Abstract

This paper explores the complexities of motherhood and identity in Nigerian literature through a comparative analysis of Efuru by Flora Nwapa and The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta. Using textual analysis and drawing from Intersectional Feminism and Identity Negotiation Theory, the study examines how gender, race, and class intersect to shape women’s identity. Both novels portray motherhood as a layered identity shaped by societal expectations. In Efuru, the protagonist asserts her individuality despite cultural norms that prioritize maternal roles. In contrast, The Joys of Motherhood reveals how the protagonist Nnu Ego’s identity is reduced to motherhood alone. The findings suggest that while motherhood is revered, it often restricts women’s agency, forcing them to constantly negotiate their identities.

Abstract

This study examines the management of the English Club extracurricular program at MTs Darul Ulum, recognizing its growing importance as a complementary space for developing twenty-first-century English proficiency. Although English Clubs are widely acknowledged in the literature as effective platforms for communicative practice, motivation building, and confidence enhancement, research focusing on their managerial processes—particularly in Islamic secondary schools—remains limited. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how the English Club is managed, what challenges are encountered, and what solutions are implemented within the framework of Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling (POAC). A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with the supervising teacher, observations of club activities, and analysis of program documents. The findings indicate that the English Club operates with enthusiasm but lacks structured planning, formal organizational roles, adequate facilities, and systematic evaluation procedures. Major challenges include overcrowded membership, limited teaching personnel, uneven student motivation, and restricted institutional support. Despite these constraints, the supervisor employs several adaptive strategies such as activity-based learning, peer-assisted facilitation, and attempts to build external partnerships. The study concludes that strengthening managerial components—particularly planning, organizing, and evaluation—is essential for enhancing the sustainability and pedagogical impact of the English Club. These findings provide practical implications for schools seeking to improve extracurricular language programs in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

This study analyzes leadership values and cultural identity in the animated film Moana (2016) through the main characters. Using qualitative descriptive research, it explores how leadership and cultural identity are depicted in character development, dialogue, narrative, and visuals. The primary data source is the film, focusing on Moana, Maui, and Chief Tui, who represent leadership practices and cultural meanings. Data were collected through repeated viewing of the film, selecting relevant scenes and dialogues, and analyzed with thematic analysis. The findings reveal that leadership in Moana is portrayed as a value-based, culturally grounded process rather than authority. Moana demonstrates leadership values such as responsibility, courage, perseverance, empathy, and commitment to community. Leadership is deeply connected to Polynesian traditions and values, showing the influence of culture and nature. The contrasting portrayals of Maui and Chief Tui highlight leadership as a dynamic, transformative process that involves balancing tradition and change. The study concludes that Moana promotes ethical leadership and cultural awareness.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the factors contributing to the reluctance of seventh-semester students in the English Study Program at the University of Pasir Pengaraian to speak English. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 16 students who demonstrated a high tendency of reluctance in speaking English. The questionnaire was developed using a Likert scale and covered five main aspects: lack of confidence, shyness, anxiety, lack of motivation, and fear of making mistakes. Interviews were conducted to support and clarify the quantitative findings. The results revealed that most students experience psychological and linguistic barriers that affect their confidence in speaking. The most dominant factors include fear of making mistakes, concern over negative judgment from classmates, and limited vocabulary and pronunciation skills. These findings indicate the necessity for more supportive and interactive teaching approaches that foster speaking confidence. This research is expected to contribute to the development of more effective English language teaching strategies and serve as a reference for future researchers in examining speaking reluctance in the context of higher education

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning strategy in improving students’ learning outcomes in Social Science classes at MTs Nur Hadi Muara Jawa. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, involving an experimental group taught using Discovery Learning and a control group taught using conventional instructional methods. The population consisted of all Social Science students at MTs Nur Hadi Muara Jawa, with two classes selected as research samples through purposive sampling. Data were collected using achievement tests and classroom observation instruments. The results revealed that students in the experimental group achieved higher post-test scores and demonstrated greater classroom engagement compared to those in the control group. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two groups. These findings suggest that Discovery Learning is an effective instructional strategy for enhancing both cognitive achievement and active participation in Social Science learning. The study recommends the implementation of Discovery Learning to promote student-centered learning in madrasah contexts and encourages further research involving broader samples and additional learning variables.

Abstract

This study aims to develop PhET-based student worksheets (LKPD) and examine their effectiveness in improving students’ cognitive learning outcomes at MTs Nur Hadi Muara Jawa. The research employed a research and development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of the study were MTs students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and cognitive achievement tests administered before and after the implementation of the worksheets. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis to measure learning gains. The findings indicate that the PhET-based LKPD are valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ cognitive performance, particularly in understanding abstract scientific concepts. The integration of interactive simulations encourages active learning, inquiry processes, and conceptual understanding. Therefore, PhET-based student worksheets can serve as an effective instructional material to support digital-based science learning in secondary education.

Abstract

The Pancasila Student Profile serves as a fundamental framework in Indonesian education aimed at developing students’ character, competence, and national identity in response to global challenges. This study examines the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile in strengthening student character development at MTs Nur Hadi Muara Jawa, an Islamic junior secondary school. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with school leaders and teachers, and document analysis of curriculum plans, school programs, and institutional policies. The findings indicate that the integration of the Pancasila Student Profile into curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities has positively influenced students’ religious values, independence, cooperation, critical thinking, creativity, and global awareness. The madrasah context, which integrates Islamic values with national ideology, provides a supportive environment for internalizing Pancasila principles. However, challenges remain, particularly related to teacher readiness, program consistency, and evaluation mechanisms. The study concludes that strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile in madrasah education is effective in fostering holistic student character, provided that continuous teacher professional development and institutional support are maintained.
