Abstract

In this paper, we propose a type of joint feature with geometric parameters and color moments to represent the speaking-mouth frames for image-based visual speech synthesis systems. Based on FDP around the mouth area, the geometric feature is obtained by computing Euclidean distances to describe the width of the speaking mouth, the height of the outer and inner lips and the distances between them. The color moment component in the joint feature is obtained by calculating the texture between the upper and lower inner lips to describe the visibility state of the teeth. Through analyzing the accordance between the teeth visibility and the components of RGB and HSV color space based on the samples separately, we discovered that green and blue components are good at describing the change of teeth visibility. The experiments show that the proposed joint feature can effectively provide the basis for categorizing the different speaking states especially at the sense of lip shapes and tooth visibility. The evaluation of clustering results is done by analyzing the derived parameters of the silhouette function.  The analyzing results prove that comparing with the geometric only and PCA, our proposed feature together with the shape and the local inner lip texture clues has better performance in improving the similarity between samples within the clusters. In the future, more expressive features with the shape and local texture information should be explored to increase the proportion of similar samples within the clusters to improve the descriptive ability of speaking mouths. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i2.2047

Abstract

Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) provides Marine Communications centre (MCC) with financial assistance surveyed for Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electromagnetic Interference (EMC/EMI) correlated troubles on industrial based fishing vessels less than twenty metres. The electrical condition should be provided for the vessels and it is the goal of the survey. By performing "electrical noise" measurement method the necessary data was obtained. Several autopilot systems are susceptible to High Frequency Single Side Band (HF SSB) transmitters due to the absence of electrical noise suppression scheme. The main objective of the survey is to analyse the better electrical noise suppression method for fishing vessels.

Abstract

Traffic control system play an important role to manage traffic congestion on the road especially during peak hours and peak seasons. One of the main challenges is to control the traffic when there are emergency cases at traffic light intersection especially peak hours. This could affect the route for emergency vehicles such as ambulance, fire brigade and police car to reach their destination. Due to the increase of traffic congestion during peak hours and peak seasons in Malaysia, there is a need for further evaluation of traffic control techniques. This paper reviewed and consolidated information on the different types of the existing traffic control system for road traffic management such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), wireless sensor network and image processing. This paper analysed and compared on the design, benefits and limitations of each technique. Through the reviews, this paper recommends the best traffic control technique for emergency vehicle that offers low price, low maintenance and can be used in various areas of applications.

Abstract

This research proposes new method to estimate spectral reflectances of Jati Belanda (Guazuma ulmifolia) leaf based on digital image color. Jati Belanda is a medicinal plant containing antioxidant compounds. Spectral reflectances can be used to estimate chemical compounds but the tools to obtain spectral reflectances is very expensive. To estimate the Jati Belanda leaf reflectance values based on digital image color, we used Fourier Transformation. The estimated spectral reflectances is evaluated using root mean square error (RMSE) and goodness-of-fit coefficient (GFC). According to the experiment, dataset used is 276 leaves of medicinal plants and the best polynomial transformation is 3rd order with RMSE value 4,83 and GFC value 0.96. The future work could estimate the amount of chemical compounds in Jati Belanda Leaf using estimated spectral reflectances. Estimated spectral reflectances is  an important part of estimated the amount of chemical compounds.

Abstract

In most B2Cs, such as 5-star Amazon, users’ rating capability is nonhomogeneous, which make it necessary to distinguish different users' profiles. Besides, recommender systems sometimes overlook differences among users’ judging power and simply recommend for the target users based on the preferences of his/her neighbors, leading to unsatisfactory recommendation performances. In this paper, we firstly propose a natural extension of the YZLM algorithm to get users’ judging power. Then we equally divide the users into some groups so that the intra-group users have close judging power. Through experiments on three benchmark datasets, namely MovieLens, Netflix and Amazon, we can find the interesting phenomenon which indicates a positive correlation between groups’ judging power and group’s recommendation performance. By analyzing this phenomenon in detail, we put forward some guidance to improve recommendation algorithm according to different users' judging power. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i7.2277

Abstract

There are many methods that have been studied by earlier researchers in order to detect the acoustic properties of Partial Discharge (PD) emitted by PD sources. One of the methods known as ultrasonic sensing on medium voltage Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable was adopted to detect partial discharges on commercial applications, usually by using Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors. This paper presents the processes of designing a PD sensor to detect the acoustic properties of the partial discharges on medium voltage XLPE cable. This PD sensor method works by detecting the partial discharges occurred at the joint of the cable which can act as an early warning device to help minimize the repair and maintenance costs of degrading cable. Result of the experiment shows the complete design of the prototype device, the device after fabrication and the functionality of the device. This design of the prototype can be beneficial for future uses in designing cost efficient and smaller sized PD detection devices. By positioning the sensor in horizontal position directly to the source of PD on the cable, the sensor will be able to detect acoustic properties of PD, by picking up the frequencies beyond 40 kHz. By varying the voltage applied values, a design of experiment (DOE) is carried out accordingly. Result of the experiment shows that the prototype device is functioning as expected, and hence this finding will be very useful to the consumers of power industries as the sensor device can serve as an alternative device to the commercialized PD sensing devices which are bulky and expensive.

Abstract

Solar power generation, which is regarded as an ideal environment-friendly manner for power generation, is getting more and more attention. When photovoltaic inverter is connected to the grid, the island effect is a special problem to confront. This paper briefly analyzes the island effects and makes a summary of both domestic and external research progress concerning islanding detection methods; the islanding detection methods can be divided into two classes: one is grid-side detection; the other is local detection. The local detection is generally divided into passive methods and active methods. The theory of advantages and disadvantages of those methods are briefly introduced in this paper. At the end of the paper, to deal with the disadvantages of those methods that are mentioned, it proposes the research direction for deeper study of islanding detection methods. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i1.4147

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a proposed scheme to enhance the performance of orthogonal space time block code (OSTBC) with four time slots and two antennas by combing OSTBC with random beamforming to can use it in the downlink transmission for a mobile system.  Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system has been recognized as one of the most promising techniques to achieve a good service and increase data rate in the next generation (4&5G) broadband wireless communications. So, we apply Space time block code (STBC) for MIMO-OFDM system with linear decoding.  Also, we perform STBC with beamforming for MIMO-OFDM system to improve the performance of a system. Simulation results show that the beamforming improves bit error rate (BER) performance of OSTBC and STBC-OFDM for different types of modulation and diversity.

Abstract

Cognitive Radio Network is the effective solution to the spectrum scarcity.  Dynamic spectrum access is a paradigm used to access the spectrum dynamically. A Markov Chain is a stochastic model describing a sequence of possible events in which probability of each event depends only on the state attained in the previous event. We model the dynamics of cognitive user with 2-D Markov chain. The resource distribution probability (RDP) verses addition/ elimination rate of the channels in the network is also plotted. The RDP verses utilization factor of the queue, which is the secondary user in the network, is also plotted. This plot helps to maintain the total arrival and departure rate based on the RDP. The base station of the network will use this relation to maintain the proper RDP for the devices. The dynamics of each cognitive user and its correlation with Markov Chain is an interesting approach. Here we considered the DSA at Base Station as a Markov chain and analyzed it. This analysis helps us to determine the behavior of the cognitive radio and also helps to find the fault in the cognitive devices.
