Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari peranan suhu pemasakan dan konsentrasi HCI sebagai katalis dalam larutan pemasak terhadap sifat pulp acetosolv kayu Leda (Eucalyptus deglupta Bl.) yang dipucatkan. Pembuatan pulp dilakukan melalui proses acetosolv dengan menggunakan larutan pemasak asam asetat dan katalis HCI, dipucatkan dengan bahan pemucat peroksida (P) dun klordioksida (D) dalam tahapan pemucatan PDPD.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa suhu pemasakan mempengaruhi rendemen pulp, bilangan kappa dan sifat fisis-mekanis pulp. Konsentrasi HCI sebagai katalis secara nyata mempengaruhi rendemen setelah pencucian dengan aseton 50% dan derajat kecerahan.Kenaikan suhu pemasakan dan konsentrasi katalis cenderung menurunkan rendemen pulp mentah yang tidak lolos saringan. Proses delignifikasi cenderung meningkat dengan naiknya suhu pemasakan dan konsentrasi katalis, tetapi juga menyebabkan bertambahnya lignin terkondensasi. Penggunaan katalis HCl sebanyak 1 % pada suhu pemasakan pulp 160°C dan 170°C cenderung memberikan sifat fisis pulp yang lebih baik. Suhu pemasakan 170°C juga menaikkan padatan terlarut dalam aseton limbah. Pembuatan pulp acetosolv dari kayu leda yang menghasilkan rendemen dan sifat pulp yang terbaik diperoleh dari pemasakan pada suhu l60°C dan konsentrasi HCl I%. Untuk meningkatkan derajat kecerahan pulp acetosolv yang dapat memenuhi persyaratan, masih perlu dikaji teknik pemucatan lebin lanjut.

Abstract

Jelutung wood (Dyera spp ­ Apocynaceae) has been the main source of pencil slat in Indonesia for more than 30 years. It can easily be peeled with pencil sharpener specially  designed for children usage. However the supply of jelutung wood is no longer sufficient to meet the rising demand for pencil slat. It is therefore necessary to search  for substitute.Previous study with jelutung  and other wood species indicated that the peelability of wood depend not only on wood density but also on anatomical structure. The occurrence of closely spaced parenchyma lines in jelutung enhances the ease of wood to be peeled. The closely spaced parenchyma lines acted as if they were chopped lines inside the wood tissue  that made the wood peelable.  So the prospective substitute should have similar parenchyma pattern with jelutung 's.Nyatoh  (Palaquium spp. ­ Sapotaceae) is known to have closely spaced parenchyma bands similar to that  of jelutung's.  The purpose of the present study is to find out whether or not nyatoh wood could be used for pencil slat, as a substitute for jelutung wood in pencil production.Sample of nyatoh  wood (Palaquium obtusifolium Burck.) used in this experiment was obtained from Sulawesi. The sample was processed into pencil at PT Staedtler Indonesian factory in Serang, using 28 grade graphite lead.  The peelability test  were assisted by primary school student class II, llI, and IV, using simple rotary pencil sharpener. Pencils made of jelutung  were  used as controls. An independent test was used to analyze whether or not nyatoh wood is easy to be peeled,  and whether or not the pee/ability depend on the age of the student and on the wood species  used.  The anatomical structure and the density  of the wood sample were also observed.The result  of experiment  indicated  that nyatoh wood with sample density ranges from 0.40 ­ 0.57 gr/cm3 was easily peeled with pencil sharpener,  either by primary school student class IV, and by class II as well. Further test also indicated  that nyatoh had the same peelability with jelutung wood. So it is possible to use nyatoh wood as jelutung substitute  in pencil  production. Moreover,  the colour of nyatoh is already reddish brown so it does not need staining with colour substance as usually being done to jelutung. Key word:  Nyatoh,  Palaquiurn  obtusifoliurn, wood anatomy, peelability,  pencil slat.

Abstract

Most of the Indonesian wood species exhibit a wide differences in treatability. This may reduce effectiveness in loading several wood species simultaneously. This study investigated treatability of 41   wood  species   through  full-cell   process   using  CCB  (copper-chrome-boron)  preservatives.Representative wood samples, measuring 5 cm wide, 5 cm thick and I 00 cm long were preparedfrom each species and then remain to reach the air-dry condition.  Pressures imposed during the process were consisted of initial and final vacuum al 500 mm Hg for  15 minutes, and a hydraulicpressure of 10 atmospheresfor 60 minutes.The results revealed that 20 of the study species were classified easy, I 2 species were moderate, 5 species were difficult, and the remaining 4 species were very difficult.  Wood species within the class could be treated simultaneously. Results also indicated that there were great variations of chemical retention within the same class of penetration.

Abstract

Development of  plywood  industries  should not  be rated from  the  increase of ply mill  number  and  the production aspects alone, but  there is other  indicators  that need be taken  into consideration  such as productivity  and efficiency factors. High productivity and  efficiency   would  bring more profit to  the  company and save the existing  national  resources.In  this report  some  results  of productivity  analysis  is presented based on ratio of actual production   over break even point (BEP) production    level, and efficiency  analysis  is presented   based  on  ration  of actual production  over production capacity  level,   ratio of  output value  over input  value, and added  value of  logs processed  into  plywood  criteria.Based  on  criteria  as  mentioned   above  it  can  be  concluded   that  all six  visited  plymills on  the average have fairly high productivity and efficiency, but utilization rate of existing production capacity is still low.  The average ratio of actual production over BEP production is 2.48  with  range 1.35 ­ 3.28  (coefficient   of variation 29 %),  the average ratio of actual production   over production   capacity  is 0.64  with  range 0.25 ­ 0.91 (coefficient   of  variation  50  %),  the average ratio of output value over input  value is 1.27 with  range 1.07­1.38  (coefficient   of  variation  10 %),  while  the average of added value of  logs to plywood  is 70 % with  range 17 % -112  % (coefficient   of  variation  21  %).

