Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third in the world with an increasing mortality rate, prompting an analysis of various studies that have been conducted over the last 10 years. The inclusion criteria of the analyzed research articles were studies involving the molecular aspects of colorectal cancer associated with its prognosis in the last 10 years. The international literature search method was carried out through article data published in Embase, Scopus, and PubMed using keywords: colorectal cancer, molecular aspects, and prognosis. Through the 440 articles found during the first search out, after going through the final selection stage, 29 articles were determined that met the inclusion criteria. The research method that is widely used in the research analyzed is immunohistochemistry accompanied by PCR. Various molecular aspects have been found to play a role in determining carcinogenesis, response to therapy, and the prognosis of CRC. They generally examine aspects of genes and progress towards microRNA and some molecular aspects are still useful in determining the prognosis so they are still being worked on at this time but further research is needed to further complement the existing data about CRC.

Abstract

The use of interactive nervous system modules is expected to be suitable to increase knowledge and facilitate independent learning. The interactive module used must be tested for usability. Usability and user experience are the main determinants of the quality of a product in the form of media or systems, as well as an indicator of success or failure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of an interactive nervous system module that was developed based on user acceptance and increased usage knowledge. A pre-experimental one group pre–test–post–test design with a sequential explanatory mixed method was taken. The sample of this study was all participants taking the comprehensive stage in March 2022. The quantitative measurement used the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), while the knowledge measurement used two packages of pretest and posttest questions. Further, the Qualitative measurements were carried out by interviewing to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the interactive modules that have been developed as well. There is evidence that the module increases the participant's knowledge (p-value was 0.000 using paired sample t-test). The average results of the pre-test and post-test scores were 68.33 and 83.06 respectively. The results of the measurement of user acceptance using SUS obtained a value of 73.125 which indicates that the interactive nervous system module is "Acceptable" based on acceptability ranges, "good" based on the adjective rating, and grade C based on the Grade Scale. UEQ measurement results obtained Overall “Excellent”, Pragmatic Quality “Excellent”, Hedonic Quality“Excellent”. The participants of the Comprehensive Stage said that the interactive nervous system module had advantages in terms of the system, easy access, attractive appearance and easy to understand. The drawback is that the use on mobile devices is still less comfortable when compared to use on laptops and tablets. Our study concludes that the use of these interactive nervous system modules is well acceptable as it can facilitate students' independent learning and increase knowledge. Moreover, Interactive modules also have advantages in terms of systems, ease of access, attractiveness and clarity of material, however the improvement in appearance to keep comfortable when user use on mobile devices is still needed.

Abstract

Opportunistic intestinal protozoa are intestinal protozoa that can infect humans and cause clinical symptoms depending on the patient’s immune status. In immunocompromised patients, infection by opportunistic intestinal protozoa can cause symptoms of diarrhea; mild to severe diarrhea. In addition to immunocompromised patients, these opportunistic intestinal protozoa can also be found in children with poor personal hygiene and environmental sanitation. This research was a descriptive study that aims to determine the incidence of opportunistic intestinal protozoa infection in orphanage children in Pekanbaru, which was conducted from August until October 2022. The result of microscopic examination with acid-fast staining were 70 samples of children’s feces from 8 of the orphanage found 41,4% were positive for opportunistic intestinal protozoans; consisting of 11.4% Cryptosporidium sp. infection, Blastocystis hominis as much as 21.4%, Cyclospora sp as much as 1.4%. and mixed infections of Blastocystis hominis and Cryptosporidium sp. as much as 7.2%. The prevalence of opportunistic intestinal protozoa found in the feces of orphanage children in Pekanbaru is high, but to our knowledge, these intestinal protozoans will not cause definite symptoms as long as the individual’s immune status is good.

Abstract

Rapid advancement in genetics and genomics translates to its increasing relevancy in many sectors, including healthcare. In order to fully utilized genetic and genomic technologies in medicine, physicians, starting from medical students, need to have a good understanding on the subject. This study aimed to conduct genetic literacy questionnaire pre-testing on medical students of Universitas Riau. The International Genetic Literacy and Attitudes Survey (iGLAS) questionnaire was translated into Indonesian language. The initial translation was discussed in an expert review for construct validity as well as a student’s cognitive interview to review the language. Finally, internal consistency was tested on 34 students. The translated questionnaire had good construct validity. Review and interview suggested some wording changes to increase language understandability. The respondents had relatively low genetic literacy with mean score of 50.44 ± 11.57. The students had good knowledge regarding DNA nucleotides (70.6% correct answers) and function of a gene (97.1% correct answers). However, students overestimated the number of genes in human DNA (17.6% correct answers). We also found misconceptions regarding the term “genome” as all genes composition instead of all DNA sequences (32.4% correct answers). While the students know there are 23 chromosomes in human (73.5% correct answers), they misunderstood that each gene had 23 copies instead of 2 (23.5% correct answers). Other misconceptions were about genetic similarity between different cell types of an individual (20.6% correct answers), between family member (38.2% correct answers), and between random people (only one answered correctly, 2.9%). This result could lay the basis for intervention to increase genetic literacy among medical students.

Abstract

Postoperative infection in urinary tract calculi (UTC) cases still become an issue. It is accounted for up to one-tenth of patients experiencing urinary tract infections. Standardized preoperative urine culture help identify bacteria and antibiotic needed for UTC patients. Nevertheless, postoperative infection occurs even though no bacteria were found in urine preoperatively. This descriptive study aims to identify bacteria in calculi. Calculi culture and antibiotic sensitivity tests were carried out in patients with negative urine cultures who underwent endourology procedures from February to June 2022. Thirty-five negative urine culture cases consisting of 23 (46%) males and 12 (24%) females were identified. Positive calculi culture was identified in 11 (31.4%) cases with a previously negative urine culture. Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were two prominent bacteria found. Among those patients, 5 (45.5%) cases develop SIRS and required antibiotic changes. Our data suggested added benefit of calculi culture in patients with stone disease, especially one enduring endourology procedure. An extensive study with larger sample size is required to decide whether routine calculi culture examination is necessary.

Abstract

Pregnant women have higher risks for severe COVID-19. Therefore, this group requires protection, including in the form of vaccination. Generally, pregnant women are not included in the vaccine’s clinical trials, therefore safety data of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women are limited. As part of the safety and immunogenicity study of CoronaVac vaccine among pregnant women, we tested anti-S titer prior to vaccination. We recruited 45 women participating in the COVID-19 vaccination program. Only 3 of them (6.7%) reported having previous COVID-19 history. However, when tested for anti-S antibodies, more than half of the participants (26 persons, 57.8%) were reactive. Only one out of three participants reported previous COVID-19 infection was reactive for anti-S antibodies. Meanwhile, 25 (59.5%) of those who reported no previous infection were reactive. We found no factors influenced seropositivity, including gravida, gestational age, and healthcare profession. This high seropositivity among unvaccinated pregnant women who reported no previous infection reflected potential underreporting and underdetection of COVID-19 in the population.
