of the switches was realized. Experimental results have been proposed to validate the results of simulations.

Abstract

The Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA) is widely used in modern technology device. The design of bridge in the system is due to increase demand of power consumption and functionality. The bridge help to reduce power by separate the system into high bandwidth and low bandwidth. The goal of this paper is to design and implement the AMBA bridge into a SoC design which consists of a processor, RAM, ROM, watchdog and LED module. These peripherals are connected separately based on different bandwidth with a bridge as the medium. The result shown the bridge transfer a correct data from the ROM into the RAM. The experiment was carry out using Synopsys 2017 and Keil uVision.

Abstract

The implementation of a camera system with a field programmable gate array (FPGA) is an important step within research towards constructing a video processing architecture design based on FPGA. This paper presents the design and implementation of a camera system using the Nios II soft-core embedded processor from Altera. The proposed camera system is a flexible platform for the implementation of other systems such as image processing and video processing. The system architecture is designed using the Quartus II SOPC Builder System and implemented on an Altera DE2-70 development platform. The image or video is captured using a Terasic TRDB-D5M camera and stored into two different synchronous dynamic random access memories (SDRAM) using an SDRAM Controller. The specifications of the Terasic TRDB-D5M and SDRAM are examined to confirm that the recorded and stored data match. The results of this experiment show that the system is able to record and store data correctly into SDRAM. The data in the SDRAM correctly displays the recorded image on a VGA monitor.

Abstract

Non-occlusive blood pressure measurement method is developed to avoid the use of discontinuous and uncomfortable cuff-based methods. In this research, Pulse Transit Time (PTT) and Photoplethysmogram Intensity Ratio (PIR) is used to measure blood pressure. Two photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensors that are placed on the wrist and one of the finger joints both on the left hand is used to get the PTT and PIR. The name of the device is ARTSEN. During measurement, there is a measurement error caused by the hydrostatic effect when the device position is not inline with the heart. To minimize this error, this research proposes an automatic continuous blood pressure monitor. The device will conduct measurement only when the height of the device is inline with the heart. Accelerometer and gyroscope are used to detect the height of the device. There are 30 subjects that are involved in this research. To evaluate the performance of the device, there are two measurement conditions, during lying in the bed and sit down position. The blood pressure measurement is conducted using ARTSEN and sphygmomanometer (as the gold standard of blood pressure measurement). The average error of systolic blood pressure is 8 mmHg with standard deviation 5 mmHg, and average error of diastolic blood pressure is 8 mmHg with standard deviation 4 mmHg.

Abstract

With a rapid growth in semiconductor Industry, complex applications are being implemented using small size chips, with the use of Complementary Metal Oxide Semi-Conductors (CMOS). With the introduction of new Integrated Circuit (IC) technology, the speed of the circuits has been increased by around 30%. But it was observed that for every two years, the power dissipation of a circuit doubles. The main reason for this power dissipation is leakage currents in the circuit. To reduce these leakage currents, we can reduce the width of the device. In addition to this, we can use lector techniques that use Leakage Control Transistors (LCT) and High Threshold Leakage Control Transistors(HTLCT). In this paper, we present a circuit technique that uses 130 nano-meter CMOS VLSI circuits that use two extra transistors to mitigate the leakage currents.
