Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is the choice of analysis theory offering the effective tools to analyse the language difficulties and vagueness. One of the systemic analysis tools is clause complex which can simplify the structural and grammatical meanings of the analysed texts through the use of taxis systems and logico-semantic relations (Sagheer Eid, 2016). The proposed study is aimed at analysing systemic functional analysis of clause complex realised in a short story adopting Hallidayan linguistics perspective. The short story is taken from the collection of short stories entitled “The Whispering Knights” by Clare West. From the aforementioned short stories collection, the writers take a short story entitled “The Witch’s Brew” written by Penelope Lively. By means of a descriptive study under Systemic Functional Linguistics theory as suggested by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014), the writers employ the analysis of taxis systems which cover elaboration, extension, and enhancement. Besides, logico-semantic relation is also analysed which covers projection and expansion. The findings reveal that there are 158 clause complexes which consist of 58 clause complexes of parataxis which are realized 37%, and 40 clause complexes of hypotaxis which are realised 25.3%. In conclusion, the short story is written by the dominant of parataxis then hypotaxis constructions.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Despite the continuous debate regarding whether it is necessary to teach grammar explicitly or implicitly in the language classroom, the debaters could agree that grammar awareness is significant for language learners. Many methods have been conducted by language teachers or researchers to promote language learners’ grammar awareness, and one of them is through ideally designed task activities. Grammar awareness is a particular skill in language learning which can be acquired which is quite different from other language skills which deal with language productions or language comprehensions. Grammar awareness is a skill which could allow its possessor to identify the structure of a language rather than the meaning. Therefore, the activities to promote this skill should be logically different from activities to promote either production skills or comprehension skills. The purpose of this paper is to provide several alternatives, especially classroom activities, to promote grammar awareness which can be used effectively.  Keywords: grammar awareness, activities, language, explicitly, implicitly

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal the type of language learning strategies dominantly used by the learners and the least type of learning strategies used by the learners. There were 10 students who were taken as the sample of participants. They are students who officially enrolled in Academic Reading Class in the second semester of English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2016/2017. Questionnaire consisting of 40 statements was distributed for data collection which in turn were analyzed by using mean score calculation. The analysis of the data revealed that the mean score of metacognitive learning style was 4.0 which indicated that this type of learning strategy fell into the highest frequency used by the students. Meanwhile, the average score for cognitive strategies was 3.7 in which it is categorized as the second rank of the learning strategy mostly used by the learners. The analysis toward compensation strategy resulted 3.5 for the mean score, and the average score for affective and social strategy reached average at 3.1 and 3.0 respectively.
