Abstract

Lighting systems provide mine workers improved visibility and contribute to improved safety, productivity, and morale. Lighting is critical to miners, since they depend heavily on visual cues to spot fall of ground, pinning & striking and slipping & tripping hazards. Most conventional systems of lighting are used in mines are extracting a lots of power and deal with major maintenance problems. Apart from the conventional grid-power lighting systems, additional emergency lighting system using green energy is mandatory in case of grid-power failure or in disaster situation of the underground mines. The luminous efficacy increases with switching frequency while providing eye comfort to user. Even though CFL has low power consumption for solar photovoltaic (SPV) power system, but CFL’s electrical requirements are not easily met by hard-switched inverters due to their higher switching losses at higher frequencies and preheat and ignition voltage of CFL results lower efficiency. This paper demands well suited high frequency inverter and a series interrupting type charge controller for illumination at remote areas. DOI:  http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i3.7069

Abstract

A high efficiency special transmission decelerator is designed by scheme design, structural design, optimization design, and return difference analysis and computer simulation. Small teeth difference transmission with the first level bevel gear pair and the second level beveloid gear pair is adopted as the form of transmission in the decelerating system. Great torque and big bending moment are available by transmission ratio formula deduction, force analysis and strength analysis. The particle swarm optimization and the genetic algorithm have been combined and the mutation operator optimization model has been proposed to optimize the design of decelerator. Then the transmission with large transmission ratio, high torque, high power and high precision will be realized in small space. This model has solved the problems of particle swarm optimization in mechanical design. For example, there are more variables, it is constrained and it is easily precocious. This model has provided the theoretical basis for the optimum design of microminiaturization gear system. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i10.3399

Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) affect our daily life through their emission from very common sources such as plants, building materials, paints, pesticides, and fossil fuel burning. The detection of VOCs at room temperature is a prime requirement. The graphene-based gas sensor has the potential to detect these VOC gases due to its attractive features such as high mobility and large surface area. In this work, a graphene-derivative is prepared as a sensing material in order to detect acetone. The thin film of graphene-derivative is prepared by a drop-cast method on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor followed by drying in the room environment conditions. The prepared graphene-derivative and thin films are characterized structurally and morphologically by standard microscopic techniques such as FESEM, EDX, and Raman spectroscopy. The electrical parameters such as mobility and resistivity are measured using Hall-effect measurements at room temperature. The response and recovery time of the graphene-derivative based 10 MHz QCM sensor are found to be 23 s and 20 s, respectively. This highly sensitive graphene-based gas sensor with good reversibility can be employed for human health and environment safety applications.

Abstract

This paper deals with a comparative analysis of various converter topologies for Power Factor Correction (PFC) in switched reluctance motor drives. Hence a power factor corrected converter required for obtaining the improved PQ at the AC mains for an inverter fed SRM drive has been analyzed. The SRM when fed by a DBR with a high value of DC-link capacitor results in highly distorted supply current and a poor power factor. A new bidirectional bridgeless LUO converter is used. The bridgeless LUO converter is a mixture of two dc-dc converters with one or two semiconductor switches in the current flowing path thereby reducing the current stresses in the active and passive switches. Circuit efficiency is further improved as compared to conventional Converters. LUO converters are new series of DC/DC Converters that have very low ripple of voltage and current and have output wave with high quality, high transfer voltage gain and high power density. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i3.7781

Abstract

Power losses of a novel high speed hydraulic on/off valve including four transitions during its switching between on and off states are analyzed and modeled using mathematical equations related to the geometric parameters of the on/off valve and hydraulic system parameters. The dynamic response of the on/off valve is investigated by using feedback of axial position of the spool of valve which is driven axially by a gerotor pump. A fuzzy logic parameter self-tuning PID controller is used to overcome the system nonlinearity and simulation result shows that the overshoot is decreased greatly than conventional PID controller. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i7.1604

Abstract

Increasing mobile data traffic due to the rise of both smartphones and tablets has led to high-capacity demand of mobile data network. To meet the ever-growing capacity demand and reduce the cost of mobile network components, Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) has emerged as a promising solution. In such network, the mobile operator’s Remote Radio Head (RRH) and Base Band Unit (BBU) are often separated and the connection between them has very tight timing and latency requirements imposed by Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This fronthaul connection is not yet provided by packet based network. To employ packet-based network for C-RAN fronthaul, the carried fronthaul traffic are needed to achieve the requirements of fronthaul streams. For this reason, the aim of this paper is focused on investigating and evaluating the feasibility of Ethernet networks for mobile fronthaul. The fronthaul requirements used to evaluate and investigate this network are maximum End to End (E2E) latency, Packet Loss Ratio (PLR) and Packet Delay Variation (PDV). The simulated results and numerical analysis confirm that the PDV and PLR of High Priority (HP) traffic in Ethernet network meet the requirements of mobile fronthaul using CPRI. However, the PDV of HP traffic meets the fronthaul network when the number of nodes in the Ethernet network is at most four. For Ethernet network, the number of nodes in the network limits the maximum separation distance between BBU and RRH (link length); for increasing the number of nodes, the link length decreases. Consequently, Radio over Ethernet (RoE) traffic should receive the priority and Quality of Service (QoS) HP can provide. On the other hand, Low Priority (LP) classes are not sensitive to QoS metrics and should be used for transporting time insensitive applications and services.

Abstract

As an emerging coverage problem in wireless sensor networks, sweep coverage which introducing mobile sensors to cover points of interest within certain time interval can satisfy monitoring request in some particular application scenarios with less number of nodes than the conventional static coverage approach. In this work, aiming to support dynamical POI coverage and data delivery simultaneously, a novel sweep coverage scheme, named VRPSC(Vehicle Routing Problem based Sweep Coverage), is proposed by modeling the minimum number of required sensors problem in sweep coverage as a Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). In VRPSC, an insertion algorithm is first introduced to create the initial scanning routes for POIs, and then the Simulated Annealing is employed to optimize these routes. The simulation results show that the VRPSC scheme achieves better performance than existing schemes. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i4.2380

Abstract

This paper addresses the energy efficiency (EE) based user-association problem in cloud radio-access network. In specific, a low-complexity 2-stage iterative algorithm is developed for this purpose by jointly employing the coordinated multi-point (CoMP) and user-clustering techniques. The first stage of the algorithm applies a greedy search to form user-cluster and activate corresponded remote radio heads (RRHs) for CoMP transmission, only an RRH j with good channel gain could be included in the serving cluster of user k. Next, in the second stage, a re-clustering procedure is utilized to mitigate inter-cluster interference (ICI) and assign optimal power for scheduled users. Our obtained findings confirm that the transmit power, RRH density, and the number of users served by these RRHs can significantly affect the EE. Also, the results show that under certain system settings the proposed scheme can enhance the EE by almost 39.6% compared to conventional CoMP without user clustering technique.
