Abstract

Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) or Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) was a self-proclaimed autonomous zone established in June 2020 in Seattle, Washington. After a week of fraught interactions between demonstrators and police in riot gear, protesters established the area after the Seattle Police Department abandoned the East Precinct. The area, which encompassed two intersections at the extremities of Cal Anderson Park and the roadways leading to them, was self-organized and lacked formal leadership. This research paper examines the formation of CHAZ, its processes, and its effects on Seattle's later growth. This research paper contends, utilizing Mancur Olson's Collective Action Theory and a qualitative approach, that CHAZ was established as a result of the local government's minimal effort to engage with the local community. Furthermore, Michael Lipsky's conception of protest as a political resource bolsters CHAZ's demonstration of how protest can influence decision-makers through indirect channels, such as occupation. CHAZ ultimately succeeded in persuading the public and influencing municipal policies to be more equitable.

Abstract

Milk Tea Alliance has gained its popularity as broad youth protests trans- cending national borders against authoritarianism. The protests started to spread its influence in Far-Eastern countries like Hongkong and Taiwan in 2020. In a matter of months, Milk Tea Alliance quickly broadened its influence reaching Southeast Asian countries, namely Thailand and Myanmar. This research aimed to explain the processes of Milk Tea Alliance advocacy as a social movement in ASEAN settings, especially in Thailand and Myanmar. Methodologically, most secondary data are collected with library research techniques and analyzed explanatively with an integrated framework of analysis consisting of a transnational advocacy network model and digital advocacy concept. This research found that Milk Tea Alliance operates transnationally—by disseminating information, framing public opinion, and gaining mass support—and digitally with the help of social media. The results of the research have implications for the overview of digital advocacy practice in ASEAN.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the challenges faced by Indonesian migrant workers and their families in Sabah, Malaysia, particularly with regard to education. Due lack of access to educational resources, many Indonesian children are unable to access quality education in Sabah. The paper proposes a collaborative policy between the Indonesian and Malaysian governments to address this issue in the form of providing educational facilities in the form of Indonesian Sabah schools which operate not only in the city center but in several places that were initially difficult for the children of migrant workers to reach. The proposed policy aims to improve the education outcomes of Indonesian migrant worker families in Sabah. The paper argues that a collaborative approach between the two governments is necessary to address this issue, as it requires coordinated efforts to overcome the various challenges faced by Indonesian migrant worker families. Overall, the paper highlights the importance of addressing the issue of education for Indonesian migrant worker families in Sabah and proposes a collaborative policy as a way forward. By improving the education outcomes of these families, the policy aims to promote their social and economic integration and enhance their overall well-being.

Abstract

Food security has become a prominent issue within sustainable development goals. The high number stunting and malnutrition in Indonesia proves that the zero hunger of SDGs has not been optimally achieved. The government and community face various challenges to end hunger, such as economic limitation and access to the nutritious and sufficient food. This paper will examine how to tackle food security in Indonesia by implementing “Fight Hunger to Achieve Our Better Future” Project. This project was initiated by student of International Relations Department of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur as a project-based study of Sustainable Development. Using the concept of sustainable development and food insecurity as well as penta helix model, there are three series of activities carried out to contribute in ending hunger in Indonesia, namely catfish farming, food security seminar and webinar series, and petition signing. The project successfully involving 350-400 people consist of local communities, village government, high school and university students, medium-small enterprises (UMKM) and media to support zero hunger campaign. This paper argue that the involvement of the penta helix actors would perform better to achieve food security in Indonesia, which included in the SDGs number two.

Abstract

The Iranian Islamic Revolution is one of the most critical events in the study of international relations. This revolution overthrew the ruling regime and gave rise to the Islamic Republic of Iran as a country that applies Islamic teachings as the basis of the state. The Iranian Islamic Revolution also signaled the relevance of the role of Islamic movements in socio-political movements. In addition, the Islamic Revolution of Iran also signifies the trend of desecularization that has characterized international relations for decades. The Islamic Republic of Iran has survived more than four decades despite external pressures. Ayatollah Khomeini was a critical actor in the Islamic Revolution of Iran. Ayatollah Khomeini's thoughts inspired the Iranian people to resist the regime's oppression. Ayatollah Khomeini's thoughts also inspired the Iranian people to accept the form of Iran as an Islamic state. This paper explores the relationship between Ayatollah Khomeini's strategic thinking and the Iranian Islamic Revolution. The method used in this research is qualitative by analyzing Ayatollah Khomeini's statements on religion and revolution.

Abstract

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana is a symbol of Balinese culture and art. One of Garuda Wisnu Kencana statues located in the southern part of Bali is the tallest statue in Indonesia, which has become an iconic landmark. Even in Bali, Pakudui village in Gianyar is famous for the art of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana wooden statue. For the Balinese people, Garuda Wisnu is not just a work of art. The philosophical Garuda Wisnu Kencana is inextricably linked to the Balinese way of life. Apart from its close relationship with the local community, at a higher level, namely at the state level, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is used as a diplomatic tool in various events. This article looks at Garuda Wisnu Kencana from a philosophical standpoint, as well as its use in Indonesian diplomacy. This paper uses a qualitative research method. The data used in this paper comes from an interview with Made Ada, a Balinese master wood carver, as well as secondary sources such as government official websites and national media coverage. By using the concept of cultural identity and cultural diplomacy, the author finds that Garuda Wisnu Kencana's philosophy is in line with Indonesian diplomacy and the artwork used as diplomatic tools in several events.

Abstract

Tourism is one of the main keys to Indonesia's economic development, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) was trying to develop sustainable tourism. One of these efforts is to develop the concept of a tourist village with the principle of community-based tourism. Community-based tourism can create a form of tourism that can provide opportunities for people to build their economy through tourism, in the long term. Several tourism villages have been developed and certified by the Kemenparekraf. These tourism villages that have been considered successful are then marketed to foreign countries, through international events such as exhibitions and tourism village competitions held by the UNWTO, ASEAN, and other international institutions.

Abstract

Food waste is often considered garbage without further processing. This way of thinking eventually leads to waste in the form of food waste that accumulates. The existence of this issue requires contributions from various parties, including state or non-state actors, including the role of youth as future state leaders. Through gastro-diplomacy, the participation of state and non-state actors in overcoming this issue will result in significant solutions. One solution that could be done by the contribution of the state and youth is to reuse leftover food into food or snacks that have a high-selling value. If this initiative can be carried out massively in ASEAN countries and Korea, the accumulation of waste or the percentage of food waste will drastically decrease. In addition, food from leftovers can be traded and will improve people's living standards. Food from leftovers can be used as a diplomatic tool between ASEAN countries and Korea in overcoming the issue of food waste. In this paper, it will be ex- plained further regarding how the role or contribution of the state and youth community can go hand in hand and can achieve the same goal, namely reducing food waste and turning it into ready to sell snacks.
