Abstract

This study is aimed at having critical analysis in teaching English as a foreign language which generally does not give much attention in teaching local culture especially intercultural communication. Promoting the character building as character education in the teaching learning process (TLP) is one of the instructional objectives. Commonly, the current belief in English TLP is only inserting foreign cultural values which do not always match with our own culture. Moreover, the exits activity and material do not represent character education. Here, for instance, there is an absence of explicit statements about character aspects that are needed to be included in students' activities. Dealing with the main learning objective (LO) of our national education, the current belief should be changed by integrating our local culture (Indonesian) in English TLP to achieve national education goals in promoting character building. It is mainly purposed to maintain, encourage and build spirit of nationalism individually or nationally. Keywords: character building, local culture, teaching English

Abstract

Nowadays, English is regarded as a crucial language to master, particularly for communicative competence. One of many approaches to help learners to master English is Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). CLT has been recognized as the most common approach to promoting communicative competence. Moreover, it has been implemented by many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) countries involved in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the CLT implementation as performed by an EFL teacher in teaching spoken language at Secondary School. To achieve the aim, this study used a descriptive case study as a research design. The participant of the study was an EFL teacher who implements CLT in teaching spoken language. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, and document analysis. The result of the data collection was analyzed by using Qualitative Data Analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The findings revealed that the CLT implementation has been performed by an EFL teacher through three components. Those are seen from the teacher’s way of deciding the material, being a facilitator in the teaching-learning process, and applying teaching-learning strategies. This research indicates that the use of the CLT approach could facilitate learners to develop communicative competence skills. Keywords: Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Spoken Language.

Abstract

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Covid-19 a pandemic, the education system has been transformed into an online teaching and learning system. This is a big challenge for teachers to teach at home through online media, especially for English teachers in teaching listening online. As we know listening skill is one of the most important English skills for students. This research aims to analyze the teachers’ problems in teaching listening online at Komputama Vocational High School in Jeruklegi, Cilacap. This research is a descriptive and qualitative research. The data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The result of this research showed there were three problems faced by the teacher: the teacher was hard to find suitable media in preparing the lesson, hard to organize and detect students’ seriousness, and hard to measure students’ listening comprehension. Those problems were also caused by some factors that the researcher qualified into three: students’ network connection or signal, students’ device did not support with the suitable media, and students’ internal factors. The teacher resolves the problems with choosing a suitable application based on the students’ device capability and puts more attention on their students’ learning motivation.
