Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss the importance of selecting the appropriate texts and tasks for reading comprehension. The different text offers opportunities for different kinds of exploitation and tasks related to the text. The more exploitable the text is, the more tasks can be varied. The activities include ones for pre-reading, whilst reading and post-reading forms of activities. Most of the tasks use multiple choice forms of questioning since the language and the content of the text is fairly challenging for SLTP students. The tasks themselves take the form of comprehension practices and a communicative task at the end.

Abstract

This research concerned in the applying concept of teaching reading and development of reading sub-skills. There are many sub-skills in reading comprehenshion, in this case the researcher only focused on seven kinds of sub-skills in reading. The most important thing to bear in mind while designing materials on reading class is that teachers must be sure that the task given to their students to develop the reading sub skill as written in their lesson plan (the objectives). The three phase technique may be followed. The more important thing, however, is the development of the reading sub skills themselves.

Abstract

People in this world have everyday languages which consist of related specific and general concepts. Concepts are defined for typical cases (prototypes). This study focused on categorizing the typical instances which appeared in the main characters’ utterances into several prototypes in the movie of “The Cabin in the Woods”. This research was descriptive qualitative. The study was conducted by taking pieces of conversation between the main characters. Then, the researcher listed the typical instances of the initial concept including art, furniture, education term, economic term, technology term, animal, clothe, beverage, kitchen set, equipment, building, part of house, part of body, color, stationery, profession, vehicle, drug, jewelry, and natural place. Based on the categorization result, it can be concluded that the most prototypes which were frequently appeared in this movie were the prototypes of part of house (13,3%). It can be occurred, because the setting of this movie was at a rambler in a wood. Therefore, the environment influences the human production of the language, and it is proved that there is a relationship between language, mind, and reality. Key word: Prototypes

Abstract

This paper describes the steps in comprehending a text. The steps lead to developing the exercises that helped the students to understand a text easier. The instruction was designed based on the eight important micro skills. These micro skills in comprehending the reading text were hoped that such kind of exercises can give aid for the students to develop their understanding in the text.

Abstract

This research intends to find figurative language in the novel My Sunshine, especially hyperbole, one of the factors the book being the best seller romance novel internationally.The researcher used qualitative method. The researcher analyzed original novel and compare to figurative language. Figurative languages, used as a tool for the author to bring the more realistic situation, bring the reader to understand and sympathies to the characters in the novel they read, then the researcher find out and analysis meaning hyperbole in My Sunshine Novel by Catherine Anderson.Catherine Anderson writer bring the realistic and relatable character in this novel, through the style writing is conveyed well, the reader must know the character and they are all so well develop and portrayed. And the reader really get dig deep into the main character’s emotions, hyperbole emphasizing the emotions felt whilst reading this novel, which is similarly beautiful and exaggeration. This function of hyperbole is researcher found influence with the quality the novel, so it can achieve the number of awards.Realizing the fact above, the researcher decided to do as good as possible in the study of “Hyperbole”. By having careful analysis of the figurative language of the hyperbole as they are so well emphasized by its author Catherine Anderson. Key Words: Analysis, Hyperbole, Personification, Novel.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss how to select appropriate texts which fulfill the aspects to represent students’ competence. To help the students comprehend the texts, the following texts and exercises are expected to be applicable for teaching reading at Junior High School. Building Knowledge of Field (BKOF), Modeling of Text (MOT), Joint Construction of Text (JCOT), and Independent Construction of Text (ICOT) are four stages suggested in teaching English.