Abstract

White meranti and yellow meranti wood have the same characteristics in texture, color and specific gravity and have the same class in durability and strength, mean while the export tax of white meranti is higher than yellow meranti. To differentiate.between those wood species in the field, it has been done a spot test methode, using 5 % ferric amonium sulphate. the results showed that yellow meranti wood responded positively (indicated black spots), while white meranti responded negatively.

Abstract

A atucly of the practice of in(rastiucture (railroads)construction in wamp forest areasof South Sumatra was carried out  in 1989. The intention is to find  various aspects of  field operations in that specific area and their poaible  con- aequencea.It  ill found that aupports of rails in swamp forest areas are consisted of either 4 or 5 layers of logs. In constructing those railroads, logs used vary from 140 to 177 cu.m/km  with an averageof 166 cu.m/km.   Including the value of this material into calculationgives the total construction cost of railroadto the amount of around Rp 16.5 million per km.Soil diatyrbance iB found to be minimal due to narrow railroadclearingand /'lat topography. Problema identified in the field are the uceaive   use of logs for railroad construction and large amount of othe- logs scattered and abandon- ed around railroadsand manual skidding (kuda-kuda) roads.  It  seems that there is a strong need for the government and conceaionaires to seriously pay  attention and create better instructions and actions in managingthose valuable swamp (orats  on a sustainable basis.

Abstract

Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is an alternative food sources from forest. Porang grows under forest canopy and potentially developed to improve food security. Naturally harvested porang contains high oxalate and less glucomannan. This paper observes possible quality improvement of porang flour in term of whiteness and glucomannan content. Porang collected from Nganjuk, East Java was quality tested and mixed with natrium bisulfite then rinse in ethanol repetitively. Results showed that the addition of sodium bisulfite improved the whiteness of porang flour for about 6.59%. Ethanol dehydration proces was able to improve glucomannan content from 12.86% to 38.11%. Fe and Ca content of mixed porang flour showed no significant difference. Porang flour from Nganjuk contained of 1,6-Anhydro- Beta-D-Glucopyranose; 1,2,3,4-Cyclopentanetetrol,(1.alpha., 2.beta., 3.beta., 4.alpha.); cyclopropyl carbinol; aceticacid(CAS)ethylicacid; and hexadecanoic acid.

Abstract

Pohon wangi (Melaleuca bracteata F. Muell.) termasuk famili Myrtaceae banyak tumbuh di negara bagian Queensland (Australia), merupakan salah satu pohon penghasil minyak atsiri. Di Indonesia jenis ini dikenal dengan nama “daun wangi” tetapi masyarakat belum banyak mengenal baik bentuk pohon maupun manfaatnya, sehingga potensi dan manfaatnya belum tergali secara optimal. Di Australia jenis ini terkenal dengan nama Black Ti-tree, River Ti-tree, atau Black Tea-tree. Minyak ini dapat digunakan sebagai campuran dalam industri wangi-wangian dan atraktan karena mengandung methyl eugenol lebih dari 70%, sehingga mempunyai bau yang lebih menyengat dibanding methyl eugenol yang dijual di pasar. Terkait dengan hal tersebut, tulisan ini menyajikan hasil pencermatan pendahuluan cara penyulingan daun pohon wangi serta sifat minyaknya. Penyulingan daun tersebut menggunakan dengan dua cara yaitu sistem rebus dan sistem kukus. Minyak atsiri hasil penyulingan dianalisa rendemen dan sifat fisiko kimianya. rendemen minyak berkisar 2,02 - 2,12%; bobot jenis 1,0271 - 1,0361; indeks bias 1,5196 - 1,5216; bilangan asam 0,57 - 0,92; bilangan ester 17,77 - 15,72 dan methyl eugenol merupakan komponen utama minyak. Perbedaan cara penyulingan (rebus dan kukus) tidak mempengaruhi rendemen dan sifat fisiko kimia minyak. Cara rebus menghasilkan minyak atsiri dengan kandungan methyl eugenol (78%) lebih tinggi daripada cara kukus (50%).

Abstract

Penelitian sifat fisis dan mekanis tujuh jenis kayu yang berasal dari kebun percobaan Bogor. telah dilakukan di Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Hasil Hulan dan Sosial Ekonomi Kehutanan Bogor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kayumanis mempunyai berat jenis tertinggi. sedangkan terendah terdapat pada surian bawang. Bila dilihat dari nilai penyusutan tangensialnya, maka ketujuh jenis kayu yang diteliti tergolong mempunyai penyusutan sedang sampai tinggi, kecuali perupuk yang tergolong rendah, sehingga dalam pengeringannya perlu diperlakukan hati-hati. Kayu manis tergolong kelas kuat II. sedangkan enam jenis kayu lainnya tergolong kelas kuat III-II. Dari data yang ada. maka ke tujuh kayu yang diteliti dapat digunakan sebagai bahan konstruksi ringan, mebel dan kusen.
