Abstract

The thermal oil system is one type of heater that widely used on ships. The system is an important system used to heat fuel that will be used for the operation of the main engine, auxiliary engine, and boiler. This system has been installed on 17500 LTDW Product Oil Tanker, MT. Parigi, but not yet tested so that it does not know whether the system is able or not to transfer heat from heating equipment (boiler and economizer) to each fuel tank in accordance with the desired value. Therefore, this research performs an engineering evaluation in term of heat transfer analysis to ensure that the heat transfer process of thermal oil from heating equipment to the fuel tanks is already meeting the required temperature or not. This analysis is done by using thermodynamic equation, namely heat balance equation and heat loss equation. The result shows that the heat transfer of thermal oil to each fuel tank corresponds to the desired value, namely 180oC for the thermal oil inlet temperature to each fuel tank and 140oC for the thermal oil re-enter temperature to the heating equipment.

Abstract

The depletion of world energy reserves and the increasing levels of environmental pollution, increase human creativity. Discoveries on environmentally friendly renewable energy-making technologies are increasingly widespread. One of them is the manufacture and utilization of biogas as an alternative fuel. Biogas is one of renewable energy sources with bio gas production process from organic material like cattle dung with the help of bacteria decomposers. By conducting a literature study on biogas utilization and calculation analysis, biogas application was applied as an outboard fuel engine with 10 horse power in a boat capable of crossing for 10 minutes with a capacity of 1 to 2 passengers, such as private boats owned by coastal communities or boats used by traders on floating markets in the Kalimantan area.

Abstract

CFD simulations were conducted to study the effects of a hydrofoil and its relative placement in the longitudinal direction on the total resistance of a mono-foil hysucat (hydrofoil supported catamaran). Three foil positions were considered: (i) precisely below the vessel’s center of gravity, (ii) 3 chord-lengths aft from position 1 and (iii) 6 chord-lengths aft from position 1. At relatively low speed (volumetric Froude number FnV < 1.8), the hydrofoil results in an increase of the total resistance of the hysucat (up to 4.43%). At relatively high speed (FnV > 1.8), the hydrofoil results in a decrease of the total resistance (up to 34.86%). The resistance coefficient first increases, takes a maximum value and then decreases with increasing Froude number. The maximum value is observed at FnV approximately equal to 1.4 (or Fn approximately equal to 0.5), consistent with previous observations. The most optimum foil placement is that precisely below the center of gravity of the vessel.
