Abstract

This paper explores how Chinese New Zealanders participate in lifestyle politics. It also uses Mark Haugaard’s four dimensions of power framework to explore how power operates when they participate in lifestyle politics. Based on an interpretive analysis of 38 Chinese New Zealanders’ in-depth interviews, I found that interviewees’ paths to and motivations for lifestyle politics varied. They constructed and disclosed unique political identities through their participation. Additionally, they all experienced the first, second, third, and fourth dimensions of power, even though they participated in lifestyle politics for various reasons. Their interpretations of power also varied. This study deepens the understanding of how power and politics are embedded in everyday life.

Abstract

In South Africa, despite what appears to be a perfectly designed political system underpinned by the separation of powers, there seemingly is a lack of accountability of public officials that has its roots in the proportional representation (PR) electoral system. This study postulates that this has proven not to be effective in terms of accountability and oversight as far as the implementation of Chapter 13 of NDP and the broader objectives of South Africa’s development framework. The infamous Nkandla Projects and Parliamentary Inquiry into Eskom make for a worthy case study in this endeavour for at least one particular reason, these two case studies and all that came to encompass them extended over period adequately lengthy enough to check the consistency of Parliament and how South Africa’s electoral system leads to and breeds systemic political corruption that Parliament cannot decisively address and deal with. Furthermore, this study will argue how the Electoral Amendment Bill (B1-2022) could be effective in improving how MPs are delegated, held accountable and increasing state capacity through Parliamentary oversight.

Abstract

It is no question that national security is an important aspect of any country’s existence in the world. It is important that a country has a vital foundation to increase the nation’s progress, resilience against problems and an effective preparedness against any situation that may arise in the future. The focus of discussion in this paper is to compare the military strength of Indonesia and Thailand as both countries in Southeast Asia and ASEAN and a comparison of their national security objectives. This paper uses qualitative research methods to research the equipment, strength, soft and hard factors that impact the strength of Thailand and Indonesia’s military strength and National security policies which will be analyzed descriptively and explanatively. It is no question that Thailand and Indonesia have differing national strategies considering that the geographical characteristic of each country is quite vastly different with differing economical capabilities, internal challenges, military equipment. Both countries try to match their national strategies with their military’s capabilities. Where their differences in national security policy end in between the two countries is the continued cooperation between the two countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries using integrated Military and Non-Military components (economy, culture, identity) in order to safeguard, protect and maintain their and other countries in ASEAN’s national interests.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implications of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on economic deglobalization and trade relations between the United States and Russia. In the context of increasing trade barriers and economic sanctions, both countries face reduced trade, supply chain disruptions, and reduced investment. To reduce risks to economic growth, market diversification can be one solution. Geopolitical tensions in Ukraine have deglobalized the global economy driven by tensions in the economic relations between the United States and Russia. This can be seen in trade restrictions, supply chain disruptions, and investment. Furthermore, the two countries responded by diversifying their markets by seeking new trading partners, expanding trade networks, and developing alternative sectors in other regions such as Asia, North America, and Africa. The United States and Russia can also strengthen economic resistance and create new opportunities amidst conditions of global uncertainty

Abstract

This research investigates the role of communication strategies and their application in the context of the "Village Film Festival" in 2023, themed "Smoky Kitchen," with the aim of promoting community products, enhancing social welfare, and fostering unity amidst global challenges and competition. The methodology thoroughly analyzes communication strategy formulation, emphasizing the significance of considering temporal and spatial factors for effectiveness. Effective communication, characterized by clear and appropriate messaging, is key to achieving these objectives. The primary research focus is on the "Village Film Festival," particularly the creation and competition of short documentary drama (docudrama) films by the local community, serving as a medium for communication and persuasion through audio-visual storytelling. The study reveals that communication strategies play a pivotal role in achieving these goals, with the festival successfully disseminating messages and engaging viewers to contemplate and interact with the content. As a suggestion, future endeavors in public policy and communication should actively employ communication strategies, leveraging audio-visual storytelling, such as docudrama films, to address global challenges, enhance product quality, and promote community cohesion, drawing insights from this research as a noteworthy case study demonstrating their potential impact.

Abstract

In the Coral Triangle region, located in Southwest Papua, over 75% of the world's coral reef species are found. Soop Island, a small island in this region, holds significant potential due to its proximity to Sorong City, expansive white sandy beaches, and historical relics such as caves and Japanese bunkers. Nevertheless, the current exploitation of coastal resources is unsustainable. Therefore, a comprehensive and holistic approach through the Social-Ecological System (SES) is essential. Pertamina EP Papua Field, a company operating in the Papua region, has implemented a Coral Reef Conservation Program based on community empowerment. The aim of this study is to identify the potential of coral reefs within the framework of conservation and ecotourism development, involving active community participation on Soop Island. The Coral Reef Conservation Program was initially conducted in 2021 using the Spider Web method. During the 2022-2023 period, in collaboration with the Coral Reef Conservation Community (Terumbu Karang Lestari), the program successfully rehabilitated 1,348 coral reef fragments covering an area of 150 square meters in a relatively short timeframe. Furthermore, these conservation efforts have facilitated sustainable ecotourism development, providing economic opportunities for local residents and supporting the growth of the tourism sector in the region.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Indonesia's economic recovery efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic using the conceptual framework of the Interdependence theory. Qualitative research methods are employed to delve into the adaptive decision-making processes within Indonesia's economic policies. The findings highlight the interdependent steps taken in Indonesia's economic policies and assess the effectiveness of JICA's financial assistance in facilitating a gradual economic recovery. The study depicts the crucial role of JICA as a catalyst for interdependent changes, supporting Indonesia's economic recovery efforts amid the challenges posed by COVID-19. The implications of this research provide insights for decision-makers, emphasizing the effectiveness of interdependent decision-making in crisis management. Understanding the role of external assistance, such as JICA's support, becomes crucial for designing adaptive and effective economic recovery strategies. Overall, this research contributes to a nuanced understanding of Indonesia's economic response to the pandemic, offering practical insights for future crisis management and recovery efforts within the context of Interdependence theory.
